    Hey guys I have a question. Running 6112 at 1.9 setting 5160 in rear. running on 285/70/18 wheels with +25 offset. Will I have to re-gear my tundra ? Thank u.

    Sounds like someone was trying to up-sell you. I'm running 35's and am not worried about it in the slightest. The only thing you might consider in that department is a speedometer calibration.

    Ya I won’t worry about it then. I wanna get 285/70/18 which is basically 34inch tire. But I don’t wanna have to use bumper shims and or do a BMC. I’m kinda leaning towards 275/75/18 but then again I think they would look small. I just don’t know what size tire I really want.

    It's just cutting a corner. It's not like they're cutting in the middle or changing the structural integrity in some drastic manner. I have some before and after pics in my Build thread (link below) and/or in my albums.

    Of course you don't have to, but drive a truck with 4.88's and 34's -- and then make your decision. It completely changes the driving experience.

    I equate this to HP gains using the good ol' butt-o-meter. I have 35's and didn't notice any difference when I made the switch. If you're in OKC, come drive mine.

    It's not a butt dyno. It's physics. The gears help put the engine in a proper power band and thus stop the transmission from hunting for gears. This all results in a truck that feels lighter on its feet, tows better, and operates more smoothly.

    When I switched to 34" LT tires (before regearing), the truck became noticeably sluggish

    So will I be ok with the stock gears in the 5.7v8 if I run 285 or 275 ? I just really don’t want to ruin my tundra. This was my dream truck. I’ve had nothing but lifted Tacoma’s and now I have a tundra I love my tundra lol

    We're just talking in circles so I'll just end it with this - I'm not worried about about re-gearing until I add quite a bit more weight to the truck (full armor, new sliders, toolbox, etc) on my 35's or if I go up to 37's. Some people have chosen to re-gear because they have specific needs. I noticed no difference after the upgrade and my truck doesn't hunt for gears on hills. I also don't tow. The drivetrain wear is negligible. Having a shop install new gears is expensive. I want to say I was quoted $1000 just for install, but I don't really remember. It was a while back.

    Those are fair points. For me, towing was a big concern so regearing was a priority -- similar to your point about adding more weight. And you're right, it's a significant investment.

    OP - if you choose to regear, do your homework to find a good shop. Make sure they've done this before. It's not like installing a lift.

    A regear is not necessary, especially with a 5.7. I know people who run 35’s and even 37’s on stock gearing. That being said regearing is a solid investment and your truck will drive more like it did when stock.
    I noticed a significant difference in how my truck drove when I switched to 35’s with 4:30’s. It was noticeably more sluggish and constantly shifting on the freeway. Now with 4:88’s it performs much better and doesn’t constantly shift gears at the slightest throttle input.
    Cost is always a consideration though as a regear is not cheap. It was about $2500 for gears and install for me. That’s without the cost of my LSD which was another $450 but didn’t change the install price.

    Our trucks have adaptive memory ecu’s.

    When you change their mathematical calculation of load, you make the ecu think there is more load than there actually is.

    With big tires, you cause the wheel speed to be lower, the throttle position to be higher and the ecu freaks out.

    If you put a stock truck on the dyno you see about 335hp to the ground. Same truck with 35’s (after ecu adapts) is about 280 to the ground. It’s not the tire causing that much loss. It’s the ecu tuning itself to keep the engine calibration safe.

    When you regear, go more aggressive than stock. This increases wheel speed, and decreases throttle position. Then the ecu tunes itself for more fun.

    I just got my 5.29s done and I’m sitting on 35s now and it feels amazing. Does not feel like it’s over geared at all. Even while breaking in, so I can’t really abuse the truck. I had 32s, 33s and 35s now on my truck. As soon as I went to 33s 12.5 tires it slowed the truck down a lot. Got worse on 35s. I live in the Bay Area so we have lots of hills that will show you how bad it is. If it were all flat like Florida and the Earth(joke) then I doubt it would be an issue. I have 37s I need to put on so we’ll see how that feels. Doing the pinch weld mod now to fit them. Also need to adjust my COs cause I never did it after they settled. I’ll be posting up the stock 4.30s as soon as I take a picture of them. They look still new even though the truck has 72,000 miles on it.

    If you’re asking me here is the pinch weld mod I just finished and how she sits as if today. I used a mini sledge hammer and a rotozip with a metal cutoff wheel. Now I just need to raise the coilovers, use a metal adhesive on the flattened pinch and paint the entire area with POR15.     Thank you. Once you start modding the truck it’s over. It’s an addiction. A healthy addiction, but still an addiction. This site does not help either. So many sick trucks on here to get info and ideas from. It’s hard to keep up. Haven’t seen your truck but it’s a tundra so I know it looks good. The MGM is a sweet color.

    I’m new to this forum. Still learning and how to upload pictures. So I’m most likely gonna run 275/70/18 cause I don’t wanna use bumper shims or do a BMC maybe later down the road. I’m keeping this truck for a long time. So will I honestly be ok running 275/70/18 on my stock gears ? I’m gonna lift it 6112 front at 1.9 setting and 5160 in rear with +1-+2 shackles in back. I should be ok right ? I don’t tow anything other than a utility trailer. And sometimes a north river sea hawk boat

    With what your trying to run. Which is basically a 33 inch tire and not a 12.5 wide tire I wanna say ur ok on stock gears but you will notice a drop in power going up hill. You could go 4.88s if you plan on staying in that size. But after 35s I would go 5.29. I followed dirtydeeds advice and went more aggressive than I need cause once you get a taste for bigger tires it makes you want more and more. Plus your shifting changes with bigger tires and stock gears. I don’t tow anything so I can’t help you there. There’s lots of guys who tow on the site that can be more of help to you. Oh and welcome to the forum.

    Why are you scared of bumper shims? It doesn’t hurt the truck and is a safe mod. Keeps you from having to remove the front flap and cutting piece behind the fog lights.
