I have a 2003 tundra trd with a bad engine. I found a sequoia engine that states it is compatible. I messaged them. Said from 2000-2004 would interchange. Stated I would have to swap some parts such as exhaust manifolds and oil pan. Is there anything else? Don’t want any surprises. Thank you so much.

You didn’t say what year sequoia engine you’re looking at.
2000-2004 engines all interchange. I thought all the oil pans and exhaust manifolds for both the 1st gen tundras and sequoias are the exact same? The throttle bodies might be different between the years. The early tundras had an actual speedo cable that opened the TB. The later models were drive by wire.
Perhaps the reason why the seller says that the sequoia engine needs the exhaust manifolds swapped is because they’re cracked? And maybe its oil pan is dented?

It is highly possible you are correct. I don’t know Toyota engines that well. The donor engine is from a 2000-2004 Sequoia. I still have engine in mine. So I should have parts to swap if need be. Just trying to get a heads up before I tackle this.

What's "bad" on your original engine?

Engine locked up. Got it that way. It was my dad’s. Poorly maintained engine wise.

My only pro tip is to use LOTS of penetrating oil on the manifold and exhaust pipe collector threads. After lubing them up, i'd then smear a coat of anti-seize all over the rest of the threads. The OEM exhaust locking nuts can easily gall to the studs! The nuts are either going to come off really easy, or they ain't coming off at all. I also wouldn't use any impact tool either. The speed at which the nuts spin will cause excessive heat and will probably also cause the nuts to gall to the studs. Take PLENTY of time to remove them by hand!

Locked up, but why? Timing belt snapped?

I've managed to free absurdly frozen engines frozen for a decade or more - by simply putting a blast of Marvel Mystery Oil into each cylinder, waiting 2-3 days, then turning it over.

Broke a rod. Wouldn’t budge with 3 ft breaker bar.

did you verify the broken rod?

don’t see that problem very often with these engines (one other time I can remember)

I didn’t. You could hear it knocking 6 months before it locked up is what he told me. With way it had 232,000 on the odometer. Found a 72k engine to put in it.

This screams T Belt. Maybe not, maybe I should have read the thread.

232k miles is barely breaking in on these engines. 125-175k is ideal. Be careful with that low mile engine. Inspect thoroughly for sludge. (It probably sounds like I'm kidding, but this is not a joke)

Before you install the new engine would ideal time to replace any rubber items like hoses, seals, belts etc.

Can someone tell me what this oil applies to? I bought a 2003 tundra 4.7 but pans are different.

Does anyone know if the sumps are the same for Lx470 and the Tundra 2003?
