thinking about adding an amp and new speakers to my ac
I have never been inside the doors. How are the tweeters wired into the system? Does each tweeter have a dedicated set of wires from the stereo or is there just one set of front speaker wires from stereo to door speaker, with the tweeter hooked up through a passive bypass?

Thanks. Does that connect to speaker wires going back to the stereo or does it plug into a harness on the bottom speaker? I haven’t put an amp in a vehicle in 30 years, but I am enjoying doing this stuff myself. When I look at decent amps most are 4 channel. Trying to figure out how to incorporate 4 door speakers, two tweeters, and a sub into an amp.

The pictured connector connects into the tweeter pig tail connected to the tweeter still attached to the removed (not pictured) door panel.

Do you already have and aftermarket headunit? I installed some Kenwood Component speakers in the front doors of 06 Tundra. The tweeter fit perfect in the stock location with no modifications. The tweeter wiring goes to the component woofer speaker in the door.

Unless you are really good and going to an active system, that's not really the way to look at it. 4 channel means front left and right, and rear left and right. Component speakers come with a crossover so you run wires from your amp to the crossover and then wires from the crossover to the tweeter and woofer. Basically the crossover splits the frequencies between the tweeter and woofer. So you most likely won't re-use the factory wires for the new speakers.

Ah that answers my question rock climber. From what readjust says above, the tweeter wire goes to the bottom speaker. That means there is some type crossover going on already?

There has to be some type of crossover or the tweeter would blow trying to play low notes. I don't know where the stock one is in the wiring so that's what I'd just run new wire. I haven't replaced the speakers yet on my tundra, but on my last truck, I installed the crossovers inside the cab so I didn't have to worry about them rattling in the door, or not being able to easily access if I wanted to adjust the tweeter settings on the crossover. Then I ran the wires from the crossover into the door and up to the tweeter or down to the woofer. It's actually really easy to run new wires and you'll need to run new speaker wires from the amp anyway.

I installed in the front doors Kenwood KFC-P710PS 6-1/2" Component Speakers purchased from Amazon. The Kenwood component speakers have a built in crossover on the woofer. I plugged the woofer into the Tundra factory speaker wiring using an adapter. The tweeter plugs into the woofer using the speaker wire that came with the Kenwood component speakers.

I do have an amp but it is an Alpine 4 channel 45 watt per channel amp that plugs into the wiring harness between the Alpine head unit and the Metra wiring harness adapter. I used the Toyota factory wiring to all speaker locations.

I think the connection off the woofer has a capacitor on it to limit frequency, hard to remember after ripping mine out 10 years ago.

Excellent post @rock climber that's dead on.

For what its worth, I turned on the OEM stereo without the tweeters plugged in and it sounded the same as with the tweeters. All OEM speakers.

I had the tweeters loose so plugged one back in and held it to my ear and barely any sound was present. It was as if the speaker sounded like the regular larger speakers but at an extremely low sound. Large speakers loud and these tweeters very muted.

Not a stereo guy here so not sure what to expect. Maybe they’re broken?

I installed focal components with an amp wired into the factory speaker wires and used the supplied plug and play adapters on both the tweeters and 6x9 door mids. The tweeters did come with passive crossovers wired in line but didn’t appear to be enough so I had to add in line bass blockers that filter through at 5000 kHz and it sounds really good. However if you wanted to bypass the factory wiring for the tweeters then you could easily run your own wire from the doors to the dash and then just use whatever crossover/filter method that’s appropriate.
