I have a 2017 SR5 with a stock head unit and no CarPlay. Could I swap a OEM head unit from a 2021 1794 that has CarPlay into my truck? If so, what would I need to make this work?

I’m trying to maintain a stock unit and would prefer to do this over buying an aftermarket one.

    Thanks!

I just did this a few months ago on my 2017 with JBL. Went to a 2021 JBL Head unit and OEM JBL Amp.

I used this thread for part numbers to shop Ebay for a used head unit and amp.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/20-21-oem-radio-part-number.113148/

    Ordered a harness from Autoharnesshouse.com

Everything works perfectly for me. Audio quality seems to be the same, Bluetooth phone call quality definitely improved.

Looks like you do not have a JBL system. I believe this means you only need to replace and head unit and not the amp.

There are a few different threads on making this swap. a google search should help you find these threads.

    Cheers!

Just curious the hesitation in moving away from OEM - I haven’t missed anything about mine for a second.

AZBOAT, what unit is this? What did it cost you to install? I’m not sold on keeping the OEM look, but I’m just shopping my options.

bg567, since my 2017 doesn’t have JBL, do you know if I need to get a head unit from a 2020/2021 that doesn’t have JBL or if one with JBL will work as well?

I can do that with the tablet attached to Rago dash mount. And generally have everything that the stock head unit does not have. Which I still upgraded, to one with GPS navigation. Same sh*t, but with navigation :)

Sure - but then it’s on a tablet attached to the dash and not pumping through your stereo or having cords running everywhere. My OEM HU sounded awful.

Show me a mounted tablet that looks like that and not obscuring a huge chunk of windshield? I get that you’re committed to this - but I assure you a in-dash floating screen is not the same as slapping a tablet on some shitty mount.

Alright, maybe putting in an OEM head unit from a 2020/2021 with CarPlay doesn’t make sense. Do y'all have suggestions for a head unit? Trying to keep it under $600 if possible. Just looking for CarPlay (wireless is preferred) and a bonus if I can stream games and shows from it like pictured above

You will need a non JBL Head-unit I believe.

I have a Kenwood with car play and love it. Radio is one cost, but the adaptor to keep all steering wheel buttons is an addition to keep in mind. Might add about $200 more, but I can't remember off hand.
