Howdy, had a 2017 I traded for a Ford, BIG MISTAKE.... I have owned nothing but toyotas until I bought thr Ford, I will stick with Toyota moving forward.

Question, I did a little digging, but hard to come to an overall consesus, is it a bad idea to buy a 2022 model? I know they have had their issues, but it is a Toyota. I found a 2022 4x4 with 25K for a really good price.

    Thanks in advance.

I personally went with new because used was about the same price.
I looked at a 2022 platinum with 14,000 miles dealer wanted 60k, picked up a 2023 platinum same packaging for alittle more.
You do what you want is the bottom line!

Also not sure on the financing in your area but usually new vehicles get lower rates which in the end result in paying less over the course of the loan. I know used vehicle loans where I live are 9% best case right now

How much if you don’t mind me asking? If it’s close to new price, I would just get a new one - however, it depends of course and if it’s a solid deal (well below new) and if it has the Toyota 100,000 mile certified used warranty, it’s probably a good move. At this point it likely has had all the important recalls handled and the only question mark is if it has one of the bad engine bearing, so make sure to get the warranty. The only potential downsides would be the complaints you’re not going to get Toyota to fix, such as wind noise and possibly weak A/C. (I agree the A/C blows lightly but it works fine and is more a trivial 1st world issue than anything else). Make sure you can live with those first. They are really sweet trucks.

I can't find a new one for less than $57-58K. Current new rates are 5.99% and used 6.96%

Well, might as well share now as I have put $ down to hold it... I did go with a 4 year 50,000 mile bumber to bumper warranty. I'll lose 8 months since it's still under Toyotas 3 year 36,000 factory warranty.

Talked to the finance manager who personally knew the seller. Gentleman worked for NASA, got remarried to a woman with teenage boys and needed SUV. Said the fella didn't want to trade it, but it was out of necessity.

i know salesmen/dealers can blow smoke, but he sounded pretty genuine.

    You have to ask yourself:

    1. Will I mind if it'll have turbo waste gate issue? It'll get fixed under warranty
    2. Will I mind if it'll have engine bearing issue? It'll probably get fixed under warranty and you'll be without truck for a month or two.
    3. Early models sub par interior quality. Maybe dealer will fix most.
    4. Wind noise and seals issue - good luck getting dealer to fix it. Noisy cabin for long drives. This one you can probably notice though if you test drive long enough and pay close attention. Read through the big wind noise thread here.
    5. Consider buying extended warranty, there's a thread here with discounting pricing
    6. Gas tank only has one sensor and shows wrong amount left. 2023 now has two sensors. Can't fix this issue for 2022. Not a huge deal though

I personally wouldn't buy it. 2023 and newer has some issues fixed which earlier gens will never get fixed under warranty... Noise issues, rattling doors, etc

If he loved it so much and didn't want to trade it in why did he buy a Ford? Why not a Toyota Sequoia or a 4 Runner?
    I'm not buying that story.
I'd buy a 2023 , the 2024's are coming out soon. So you should be able to find a good deal on a new 2023.
    Good luck with your decision.

Looks like one of those Gulf State TSS packages - not available in my area and I think is a great looking truck (similar to TRD Sport, which is one of the best looking packages IMO ) have you driven it yet?

With the issues with the early 2022 models, I would spend the 10K more and get a 2023 or even a 2024. With the economy the way it is (scary) you may be able to get a 2024 for a few $$$ more.

He didn't buy a Ford, he bought a slightly pre-owned Lexus SUV someone else had traded in for a Ford. Not sure what model the Lexus was.

That's an SR5 with limited wheels you should be able to find and new SR5 for around the same price or better or a nicer truck for 50k seems like an odd ball build (not in a good way) I got my limited 6.5 bed for 54k

Considering they are hard to come by in my area, and it's a vehicle that I have invested time and research into, I don't think it's a bad decision to keep it close to the chest, especially since it just hit the lot a week ago.

If you take issue with it, then don't share any insightful information, which you've already accomplished.

    To everyone else, THANK YOU

No it's a TSS package, it's a real package. 20'' wheels, step rails, few other things. I'm well aware it is SR5, and I'm okay with that. I'd love a brand new one, but obviously if I'm searching for used, I'm looking to stay within a specific price range. Hope you are loving yours!

    That’s a terrible deal.

That’s a SR5 with a TSS sticker, has no TSS options on it. TSS is all emblems blacked out, predator steps, and 20” black TRD wheels. They chopped up that truck with a bunch of random OEM parts.

You can get a brand new TSS for $50k (if you know how to negotiate and time of the month), go check out Fred Haas Toyota Country highway 45 north.

I agree. I just got a message from one of the local dealers in DFW. $5k off any new Tundra on the lot. Good deals to be had for new 0 mile trucks.

Eh, I've done enough research to know that this is not a terrible deal. They are giving me around $1000 above KBB for the Ford and I'm paying essentially KBB value for the SR5. I'm okay with that. I don't really care if it's missing black emblems and a particular set of step bars. It's merely a "looks" package and quite honestly I like some chrome, call me a traditionalist.

Hahaha uh huh. "Repo" and "reliable" are not necessarily related concepts.

Why are you guys shitting on his choice of truck? Let the man get his truck and be happy FFS.

I've been seeing far more crank bearing failures in the new trucks with far less mileage. The plastic trim in the interior is breaking around the seats. Plastic trim is falling off the exterior. The tailgate traps all kinds of crap between the tailgate and the cladding. Etc. New isn't always good!
Edit: forgot rear main seal failures too!
