Put down a deposit on an allocated TRD Pro several weeks ago and was given a Vin number. I was able to find and track updates with some option changes I made from the Toyota inventory website. Now it appears that the Vin number may have changed. Just curious if vin numbers change during production. I am in the process of checking with the dealership however I thought I would ask here as well.
    Thanks

OME Nitrocharger/2612 (front), Bilstein 5100s (rear). Vanguard roll bar modified (by me) to fit over Patriot Stealth retractable tonneau. Aftermarket halo headlights with HID, various LED bulb replacements. 17" Fuel Blitz wheels with some 33" Nitto terra grapplers. Hoodscoop, nfab nerfbars, Bushwacker flares. No-name aftermarket grille, led fender extensions. Black Horse bambi-basher. Various offroad lights.
Its possible, I seem to recall that certain numbers within the VIN indicate specific options and information. If you made option changes from Toyota, the VIN may have changed to reflect that.

Yes - they change once vehicle is “in production”

The number you have - which will have a letter in the last 6, is a pre production tracking.

The assigned VIN will be completely different.

For example the last 6 you were given might look like 1234B6

    You may get 457899

First 11 are ten identifiers of year/make/model/engine/safety equipment and a check digit

Yes - 9th is the “check” digit - so it will almost always change.

I’m not 100% of the last 6 are sequential on Tundras or there’s some code to it. (IE first off line on a model year is 000001…2nd 000002….).

I’ll take a look at mine today and see - I should be around 85-110k made with a mid May production date based on normal years production guesses - but slowdowns might have pushed production down a little too.

The build I have is in the Southeast region and I was able to find it from southeast buy Toyota from looking through the inventory list. The vin numbers with the vehicle are listed.

Just went through the same thing. On July 8th my dealer told me the VIN changed indicating the truck was built, and it arrived at the dealer (Augusta, Ga) on July 16th.
    Good news!!!

I hope you are "lucky" like I was. Mine was scheduled for July 26th, but arrived over a week early on the 16th. I am sure shipping logistics and distance from Texas make a huge difference, but sure hope you get a nice surprise early call like I did!

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

If your vehicle is on order - use the pre-build tracking number they give (17 digit number that looks like a VIN - but will have a letter in last 6 instead of all numerical)

Site will tell you the order date for the vehicle up until the time that it’s physically being built.

Once the vehicle “build” begins - that number will no longer work and you will receive an error.

The “final production” VIN is provided to the dealer in about 3 days when it hits distribution - allows them to track where vehicle is at in the chain.

Once it’s built - 2 weeks to 4 weeks until it’s on your dealers lot. Depends on how backed up rail cargo and trucks are (goes via rail from Toyota manufacture to the regional distributor) and then finally via motor carrier from distributor to your dealer typically.

As to VIN being sequential - just looked at mine yesterday…if they are sequential, Toyota is very backed up and explains the perception of a shortage.

Mine was built 5/29 and is right at 22.000 range - using last years guesstimate production they should have been well passed 60k by then.

I still suspect 2021 production is going to continue right up until December potentially - as long as they have parts and a buyer they will make them. But others are stating the production lines are going to change over Labor Day weekend (typical changeover) and start building 2022s.

Guess we see - I mean they have to start building 2022s sometime to get them into showrooms soon. I mean you gotta build a “first run” of 500-1000 or so to put out there on a test run as a final Beta of sorts. That takes time - not sure if they could potentially simultaneously make 2021s and 2022s side by side - but suspect that’s a potential option.

Question: with all the parts shortages going on would there be any concerns with quality issues with a 2021 build.

    I seriously doubt it.

Kinda a big leap to go from “Toyota doesn’t have enough chips to produce trucks” to wind up at “Toyota no longer takes the same quality controls they normally have in order to boost production”.

They simply build less - not start rushing the builds or using previously rejected parts.

As to “rushing” a build - keep in mind a production line is just that - a line that moves at the same pace constantly- it’s not like hand building something like a home. One guy might cut corners and do it in half the time to do 2x as much on a carpentry job - with a production line though - try that and all you wind up with is a wait till the next one comes - no benefit as you cannot be “more” productive than the line as a whole.

Manufacturers have it down to a micro second and assemblers on the line are conditioned to do the job at the expected quality in the time allotted. Doing the same thing a few hundred times a week - you get the hang of it quickly I guess.

Knew a man who worked at Ford engine plant assembling carbs years ago. 32 years on the line and he was shot - couldn’t sit down for longer than 30 minutes he said (stood 8 hours a day on the line) and had to have something in his hands standing there or felt weird. No way I could do that job for nearly as long.

I was able to confirm the vin change with the dealership, however the option for the predator pro step that was originally listed has been taken off and according to the dealership and their parts department Toyota may not be offering the predator pro step as an option anymore. At this time they cannot confirm if this is an availability issue or not?

had predator side steps on my early July build so if they ran out they just did in the last few weeks. Just took them off today. If there is a a shortage I have a brand new set for cheap!

Mag Grey crewmax with Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Paint protection film on front/hood/door edges, spray in bedliner, LED interior lights, and of course the predator steps. Was already ordered that way and was close enough to what I would ideally order and $500 off MSRP got me to put a deposit down in early July before someone else snagged it.

I've got a letter as my 4th digit, and an order date of 7/2021 - so does this mean its not being built yet?

Dealer has ensured me they can see its in production and estimating it'll be on the lot by end of August, which is approaching quickly. I'm currently down a vehicle so definitely looking to get it ASAP!

Curious if anyone knows why they would push my build back so far. I ordered my truck June 20th, the build date was supposed to be July 10th, now the dealer is saying mid September.

The "order date" on the Toyota site mentioned earlier in this thread says May 2021. They assure me that it will still be built but I'm getting worried something odd is happening.

The original vin number that I was given was a pre build tracking number and this number changed at the end of July. Before there was a letter within the last 6 digits and now the last 6 digits are all numbers. I was told that the change is now the actual vin number. The build date that I have is scheduled for the end of August and the dealership just confirmed that the arrival date is still on schedule. Hope the dealership is correct.

When did you actually put the deposit down? What color, ect?

Your time frame sounds similar to mine which is why I'm wondering why mind all of a sudden got pushed back so far.

I actually got a call from the dealership the first week of July as someone had this one on order and they cancelled. Since someone had originally ordered it I really don’t have the date of when the vehicle was first ordered. I will check to see if I can find out the original order date.

Does anyone have a breakdown of the vin number? For example what digit denotes bed length? Not trying to get off topic just seems you guys have that info..............

I've been told today that the Magnetic Grey I have a deposit on is built, but its "missing a piece" and they wouldn't tell the dealership what that piece was, but that they are certain they will still get the truck in.
They also gave me an option to switch to a Lunar Rock that is being built 9/12...I'm torn.
