Water pump died.

    Welp, my water pump died, after about a year. Can't say it was sudden, cuz it was warning me. Why didn't I change it sooner? There is a hose on the throttle body that is coming apart, assuming it is feeding coolant to the throttle body so it doesn't freeze. So, its showing the inside webing
    and I thought it was it, but obviously it wasn't.
    What happened Getting off the graveyard shift, a couple blocks before I got home, the truck felt weird, like it lost power or it buckled. I was turning right and due to recent rains there is gravel and dirt everywhere.. Going through it, itelt like I lost traction, but no lights nor whistles. In front of my house I start to back in, and heard a sound like something burst, and felt like I lost power steering as the steering became extremely stiff. My battery light came on and it started to stutter power wise. Looking at all my gauges the only one moving was the battery amp. Looking out the window I saw the trail of fluid. At 5am in the dark everything looks the same color... Once I parked I turned it and attempted to assess the damage and red coolant was all over the place. It never overheated, but it started gargling.

    So... I turned in and took a nap...
    A few hours later, it looked a little something like this

    Wasn't happy about it, but not much I could do about it.
    Gathered my tools and this is what I ended up using.

    10mm socket
    12mm socket, wrench
    14mm socket
    5mm allen wrench
    17inch breaker bar
    pliers
    scuff pad to clean the pump seal.
    flat head screw driver or pry bar
    6mm hex bit, optional
    17in wheel wrapped with 225/45/17 as a step stool.. more confortable than a step latter.

    Didn't need to drain, as it was mostly on the floor and the street, radiator had 2 quarts in there per the pan below. Remove top radiator hose,

    Fan shroud and fan gotta come out..
    Check that hose circled, thought coolant was coming from there which is why I waited so long. I removed the fan using x2 12mm wrenches, 1 geared, 1 non-geared. Held 1 loosened 1 then spin to the next one, last 2 used a long flat head to hold the next nut so I can loosen the last 2 nuts. Once all 4 were loose, they come out easily by hand, no power tool nor ratchet fit in there. Pry bar or flat head fit inbetween to the fan pulley and fan to separate them. By the way bring your patience, because it will take time to seperate it as it comes out a bit at a time.. Maybe pulling this fan up can relieve that pressure and comes out easier, maybe, It is a bit heavy. Fan shroud is held by 2 10mm at the top and 2 prong feet at the bottom, so unbolt and pull up, mind the radiator fittings.

    I cut my belt since it was already damaged and it was going to be replaced anyway. While here I removed the belt tensioner and idle pulley since they were already bad. Middle top a 6mm hex bit with a breaker bar made quick work of the hex and a 12mm socket for the bottom bolt.

    Worried about my alternator at this point since it was covered in coolant. Have my Lexus/Tundra 4.7 130 amp alternator on stand by because my SC400's is dying. I pulled my throttle body with the intension of replacing a damaged hose, turns out its the wrong hose.. parts guy lead me down the path, as the other hose is not ilustrated. It was ordered yesterday and I'll need a new throttle body gasket.

    Thermostat housing is out, now failure appears to be from the bottom bolt hole.. while removing the housing, this bottom bolt backed out about 1/4 to 1/2 way out, its also attached to the water pump circled in red below. Dealership did my water pump about 10 years ago, it was the only time I had engine work.

    These are all 12mm bolts with the exception of 2 that are 14mm bolts and are right next to each other. Also that hard line has a short hose and is a complete bitch to get off I had to pull both clamps to the right, seen hanging and pulled it with the thermostat housing. It will also not let that bottom 14mm come out.

    put everything back in reverse order. Took a good 6 hours of work, I had 2 more hours of breaks and bsing with neighbor. In the dark its hard to work, so I finished the next morning, verifying all bolts were tight clamps in proper place and belt was over all pulleys correctly. Belt was a bitch to remount... There was an external cause to my loss of concentration to which I struggled like 2 hours with this belt as I couldn't get enough room to slide in the 5mm hey key in the service hole. I ended up using the ratchet, and in 5 minutes I hooked the belt on all pulleys and was done for the night.

    In the early morning I dropped in 2 gallons of coolant and started a bleed procedure.
    Turned the truck on with the heater at full blast, with defrost on and revving the enginento 2k occassionally. I bled it similarly to my SC400 running and it appears to be good. I've driven it about 15 miles today, to make sure all is good and got a p0171, p0174 code. It dawned on me the intake wasn't seated correctly, so I pulled the air box lid and reset it on the hose, code is gone have heat, and she purrs like a kitten. Alot quietter than before, for sure.

    One problem I may be looking into is the compressor clutch... with the heater on it would appear to short out in 4 separate intervals. it would show on the amp gauge.. It would move 4 times with it. This is new, but after driving it, it appears to have gone away.


    Hind sight is 20/20, if you pull the radiator with tow package, its probably easier, since no transmission lines are attached.. I didn't do it, probably should've... Maybe next time.. Additionally, I asked around here when the pump first started leaking, on when I should change it but never got a clear answer. I got a spec ed kid and have to time my maintenance, so I would recommend as soon as it starts leaking gather your parts and do it. Or take it to a mechanic. Mine lasted about a year after it started leaking.

    It was on sale at a Lexus service center in NorCal for 9 bucks a gallon if I remember correctly, so I snagged 4 of them. I usually grab the concentrated one and mix it on the side...

    I did a water hardness test for CVS distilled water, and it was not a distilled water. Was using a kitchen sink reverse osmosis water afterwards for years. Happy I can get prediluted coolant from Toyota.

    I've heard of things like this, gimmicks every where, just never know...

    Water hardness tester is under $15 on Amazon. A cheap assurance against calcium buildup in the cooling system.

    Or use a pre-diluted coolant mix.

    For illustration: found it in the engine of 15 y.o. donor car w/ 220k miles. It has a low pressure turbo and runs very hot, much hotter than 3UR-FE does.

    My engine at the same mileage has had some scale, too, but it was less calcium and more other minerals. The scale layer was very hard, unlike flaky calcium buildup pictured above.

    That reminds me to flush coolant in Tundra next spring, mileage will be around 40-45k miles.

    Congrats for doing this! Oh, that short little hose!!! MFer for sure. Took me all day with hand tools by myself. Will definitely pay to have it done next time around!

    I removed the thermostat housing and pulled it in that direction.. It was easier to pull it off the metal fitting than the housing...

    This water pump seized... Takes both hands to turn it an 1/8th of a turn.. 224k miles is the limit on this replacement pump.

    On other news... That hose I ordered and needed to replace arrived today... It was the wrong one... Because I took a picture of the throttle body with the hose, I showed the parts guy and ordered another one... This time I got a matching picture... 3rd time is the charm I guess will see tomorrow, or Friday. Also my radiator started leaking... when it rains it pours I guess.....

    Ok, replaced my radiator at work, its a 2 hour job, if you have semi-small hands... lol... there's 4 bolts, driver side top is the easiest to remove... I'll go more into it later when I get pictures....
    I got the hose I needed. Part #16281-38010. There are changes to the webbing on this hose as its longer, covering areas that are more exposed to heat. The elbow on it was giving way, so I ordered a hose which I thought it was and its a separate one, its similar shape, but no webbing. Rushed through the swap, so I didn't get a chance to snap a pic of the new one, but this is the old one out. The last image shows where the webbing was extended to vs the old one.
