Weight hanging off bedside/rails (how much is too much?)

Hey guys, my 2017 didn't come with the bed rail system, but now I am looking for options to mount a shovel/axe. I have come up with a solution/mount that would utilize two of the threaded holes. My question is, should i be worried about that amount of weight hanging off the bedside with only utilizing two of the holes, rather than distributing it the full length of the bed like the rail system does? I'm sure driving down the highway I would be ok, but how about on bumpy logging roads? Thanks for any insight, and I'll post pics of my setup when it's done.

Some guys just buy uni-strut and mount it with the factory holes, then mount whatever to it.

Check out @csuviper build thread or the do it yourself thread. Hella good information in those.

If I remember correctly, the factory cleats could hold up to 200 lbs, so what you are doing should be fine with that weight.

Yeah, I saw the thread about using the unistrut. Don't really need additional mounting locations at this point, and I *think* what I have in mind will be a little more low profile.

Thanks for the info on the weight rating for the cleats.

I have the rails..I trust them enough to keep stuff sitting on the bed floor from rolling around but not enough to hang weight from them.. I don't think An axe and a shovel is enough to bend the sides of the bed.. If I was to hang weight from the rails I would design my own system in the shape of two legs that go from floor to the rails bolt holes and a connecting cross beam

Thanks. The axe I have is just a 3.5lb fiberglass one and my shovel weighs 4lbs, so I am guessing I am under 10lbs with the bracket.

Even though the shovel and axe don't weigh much, if you're off-roading, there's quite a bit of force on the bolts. Unistrut doesn't cost much, spreads out the load, and gives you some versatility on where you can mount the brackets.

Better safe than sorry. If you're not going with a rail, I'd at least spread the load across 3 bolts instead of 2.

Track gives you all kinds of future options. This is factory but uni-strut seems to work well for less $$$

If I were to hang the axe/shovel off the rail/unistrut, essentially all the weight would be on the "lip" of the rail (of course before being spread to the side of the bed), correct? So, is the lip of the unistrut strong enough to handle the same torque if there are only two small attachment points to the rail? Thanks

Yes, the unistrut is very stout.

    Cut and pasted from another planet;

D-ring & Deck rail load limit

I emailed Toyota today inquiring what the load limit is of the deck rail tie downs and the D-ring tie downs.

Here is their response;"Both the deck hooks and the truck bed D-rings mirror the weight capacity of the deck rail, which is 100lbs"

Best answer yet! Probably the most accurate

Anyone know what size bolts to buy for the mounts? I'm going to add a strut and am going to need some bolts.

Just drilled and bolted through the bed. Only problem is I think drilling through the bedliner voided my lifetime Linex warranty. Still needed it.
    IMG_0464.PNG.jpg
Also added some rubber furniture feet so the can wouldn't rattle and had to add a couple of shims underneath to level it on the uneven bed.
