Hey yall. In order to approach the better angles of smaller wheelbase vehicles, what height lift, size tires, bumpers, etc are needed?

Big truck guys in crawling circles typically go 37 minimum to help out with wheelbase, where does a tundra and our wheelbase need to get to reach the next level of capabilities?

    Has anyone measured their angles?

Reasonable? IMO, if going over large obstacles is your thing, our trucks need height and big ass tires. Me and a few others roll on 40s. We drive over big rocks while others not on 40s have to zig zag around them. But when it comes to obstacles, like a waterfall for example, we need the extra height to break over it. My truck has a 7” lift and it’s still not enough. Soon I’ll have 9” at the rear. Will it be enough? I doubt it. 42s or 43s might be the next level shit but you’d be breaking everything. Approach and departure angles can be addressed with high clearance bumpers, which have worked wonders for my truck.

It’s all about your bumpers. Especially the rear. You’re not going over anything without relocating that hitch.

Joon nailed it. The worst thing is the hitch then the bumpers. With 37" tires and about 3" of lift I'd still find that stupid hitch dragging on stuff.
One of the best mods I've done.bumper hitch.jpg

Even with my high clearance rear bumper I'm still mashing it

    Good post.

I just returned from the first road trip in the 2021 Tundy and wow, this truck is terrible on dirt roads.

Damaged the front skid plate to the point of needing to hammer it back into shape, scraped the gas tank skid, many times and excavated lots of dirt with the rear hitch. All while driving really slowly on normal forest roads.

Yeah, these trucks are long and low….

Don’t think I can lift my way out of this mess. Not interested in building a bro dozer.

It will never wheel like my old 97 Taco that had a 2” lift and 1” larger tires.

The 2021 Tundy will get a 2” lift, 2” larger tires, bumpers, skids, locker and that’s it. I’ll be dragging my junk through the mountains.

OP, not sure what kind of off road you do. Good luck.

Man, that sounds like a road I want to drive. Ive never seen a normal forest road that offers all that. Sounds exceptional! :p

    Capitol Creek road in Colorado.

The 2nd half of the road has one steep section, a few pot holes and moderate erosion. Also the water bars caused the center and rear to scrape on every one.

Another road was off of Kebler pass near Crested Butte. Was diving at about 3 miles per hour over a pothole section of trail. So slow, the suspension was not even working. The truck gently rocked back and forth as the wheels went thought the holes. Then, SLAM.

A hole, large enough to make the front skid slam to the dirt, stopped the truck dead in its tracks. The 97 Taco with 2” lift and 1” larger tires, does the same section without issue.

Utah desert, dropping into a wash crossing, the front, mid and tail scraped.

Guess the Tundy is no Taco.

Yep, bone stock. Long and Low. Tank hangs lower than the frame. Dragging my junk everywhere.

Not bad mouthing the truck. It is what it is.

That’s why I like this thread. Get to see what others are up to.

The hitch is from Westin (part # 58-81035H). I cut their ends off, flipped it upside down and welded it to the frame. This was done when I boxed the frame so it's also welded to the boxing plates, basically double butted.
