Driving to work on Saturday morning in the pouring rain and I saw a late model Tundra on the side of US HWY 14 with hood open and hazards flashing. Can only assume his engine gave up the ghost. Not a safe situation if thats what happened.

Nothing new. Same as all recalls. If there is a recall, and your vehicle falls under it, the manufacturer will notify you via the snail mail. At that time you may schedule the work to be performed at an authorized dealer.

I just read a post on the tundra subreddit that the dealers are getting prepped to start receiving them. Training had to be conducted, along with some mods to their service bays to accommodate the swaps. They said they expected each one to take somewhere around 20 hours of work (maybe slightly ambitious estimate). But I’m sure they’ll get quicker as they go.

I just put out a new video where I go over a behind the paywall AutoNews story by my friend Richard. It is part of my truck news recap series.

Honestly, nothing concrete and same as before. Toyota supplied marketing material.. Same story about metal shavings although new 2024 trucks are failing and Toyota quietly replaced many parts within the engine including new short and long block, bearings, etc.

There is a good video in Russian with this new engine analysis (from a new Lexus LX) that failed after 25,000 miles. Very poor design. Oil lubrication is not adequate to the engine performance. Oil pump is too small. Etc... Long story short, they extracted too many horses and torque from this poor little engine without properly reinforcing it. 10,000miles oil change intervals on top of it is asking for troubles...

I wonder why people trust Toyota with tens of thousands of dollars and then question them when they give you a reason for a problem?

He even says "kak na Camry".
@22:00 min, he shows the size of the oil filter, also compares it to the Camry 2.4L engine

Got a new engine installed (Santa Barbara, CA) and got the truck back today. Not a short block - I asked specifically and was told, "It's a whole new engine." Also told mine was the first one they got and did. Not sure how I feel about being the guinea pig. But the truck runs and I drove it home. Debating what to do now, but it's a whole new engine on a vehicle with 27k miles on it.

I'm not sure I buy the undersized oil pump theory. As long as the oil pressure remains in spec throughout the design RPM and operating temperature band, wouldn't that be adequate? Is anyone experiencing low oil pressure at idle on a hot engine?

Very good piece although I'm sure the Gen 2 guys will still demand a refund and reach around for the pain and suffering they've endured.
I've been at the dealer 3 times since the recall and they had the same input. Not that many failures and replacements are manageable.
Toyota is doing what they should be doing. Identify and isolate the problem. Determine how to remediate and then develop a process. The lift you discuss reminds me of the lift jigs BMW had to replace main bearings. The techs could do the job in a day.

Not trucky but the amount of recalls right now is astounding. Ford earnings are crippled. Hyundai problems galore and even Honda just announced a massive recall.

I think you nailed it on this one with process information that was new.

Nothing new in that video at all that dealership techs haven't already shared on Facebook. They've actually shared more than what Kent Rice shared. And not only that, but a certain someone has kept folks more up to date than anyone else on Facebook or here. All for clicks, views, and money.

The answer is very simple. Getting older is also getting smarter. BS detector = life experience earned with tears and blood.
I made a mistake buying a brand new redesigned everything truck. The list of my issues with this truck is much longer than what is being addressed by toyota. My local dealer cannot fix anything. The wort part for me is gas pedal hesitation that is constant and annoying..

Its not only the pump. The guy also compares it to other turbocharged engines from the oil lubrication stand point. Your oil pressure gage simply tells you that according to design it delivers good pressure. But what if design is not adequate... :)

2023 and 2024 engines have exact same failures. After they corrected the debris problem...

Oh I’m getting older too. I just find arguing about what actually caused the issue to be tiresome. There’s no point to it. The final result of getting a new engine is the same no matter the cause.

You sold your truck for full money back. So obviously not much else is in it for you other than getting youtube views and likes from happy Toyota tundra owners. :)

For me it is NOT a simple engine replaced and all done kinda deal. I put my hard earned money in to it. Lots of it! I care!

Exactly ... for some reason that thin film of pressurized oil is not being maintained between the #1 bearing and crank is my guess.

First of all, I took a pretty big loss on the Tundra, so not full money back. Second, I'm a journalist for crying out loud. My job is to inform the public.

YouTube views and likes? C'mon man. If that was my goal, I sure as hell would NOT have done the video above. Instead, I would have lit a truck on fire or had some girl on with a big chest and tight shirt.

This world isn't all about money.

2023 models are under the recall, so throw out that statement. The 2024 models having an issue is very interesting. Does anyone have a count on how many? I haven't seen a lot lately.

Obviously as a customer I don’t have access to Toyota highly classified data.
It’s all from Facebook groups and some YouTubers who aggregate all this info and make a video.
Our Canadian FB group is scary. Specially the comments section where lots of ppl share same experience.

I've been keeping an eye on it when I have time. I'm trying to provide people with unbiased information on if buying a new Tundra is a good idea. Right now, I have a lot of concerns about reliability. And I have a lot of confusion over the hybrids not being recalled. It certainly doesn't feel right to me. Toyota, officially, won't comment, so I don't have much to report on besides speculation. I really, REALLY try to avoid sharing speculation. All that does is create more noise and nobody needs that.

you don't understand it since its not what the deal is, lol.

if it was that, you would see WAY more failures at this point.
