My 05 Tundra 4.0 V6 with the 6MT and stock tires is doing about 2600rpms at 65mph. Seems kind of high for my liking but the engine has 152k miles. How do these engines last so long at these Rpms, I’m sure many of you drive 75+, that is very close to 3000rpms sustained for thousands of miles. How do you guys feel about this.

well just a side note, toyota it seems always tunes the engine/transmission to be the same across all models. roughly 2100-2300 rpms is right around 70-75 mph. ive noticed this in my 2014 v6 4.0L 4runner, 2016 v6 3.5L tacoma and the 2018 tundra v8 5.7L

I think my truck is around 3,000 rpm in 4th at around 70mph measured at the speedometer. Seems like maybe someone changed your gear ratio of you are running tiny tires. Or possibly you aren't really in 6th gear?

Stock tires on 1st gen Tundras regular or access cabs are 29.5” (245/70r16). 6th gear is 0.85 and the rear is 4.08 for a 6MT. Pretty high RPMs, a 3rd gen Taco 6MT is doing 2200rpm at 65mph.

Unfortunately, it is normal for the 4.0 and manual transmission. It’s the tranny/final drive ratio that makes it rev that high at freeway speeds.

Looks to be the perfect excuse to install 33’s:D

    My 2006 4.7 with p285/70/17 (45lbs each) tires runs a hair under 2100 rpms at 70mph.

I think the 4.7 come equipped with 3.90 differential? If I boost the tires on mine to 30.5” like on Tacoma’s, I can save about 100rpms.

Not sure if you've been using this, but it helps me to plan tires and gear and such.

And the gear ratio in 4.0’s regardless of auto or manual is 3.73 (maybe 3.77)

You could compromise and pick the best of both worlds... p265/75/16 comes out somewhere around 31.5 (ish).

Thanks again @speedtre for the correction on gear ratio difference on the tundra 4.0. I don’t know what the rpm variation is on the v6 tundra but I can say that my 2007 Tacoma auto 4.0 ran 2150rpm @70mph on 265/70/16 tires.

Tacoma’s with 4.0 run lower RPM and are rated higher for towing (6500lbs mac) than the Tundra with the same engine. Does anyone know why the larger Tundra V6 is rated for less towing than Tacoma with the same 4.0

I'm guessing it's a GVWR issue...it's the same powerplant and more weight for the vehicle, so it makes sense that the tow rating would be a little lower on the larger vehicle...?

I usually cruise around 65MPH/2,000 RPM. Our interstates here are what you would expect in TN, windy and sometimes dangerous.

About 2000/2100RPM at 65MPH. I cruise at the speed of traffic, so sometimes that’s 75MPH, and sometimes that’s 5MPH.

check out this Tacoma thread talking about the Tacoma 4.0 6MT Highway rpm. All Tacoma v6’s ran 3.73 gears from 05-15.
