What parts of the 3rd Gen 2022 Tundra are made in house by Toyota ?

You can ask this of any brand, sure, but this is the Tundra forum. And this is a brand new product right down to every bolt. So I think it's a good candidate as a new product, and a fair and good question to have discussion around, especially for current and future owners.

If I am buying a 2022 Tundra I'd like to think I am buying "a lot" of Toyota in house made and assembled, for the legacy Toyota reliability and long term ownership reputation.
I have always bought Toyotas with a 10 year ownership plan, and no extended warranty needed.
Is that obsolete thinking in 2022 with this Tundra?

    Also.
I do not want to hear about "it's a supplier defective part" when problems come up from Toyota. Once 3rd party supplier parts, cross into Toyota, Toyota owns them and is responsible for them just like if they came in from Toyota manufacturing plants.

    *****************************************************

What parts of the 2022 Tundra are in house Toyota made parts, under Toyota Quality Control and Scheduling Control ?

So two responses and from current RAM owners... 8^0 Excellent !

By "engines" do we mean what is inside the engine block , or do we go beyond to what is attached to the block too ?

    You're welcome.
We Ram owners researching the new Tundra, because we want one, have watched almost all the test drive and factory tour videos, and downloaded available owner manuals in effort to learn all we can.
After all; this new Tundra isn't cheap, and the more informed we are the better decisions we can make.

From the known turbo problems, there is a wait for turbos from the supplier.
So this tells me the turbos or parts of them are not in house built and come from a 3rd party supplier. Someone please correct this if wrong.
From this picture, I am willing to bet there are more parts supplier sourced.
I know on the previous gen many optional accessories are 3rd party supplier and rebranded Toyota or TRD. i.e. Exhaust, tonneau covers
I know from personal experience with Toyota on those two items.
I assume this has not changed with the 3rd Gen.

I think we live in a world now where all brands share generic parts from companies that can make them in volume, cheaper. I want to know how much of the brand new Tundra is "in house Toyota built". This will cost more and means more - to me.
You are suggesting for example that the turbo parts needed for the downed trucks, might be coming from suppliers, that Toyota has ownership in ?
A stake with them ? Possibly, however it would not make sense for the supplier to be supplying Toyota only. Looking at it from a supplier like Magna in Ontario close to home for both of us.

Very little are "Toyota made" parts. Mostly, Toyota or any manufacturer works with suppliers to design to a specification. Toyota has the oversee of all those processes.

Engineering is about piecing together a wide variety of components from different companies that specializes.

When they find suppliers, they must meet the Toyota standard.

Ie. Turbos are from IHI, Garret, Mitsubishi, etc.

    Frame from Dana I believe.

ECU, from a dedicated ECU company, I do not know. Even the ECU is not all by that company. It contains ICs from silicon companies like Texas Instruments, Intel, etc.

Transmission may be from Aisin, which is owned by Toyota, but is a separate entity and operated as a first party supplier.

Toyota stamps the body panels, but the roll of metal is from another company.

Nothing is designed and made only by one company.

I think you need to define "in house". I doubt Toyota makes their own steel and aluminum, however they likely buy sized sections of material and then press, shape, weld, etc. in their factory.

They may make their own engines, but I would be surprised if they make things like their own bearings, belts, chains, wiring, spark plugs, ecu, etc etc. Even the pistons can be outsourced.

Headlights, tail lights, air bags, infotainment, guage cluster components, wheels and tires, brake rotors, pads...i would think all of that comes from outside suppliers.

My guess is that more of the truck comes from outsourced suppliers than "in house".

So go back to my OP and the question. Based on the Auto world you are describing in Feb 2022.

I ask you...... et al.......for those that keep their truck longer term 7 - 10 years, without worries in the past because it is Toyota.

Is the 2022 Tundra a Warranty Purchase now?

Meaning you do not own it without having warranty coverage on it?

I think it's 50-50. And only because it's a first year, all new model. Like said above, major issues will probably arise within the warranty period or at least other owners will experience these issues and you'll know what to expect. If I was buying the Tundra a year from now I wouldn't worry about an extended warranty.

I purchased some additional mileage on my warranty only because I know I will go well over the base 60,000km in the first 3 years. I upped it to 3yr/80,000km because otherwise it would basically be a 2 year warranty due to the lower 60k mileage included.

Yes...I would not buy a car in 2022 without a warranty, preferably a warranty with coverage as long as possible. 1. The vehicles are more complicated with more to go wrong and when they do go wrong they are expensive, 2. Since Covid hit the auto industry build quality has dropped like a rock across every manufacturer, with labor shortages, stops and starts, parts shortages, parts not up to spec, tight deadlines etc.

The warranty thing is a good point. I ordered a '22. I also bought the 84 month/200,000km warranty. If I had bought a 2015 - 2021 Tundra, I would not have bought the extended warranty due to the proven reliability of the truck. While I'm confident that the '22 Tundra will be a reliable truck and that Toyota did a good job, it's the first production year of a new model and as such unproven over the long term. It's also a new vehicle with electronic components and advanced systems that get very expensive to repair, even if they're relatively minor. The days of a mechanic quickly diagnosing a faulty part and replacing it for a couple hundred bucks are over.

$4700. Pricey initially but having direct experience with how fast repairs add up on a newer truck, I'm okay with it. I do wish we could shop warranty pricing around here like they can in the US.

Lots of Denso branded parts inside the engine bay, which means in-house made in Japan parts.

ECU looks like could be made by Panasonic. If you navigate to the licensing part on the screen, it states that the actual UI software is made by Panasonic.

Here is an example. The fuel pump is made by Denso, which should be a made in Japan part.

Has anyone found any new information on this topic? I was told by my dealer that there are 60+ computers on the truck and they are not made by Toyota.

From the Motorbiscuit story, the Sequoia and Tundra are made side by side in San Antonio. I was waiting around at my local Toyota dealer and spotted a new Tundra sitting just outside the show room, so I went over to look at it. But...wait...it was a Sequoia. The front end is IDENTICAL, and I even sat in front and rear seats. I could have been sitting in my 1794 Tundra. OK, maybe there was a tiny difference somewhere, but in a couple of minutes of looking I could not find one. So yea, side by side 'cause they use the same part.

Nothing changed in Gen 3. Toyo and all OEMs have outsourced parts for decades. Example:. my wife's 2009 Lexus had the exact same rearview mirror as my 2008 Chevy 2500. It was the same homelink/outdoor temp model GM used with a different trim where OnStar buttons were in the Chevy

In 2017, I took my dad to the plant in San Antonio for the tour. If you can do that, I highly recommend it. Anyhow, the complex there has several different buildings. I know that their plastics company is there on site, and the sheet metal is stamped there as well. The engines and transmissions are built at different plants across the country, and there are also parts outsourced. The tour was pretty amazing seeing how our trucks are built.
