Washed my Plat for the first time this AM, and got angry enough about my "discovery" that I decided to post this here.

Why on earth would you ppl (yes, YOU ppl) @Toyota use regular plastic wheel well liners in the back of the truck, but use this almost felt-backed liner in the front!?!

I'm spraying and spraying and wondering why crap isn't rinsing off, then I noticed - little pieces of pine needles, and whatever other random crap simply wedged and stuck to the liner!
Why the hell would anyone do this!

Just imagine years worth of crap adhered to these liners......how about random dog poop you just happened to fling over the wheel well..............what about the poor skunk that had a death wish and has now become an underside coating of your truck?

Here's what the back looks like (and like every other sane car\truck has front and back):

    ....and here's the front:

I won't even ask why my "shark fin antenna" has a bit of play (do they all?), or why the hitch wiring receptacle/plug in the rear bumper is also loose and wiggles easy when moved by hand.

My shark fin has a bit of play as well.

The felt liner is for noise abatement, my 08 GS 350 had it on all 4 corners. I never got anything stuck on it that I couldn't rinse off with a hose. Don't worry, you'll be fine.

I think it has to do mostly with noise reduction and well. Saving the turtles, less plastic.

Noise reduction so you can hear the wind blowing through your window seals better

After a bit I also assumed/guessed that it's part of their "noise suppression" solution, but I still think it sucks!
    Go wheeling?
Wanna have those wheel wells shine up like my rear one does after a good wash and polish? Yeah, good luck with that.

    I, for one, am unamused.

Do base models come with "normal" plastic ones?
If yes, I'd go as far as purchase them at some point.

My damn "Platinum" model didn't even come with mud flaps. I know many down mind and take 'em off any way, but some of these "new" solutions Toyota is implementing have me wondering, at best.

My brother’s 2018 Chevy 2500 has the felt lining stuff as well. I believe it’s for noise reduction as mentioned.

All I'm hearing as you rant is

There is only death and danger
In the socket of my eyes
    A playground of illusion
No one plays, they only die
There's a prison in my mind
And the bars are gonna break
I'm as mad as a hatter
And strung out just the same
    Taunting rigormortis
I feel it draw me in
We're not ready to see you yet

Sounds to me you need to sell your truck or stfu. You had the chance to look it over before buying it and coming on here crying does nothing to change it. It's ridiculous how many people come on here to bash their trucks, when they had the chance to look it over before buying it. To me the problem is your laziness.

My 2017 Fiat 124 Abarth has this material for the underbody pan from the chin splitter to the engine oil pan. Not a bad application but it does hold water or so it seems. A fair weather convertible that has never seen salt and rain only 4-5 times in 36,000 miles and the fasterners are rusting to the point I'm looking for stainless. My rear inner fenders are like this but for the most part hidden from view and aren't lint magnets. Noise abatement? my ass. Not in a car with a Record Monza exhaust.

    My laziness?
Same as all these other guys who assume they are getting TWO outside dimming mirrors [b/c BOM says so) and end up wondering why only one of them is dimming?

    My laziness?
B/c I assume that do NOT need to check the quality of a trailer light socket assembly?

Ppl come to Toyota based on EXPERIENCE and ASSUMPTION (upon proven and previous performance) of quality.
I'm not here to double-check their homework. I'm a customer, not one of their technicians.

...and if my (invisible, granted) light-hearted bitchfest about some shitty change to rug-liners rubs you the wrong way, then please get on your high Toyota horse and ride off into the righteous sunset.

Exactly what I'm saying. Do your research and know what your buying. Any idiot can look at the trailer light socket assembly and tell if it's loose or not or look at a mirror and see if it is dimming or not. Don't drive off without looking at the truck. Here this may help you on your heat Tundra purchase

Ok, I'm sorry. Your right, people need to be buying things without checking them out. I understand it's to difficult to do that and much easier to come on a forum to complain about what they didn't look at what they were purchasing.

Yup, b/c my 2017 Tundra did not have any such 'quality'/other issues worth even mentioning.

...are you guys sure you're not from Toyota cust. serv. dept., or one of the dealerships other users mentioned in another thread?
    Ya'll sound so........welcoming.

Could be worse. I've seen some new SUVs that have their underbody protection made out of that stuff. Even deep snow can take those off.

Sure but I disagree with how that was presented. Op is within his right to complain and present it to others.
Tone is hard to read in text and I was being sarcastic.

I've seen those .... whole underside (or a lot of it) or a car/suv covered.
I'm sure it helps with sound....but otherwise? But hey, that customer base won't care or even notice.

I question it's use on a "real" (and that's a little too optimistic as well) truck.
Even if those Platinum customers won't go off roading, what about just the aesthetics?
Surely this particular area could have been deal with in a different way - noise-suppression wise.

But, in the end, remember what the troops told you (well, me) here: STFU and drive the truck, or sell it.
...and don't speak if you didn't post a thing in years; only 'they' can.
Reflection of today's society? The intolerant tolerants...

    Anyway,
    Enough fuel for tonight's fire.

F150s use that same material type on the underside as aero panels. I remember taking them off when doing oil changes at the tire shop. Other vehicles do also and some were torn or warped here and there.

I definitely would be upset about any “loose” parts on my brand new vehicle but the cheap parts are a sign of the times. All the newer cars are becoming the same way with these light weight thin body parts. In effect to make the vehicles lighter to improve mpg’s but durability is taking a big hit. Minor fender benders are causing significant damage. IMHO the 1/2 ton pickup and equivalent size vehicles market can only go some far with gas mileage…as they say “can’t reinvent the wheel” and “a pig with lipstick is still a pig”. Manufacturers should always strive for improvement however there is a fine line here…
