Where is the sweet spot power wise in the 5.7L

New member here, just got my first Tundra. I also have a 05' 4runner w/ the 4.0 (wife's). Anywho, I was able to snag a 21' TRD OR limited in army green, a day ago. This is not a gripe, but I thought the 5.7 would have a little more umphfff. I have not got into the pedal yet, as I like to break in a motor a bit before doing so. I know the 5.7 is a great motor, just never driven one until now. I'm coming from a 6.7 powerstroke and have a Bullitt mustang w/ 480hp. The 6.7 was 400hp and 800 pounds of torque. So maybe I'm just used to the power in those, but I feel like the 5.7 is a little lacking in the bottom end. Truck has the TRD dual exhaust so I'm curious if that affects the bottom end of this motor. Does the 5.7 like the 4-5K range of the rpms? Am I off base with my opinion of the lacking bottom end power? I'm learning, new territory for me here.

Well put your foot into it and see. But it’ll never have the low end of a diesel.

It will never be a PSD but it does like 3k+ RPM. Tow/haul does help off the line.

I had a 6.7 PSD and that turbo would spool and push you back into your seat as it catapulted that 8,500 pound truck into orbit. There’s no comparison—the Tundra has nothing on the PowerStroke. But… it will last for 300,000 miles without fear of such scary things as: DEF, Nox sensor failure, EGR valves, Cetane, $150 fuel filter changes, 16 quarts of synthetic oil at one change, too small parking spaces, cold-start babying, gas pump whoops, etc. And yes, the bed on the Toyota is actually bigger.

I miss some things about my diesel, but it was a wiser move to get the Tundra. Enjoy it for what it is!

Yes a duel duel exhaust does cause you to lose a little low end torque.

Give the pedal commander a try. The 5.7's do tend to feel a little sluggish on the low end, especially compared to a PSD. If that's not enough go with a DAP tune and/or supercharger.

You will never replace the grunt feeling of a diesel no matter what you do to the 5.7L Tundra. Diesels are just far superior in all aspects of low end power and torque. Gas engines especially the 5.7L Iforce need to rev out to get you in the power band.

    The 5.7L is rated at 381 hp @ 5600 rpm; 401 lb.-ft. @ 3600 rpm
You can add a supercharger for more umphfff... making the truck, wheels and tires as light as possible will also help.

push tow haul button, your concern will quickly diminish. Toyota in their quest for better fuel mileage has alot of deadband in the accelerator pedal. You accelerate slower you get better fuel mileage. If you like tow/haul mode you will love the pedal commander. It manipulates gas pedal displacement vs throttle input. Big difference though is the transmission shifts normally. I left a F250 6.7 for Tundra. At least the Tundra can turn, not rattle your teeth out, not live in regen, blah blah blah.

As far as torque I am pretty sure my Tundra with my 5Klb boat being towed (in tow haul mode) could out run my 2017 Powerstroke to 60 mph from a dead start. Assuming both towing the same boat. Now when that changes as far as trailer load I don't know but it is not 5Klbs. Maybe 8klbs. Obviously a Tundra can't tow 15Klbs but an F250 can.

I'm coming from a tuned '18 F150 EcoBoost so I feel your pain. When you're done breaking it in and are entering the on-ramp on the highway, lay into it. You'll get a good idea of where the power band is ;).

I've got a Stillen CAI and DirtyDeeds exhaust system on my Tundra, so it has some balls, but you're never gonna get the jump off the line with these 4million pound, naturally-aspirated trucks that you'll get with anything turbo-charged like your diesel or a better power-to-weight ratio like your Mustang.

I drove an F150 with the 3.5 eco boost. Maybe there was something wrong with it. If I crushed the gas pedal, after a slight hesitation it would take off, normal driving staying out of the gas it was a dog. Nothing for free. Best drivability will be displacment, all the turbo have lag......

Yeah that hesitation is turbo lag. Like I said, my 3.5L EcoBoost had a tune. It hauled ass and had zero turbo lag, but any un-tuned turbo charged vehicle (like OP's diesel) will have turbo lag.

But I'm not here to argue about Ford vs Toyota. I obviously traded in my Ford for my Toyota for a reason.

I'm just saying that the powerband in the 5.7L is DEFINITELY not felt off of the line like a turbo charged vehicle, it's felt at 5K RPMs+.

I appreciate the informative posts fellas! Much more helpful than the stupid ass acronym comments the haters gave. I knew the Tundra wasn't gonna compare to a 6.7 in power. I wanted a Tundra and I was getting tired and concerned of the maintenance the 6.7 would need as miles racked. Figured I'd get out while I was ahead before, turbos, injectors, death wobble, etc etc ate me alive. I'm excited about my Tundra.

After owning a supercharged 5.7, I'll never own another gas vehicle without boost...I came from a diesel too and know I made the right decision on which gasser to buy...but the SC'r is the bug reason why...

You might try the Nanny Delete operation.
1: Hold the VSC button ~3 seconds (long enough to see traction control light on the dash) and release.
2: Hold the VSC button ~3 seconds again (you'll see traction control and another dash light not sure what it is) and release.
3: Tow/Haul mode for the better shift points.

Boom!! Feels like an instant 50 more hP :bananadance:

Comparing my since traded 08 to my 19 the newer Tundra are definitely not as responsive as the older ones were in lower speeds. My gas mileage has improved a bit so I suspect this has something to do with it.

can someone explain what turning this off actually does to improve performance?

I have no idea, but combined with tow/haul it works well. Aptly named Beast Mode by some. Throttle response is much quicker, etc., feels like you are driving a more powerful truck.

The truck feels like a dog with the traction control retarding the ignition or applying the brake to a spinning tire. With those features disabled you can actually apply as much of the 381 available hP as you want to.

The main thing is it will keep the ecu from cutting the throttle when it detects wheel spin. Can’t burn a proper donut with that shit turned on.

My 2007 has it's original "hyper sensitive" gas pedal, and I love it. Maybe you could find one of these old gas pedals for your truck, because a lot of guys replaced them with one that is not as sensitive.
