Does anyone know of any companies currently selling a camper shell for a 1st gen? As far as I know all the big names have stopped selling shells for 1st gens. Any information is appreciated! Thanks!

I received the following responses for new production camper tops in December 2022:

ARE CX Classic @ $2,475+ tax
    Snugtop Xtravision, Rebel, high-liner

those are the only new productions ones I could find.

I've bought 2 on FB marketplace.....first one was 75 doll hairs and the second had proper glass all the way around and ran me about 450.....Which I painted to match for significantly lower cost than new.

Attached is the quote I received from A.R.E. for a new prod.

I ended up finding mine on Craigslist for $120 cheap. Desperately needed a paint job though. You'll have to be patient to find one at a good price. All the other shells for the 1st gen on Craigslist we're listed at $1-2.5k no lie. I jumped on the $120 shell and picked it up ASAP.

I got mine on Craigslist in 2018 for $375. I had to drive 4 hours to get it but glad I did.

Dude, if I could find an ARE cap in white for an AC bed in white in decent shape, I'd be all over it like white on rice. I'd defintely drive the distance to buy it. I already have the clamps ready to go.

Truth is, I'd probably wrap it and toss it on the side yard several months of the year until I was ready to use it, but I'd be stoked just to know I had one secure and in my possession.

I don't know where you're located, but if in SoCal this place sells used shells.

We have a place that advertises in my neck of the woods. Hard to find one used that they've refurbished for under $1200-1400. And if you have them paint to match, add another $400-600 on the price tag.

    Damn caps are spendy!

They're such a fucking ripoff for what is essentially just a fiberglass shell. Meanwhile F150 shells are aplenty for way cheaper.

Is anyone using soft toppers combined with a bed mount ladder rack? I was looking at Fas-Top and Soft Topper. Is seems like Fas is the only one with a proper 6.5’ length. It’s a lot of money to spend for a low-security solution but I’m not really worried about that. And if anyone knows, what bed rack system would allow for a canopy installed at the same time?

I priced out an ARE commercial Aluminum and an ATC fiberglass topper in fall of 2021. I bet both companies are around. Are was 2400 and the atc was 1600.
I bought a beat one off Craigslist for $700. I should have been more patient or spent the ones on the new one.
They pop on Facebook marketplace every occasionally, but they are always $1000 to $1500. At a $1000 with windoors they sell in hours.

I had a Softopper. It was light and could go on and off quickly. If you are going to take it on and off or fold it down often, they are great. If you’re going to leave it on get a hard top.
Most ladder racks will work with a soft top or aluminum topper. Most fiberglass toppers fold over the bed rails.

Are you looking for a soft top and a roof rack that would fit on top?

add a photo of something you have seen on another truck.

You need to take into consideration the replacing the door or its glass will likely cost upward of $600-800. Just the side windows alone are in the $350-550/ea range. Prices vary from city to city also based on inventory and demand.

This post has a lot of info that will help you decide value: https://www.tundras.com/threads/camper-shells.94096/#post-2379108

Basically, it depends on a lot. Broken windows, cracked fiberglass, etc.

And that topper is so rare they may not even offer that part anymore. When I called ARE recently the girl on the phone couldn't give me a straight answer and told me to ask a local ARE dealer.

This is where I bought mine that leaked like a civ....I'd absolutely ask them to water test it before buying anything from them.

I'd hit the dedicated 1st gen camper shell thread that's linked above: https://www.tundras.com/threads/1st-gen-camper-shells.94096/

There's a gaggle of pics there.
