Where to get extra keys made?

I was out fishing on my kayak and as I was putting my keys in my dry box they slipped out my hand and down they went. Luckily I have a spare set.

Has anyone had experience with getting another key made? Would going to the dealer or a locksmith be better/cheaper?

I’m not to concerned about the fob. More the key.

They’re expensive as shit. It possible to buy a fob on eBay and have the locksmith program it. I lost a key from my total and it was like 125$ to program it. I think the key was only like $15.....if you know someone with techstream, You may be able to get the key and have someone program it for you

 

We have a local hardware store that can duplicate transponder chips and cut the keys. About $65 I think. The dealer charged me about 120 for a NEW key for the 4 runner I had. I had to get one made from the vin as both were too used to copy (worn smooth).

The same hardware store mentioned above can make a key without the chip for $5. I keep a chipped key in a lockbox in the cab, and keep a door only spare in the snow cat and one at home. I just need to be able to get in the door then I have a real key to get home on.

 

Does the key itself have any fancy tech in it?

Man. This is turning out to be more expensive than I had hoped.

 

It would have been cheaper to buy a floating fob for when your on the boat but I’m sure you already ordered a few to prevent this in the future

 

Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.
