I'm considering a Platinum but I'm on the fence about the Off-Road package. Would be nice to have the MTS and locking diff, but this would be our family vehicle so 99% of our miles will be on paved road and highway.

Which suspension will ride better on-road? The regular suspension or the off-road package's Bilsteins? Not considering the Air Suspension / AVS since towing would be occasional if ever.

Check the build link in my signature.
I don’t know about the Gen 3 but all the previous versions the TRD OR suspension was noticeably stiffer than the platinum suspension. I don’t anticipate that changed with the newer gen.

oh interesting - I would have thought it was the other way around. I've got a 3rd gen Tacoma now and have driven quite a few of them in different trims.... I'd say those go Sport (stiffest) >> Off-Road >> Pro (softest).

Can’t speak to the Platinum but when test driving Limiteds the TRD OR was hands down more comfortable. Same as the Tacoma TRD OR I enjoyed for 8 yrs.

Regular shocks are absolute garbage, feels like a boat when driving on regular paved road and can feel every bump. Get Trd

Platinum with the Advance Pack option. Then you have the AVS and can adjust your ride to 5 different settings. Stiff and harsh or smooth like a Lexus for those long highway trips. I held out for that and it was worth every day of the wait.

All due respect but you've got to separate AVS and air suspension. Air suspension isn't just a towing use case although it's nice for a trailer. Throw 800lbs in the bed and it gives you the correct ride height. No muss, no fuss, no sag. AVS is essentially real time damping for the shocks and has nothing to do with towing. Almost the same system used in high end Audi's, Ferrari's, Cadillacs, Corvettes and others. Simplistically, it can change the shock valving and I think the best use might be in a pick up. I leave mine in comfort on the highway and there is little to no bed hop, shudder and other things you just kind of get used to with a pick up. I didn't think it was a big deal when I got it and now I wouldn't buy one without it. My '22 F150 rode really well. The Tundra with the coils and AVS is probably 25% better than that.

On Corvette it is called Magnetic Selective Ride Control due to the way the system changes shock behavior by changing the orientation of magnetic particles. It works great. I am not sure Tundra's AVS operate on the same principle... IOW they might just have electrically operated variable shock valving... and I bet it works equally well even though it probably doesn't have a track mode. ;-)

I have a platinum and after about a year I changed the shocks out for the bilstein off roaders. The ride is slightly better but nothing outrageous. I guess the best way to put it would be it takes away that boat feel that wasn’t too bad to begin with. It’s definitely better on really bumpy roads or light off road logging trails. I wouldn’t spend the thousands to add that package to a platinum. I spent maybe $300 on takeoffs here in the forum and maybe $200 to have someone slap them in for me. The four wheel drive in every tundra I’ve ever owned has always been great and never let me down. Once in a blue moon I needed four low and that did wonders so I don’t think I’d ever use crawl control or a diff lock for what I do

Platinum with AVS easily, not even close for highway ride , throw it in comfort mode and it’s awesome

anyone who says off road package is better than AVS for highway ride is on something

I purchased a ‘24 Platinum with TRD OR package about six weeks ago. I drove all these suspension combinations back to back - standard, AVS, and TRD OR. I felt the TRD OR had the best overall ride. Standard was too floaty, AVS had very strange behavior over expansion joints (hard thud, like bottoming out) even after fiddling with it and the TRD OR was just right. We took the truck on its first long trip a week ago and my wife’s comment was the truck was as comfortable as our prior Genesis. I’m very happy.

Can the TRD OR set up be purchased and placed on a Platinum nonOR?

It's easy to commingle AVS and air suspension as they are in a package. Toyota could be clearer about it.
    Same with explaining the hybrid.
I really like the AVS although I'm sure the shocks are expensive to replace.

thanks @BoulderGT3 for pointing out how AVS works - that plus the Motortrend article spelled it out for me. Sounds like AVS is what I was looking for but the OR package would be a good bet too. Nice that Toyota has options

Drive them both before deciding. All Capstone’s have AVS so if there’s one on the lot take it for a spin. Play with the AVS suspension modes. Listen for the thump when the suspension bottoms. It’s pretty obvious. The TRD OR package is harder to find, at least around me. Thankfully my dealer had one in stock (Platinum) that’s now in my garage.

As someone else pointed out, AVS and Air Leveling are two completely independent systems…make sure you’re driving one with actual AVS.

And you won’t bottom out with the air suspension, unless you dukes of hazarding something , that was before the tsb

I thought it was standard but could be wrong. My dealer had four Capstone’s on the lot and they all had AVS.

So then does the Platinum TRD Off-road ditch the AVS and just get the TRD Off-road setup?

Anyone with a Platinum with AVS and a lift and bigger tires? Does AVS help at that point, any?
