I have the Retrax Pro XR. Love it from a usability standpoint. It is nice to be able to keep stuff secure in the bed and carry my paddle board using the T-slots rack on top. Looking at other covers like the tri-folds, it didn't fit my needs. This was one of the requirements I had to have when I purchased the Retrax. The canister does take up to about a foot of bed-space, and I had to accommodate it by purchasing a bed extender to carry longer items. Not a big deal, but slight inconvenience. I have heard that some people experienced leaking in their Retrax. Luckly, I have not experienced it. The company I ordered from also threw in a free tailgate seal to prevent water from coming in from the tailgate area. I would suggest you at least get one too if you want to maximize on preventing water coming into the bed.

I have heard the Retrax One Polycarb cracking when I was in the market. That's why I went with the Pro for the lifetime warranty just to CYA if parts start to fail. Especially, if you are dropping 1500+ on a cover.

Thank you so much for your reply. This is exactly what I was hoping to get, real world experience with helpful advice. I am concerned about leaking, so I’ll keep that in mind with regards to the tailgate seal. Where did you purchase that threw that in for free?
I’m definitely looking at the pro line now.

I purchased mine from tonneaucovered.com. They quoted me the best price shipped from all the companies I called and they threw in a free tail gate seal kit when I asked about it.

I have the ProXR and I love it. I had a trifold on my Tacoma and it warped in about a year. I also started with an ARE fiberglass tonneau, but didn’t like having to uninstall it when carrying big stuff. My only complaint is the lock. It needs a beefier lock.

I’m using the Yakima Overhaul HD. The place I bought it from recommended I purchase an adapter along with the Overhaul. I was not too happy about spending $600 for the Overhaul, $200 for the bars and have to purchase the adapter for another $100. Yakima should have included it if people are dropping close to $1000 for the entire setup.

I'm happy with mine so far. Only had it since I got the truck (about 2 months, 1200 miles) and have not used the slots to set up a bike carrier or cargo basket yet (which is why I went with this model - plus the added durability of the metal slats instead of the fiber-whatever ones). Furloughs hit work and I decided to stop spending money for a while - so I've not purchased the extra components yet.

If the truck is sitting on a slight incline with the nose lower than rear, it will pretty much open itself - rolls smooth, very little effort to open/close from the side. I hope it stays this way long-term.

I like the locking mechanism much better than what was on the Bakflips I've had before. It's more robust and I feel would take more effort for a thief to get in.

Speaking of Bakflip (which was overall a good cover too, IMO), the main plus of the rollback style top is that if you need the bed open, you don't have panels resting on your back glass. On the other hand, the Backflip could be easily removed/replaced by one person if you needed the full bed space open. Let me just say I have no intention of attempting to take this rolltop out. If it won't fit with the top retracted, too bad, it's not going in my truck. It will just be too difficult to remove/replace this top - it's heavier and more awkward, it takes two people (for most of us mere mortals) to safely remove/reinstall it without risk of damage or injury.

I installed it myself (wife helped me lift the unit into the bed). Set up/install of this top took a bit longer, but it's worth it to get it right and not have any binding when it retracts.

When first installed, I had some rain water get in on the driver side rear corner. Not enough to puddle, but it dampened a spot maybe 12" in diameter. Since then, it seems to have been dry after the top heated up in the sun a few times and seals formed around bed. On a trip where we encountered both heavy and light rain during travel, I found no wet spots when we got to our destination and unloaded. A tailgate seal is in the back of my mind, but for now I'm ok to live with a little possible intrusion - nothing I carry back there will be hurt by a couple drips of water.

I bought direct from Retrax and received free shipping. At the time, other places were priced the same, so I just went direct to the manufacturer. Only hiccup was they never sent me notification that they actually shipped it (as they said they would). I waited a day or two after their 3 day window, then reached out to them. They responded timely with tracking info. Retrax takes 2-3 days to build your order before shipping - apparently they don't stock already made product to fill online orders.

If you buy the Retrax, don't forget to register your top within 30 days to get the warranty! If you don't register, they may not honor the warranty (based on what I read on their site). Also, they have a couple of rules on how to maintain the top without voiding warranty - be sure to read and adhere to those stipulations.

    Couple things to add...

Compared to Bakflip, Retrax also has drain tubes up front. They route/fit similar between the brands.

The box to contain the Retrax top when it rolls up takes up room below the top - Bakflip does not lose this space. I just measured mine on the Crew Max 5.5ft bed, and the box comes out 12.5 inches from the front of the bed, and hangs down - giving 11.5 inches from bottom of the bed to the bottom of the box to slide stuff under. If that makes sense - still habe to be careful of the drain tubes with either top. Not sure if it matters to these measurements (I don't think it will, at least not significantly), but I mounted my Retrax using the Toyota in bed Cargo Rails.

Speaking of which, when ordering the Retrax you will want to be sure you specify this. They will send the corresponding mounting hardware for your specific application - they do not send both sets of hardware.

And since it's 90 degrees and sunny out, when I opened it up to get the measurement of the box, my singed fingertips tell me the black metal Retrax gets VERY HOT sitting in the sun. Probably a good idea to keep some gloves in the truck if you don't already (and unlike me, use them, lol).
