Why do 17" wheel options kinda suck?

Why is it that Toyota and aftermarket wheel manufacturers seem to focus on 18" wheels for the 5x150 platforms? I really want to stick to 17" wheels(for a number of reasons) but there are a bunch of wheels I really like from several companies only available in an 18". Or if they are available as a 17, the offsets are obnoxious. And the only Toyota wheels are the Rock Warriors which were apparently forged from gold.

Is there a technical reason for the lack of 17" options? I know brake clearance can be tight but what else?

Take these for example. I like these wheels a lot, and I like the +40mm offset in the 18" version, but the 17's are +0mm :bananadance:

I think their biggest priority is to simply follow the market trends. Unfortunately, that has been bigger is better even if the logic is flawed. I'm right there with you and looked long and hard at aftermarket rims myself. They had to be a reasonable price, easy to clean, aesthetically pleasing, a decent offset, proper center bore and lug pattern, be sourced from a reputable source, etc. Not fun and I had to compromise a little bit. Wish you good luck with your search!

I don’t know if I’d call 0 offset obnoxious… aggressive yes but still definitely still a good option. But I do agree there are a ton more options for 18 vs 17. I do feel the market is starting to shift a bit, look into smaller makers that cater to a Toyota crowd like ssw or scs you may have better luck than bigger makers that are out for the majority

Everyone want the poke and stanced look. I get it. It looks good, but then your cutting and hacking things that maybe didnt need to be, body mounts and what not. And then your scrub radius and stuff are whack. I am more of a function over form guy.

SSW has been blowing up my FB feed because they know I'm looking. They dont make anything north of +0. SCS is only 18" in the 5x150.

My secret is that this is going on an LX570, not a Tundra. I intend to do a Tundra control arm swap at some point which adds 1.5" width to each side the truck. So if I go with something that's even in the realm of 0mm offset, the total track width is going to increase like 8"

Even +35mm Methods would put me around where a 0 offset would once you factor in the control arms.

Have you tried reaching out to a company to see what it would take to get what you are wanting offered? They will either blow you off or you might get the wheel made. You never know unless you try.

I got a company that makes steering wheels to add a new offering because I showed them there was a market for it. So some do listen.

What I dont understand though is why method would make that wheel in my post in a 18" +40mm but then 17" is a +0? There are only a handful of trucks running a 5x150 pattern and all of them run the same factory offset.

Maybe I just need to suck it up and buy some 18's.

Is there really really a significant difference with a 1/2" of difference on each side (17" vs 18")? I can see it makes some sense in extreme cases, but is your use case really that extreme or does it come down to being limited by tire selection or other? Just curious.

Maybe because sales figures have proven that those who want the most sidewall also want a wide stance. Most businesses are in it for the best possible bottom line and don't really strive to appeal to all. I agree, at times it sucks being somewhat unusual.

Would love an SCS F5 in a 17x9" keeping the +25

Or several of the RRW options in a +25 instead of +0

From one Mass-hole to another, just pony up for the Rock Warrior wheels. Then tell me where you park so I can trade you some cinder blocks for them - consent optional. :)

Seriously, though. Just pony up, put it behind you, and be awesome with the coolest wheel Toyota ever made.

17" tires are cheaper than 18". When I checked for a new set of KO2's it was pretty significant in 35's. $300 ish

I've seen two people driving around Tundras with Rock Warriors over the past week and seriously considered asking how much they wanted for them.

Tire selection is part of it. Anything in the 34-35" range on an 18" wheel is automatically a load range E. I also have a set of very low mile 315/70R17's C range's sitting in my garage I could use for "free"

More sidewall is one bonus too

Icon Vector 5s are available in 17” +25 offset, and I really like them personally. If I was going for a less aggressive offset 17” than the more common 0’s I would consider them.

I like to search where sellers are most likely to be high. You either get really good or really bad pricing.

I actually was just googling for Evo Corse wheels and it popped up.

These are 17x8.5 +25. My first set of Icon wheels and I dig them. Good Quality and looks. Couldn’t stomach the price people wanted for Rock Warrior wheels now a days. My 2015 I got some on a trade wish I never got rid of them now. But these are pretty close. IMG_2141.jpg

I was digging the Evo Corses mainly because of their offset. I bought my Pro wheels with the intention to sell them and then buy the Evos, but ended up liking and putting on the Pro wheels.

We offer two really high quality 17x9" +25mm offset wheels for both the 2007-21 Tundra and the 2022+ Tundra:

I'll get on my computer later this weekend and write a post with my thoughts as to why most manufacturers don't offer much in 17" for the Tundras, but most importantly I can tell you that our wheels were designed specifically to fit the Tundra. I am a big time Tundra enthusiast. In fact I currently own three Tundras myself and at any given time during the last 20 years I have owned at least one Tundra.
