Why is a 275/70/18 so much more than a 285/65/18?

I am looking at these options for a stock TRD wheel Tundra. I was running the 275/70's in my last truck. Why such a big cost difference?

The 275/70 is $27 a tire more at the cheapest place than the 285/65. The 275 is 0.6" taller and 0.4" more narrow than the 285. That's pretty close, but the price isn't.

    Curious if anyone has insight.

I've actually found the 285/65 more expensive for instance on discounttiredirect.com a LT275/70/18 Ridge Grappler is $248. A LT285/65/18 Ridge Grappler is $281. What tire are you comparing are they both LT and same make/model?

That was my experience also. My LT 285/65/18 KO2s were around $35 or so more than LT275/70's.

Maybe more popular sizes = higher price?

Cooper STT Pro was $272 and $250 is the cheapest I found for 275 and 285s but this is where it gets weird. You are right at DTD it is opposite but much more expensive for the 275. $311 and $260 vs $272 and $250. Must just be the retailer I am looking at.

I was thinking the 285/65 was an uncommon size.

I've actually have never seen 285/65/18 at a lower price than 275/70/18 on the same tire, it's usually the other way around

I am in the market for new tires now and it seems like the 285s are all a bit higher on the sites I have looked at. ALthough I have not looked at these sizes before, Coopers, KO2, Nitto, Toyo were all 8-15% higher on the 285s.

Whoops, I just read my post and totally meant the opposite! Yeah 275/70 are always way cheaper than 285/65

Yeah I looked and BF Goodrich All Terrains were like $50 cheaper a tire in the smaller size.

If anyone is in the market for new tires and are thinking about Hankook Dynapros, check out Walmart. I picked up LT 285-65-18s for about $50 off per tire, free shipping to the store and up to 10% off on ebates (ymmv on ebates as they change the cash rebate everyday) PLUS $50 off Hankook mail in rebate.

Check the load rating. Most of the time if you see a jump in price is bc the load rating went from D to E
