Why were all the “influencers” so quiet about engine failures for so long?

We’ve been discussing engine failures on this forum for a year and a half or more. Seems like over the last few months is when everyone who had a YouTube channel decided to bring it up.

Did they want to avoid being eliminated from Toyotas good graces by discussing it before a recall? What gives. TurdJon was an especially quiet for the better part of a year.

    Probably a few factors.

    1. As you suggest, if they are dependent upon Toyota to make their content then they have to protect their own interests.
    2. There was no official count or hard data. Just random reports. Nothing organized or solid. Being chicken little would also not serve their own interests if it turned out to just be a law of averages mechanical failure.
    3. There were other issues that muddied the waters. With the bad batch of turbos causing failures it's totally logical to think that additional failures were just some that were missed or that had been unreported.
    4. Would any dyed in the wool fan boy/girl really want to admit that Toyota, the king of reliability, might have a reliability problem?

I think the muddied waters and not wanting to cry wolf are the biggest factors, but that's just my opinion.

Shocker: many influencers don't have the critical thinking skills to look further into issues, and they also have a tremendous knowledge gap on the finer technical aspects of engines...

I am. I bought the Tundra based on a test drive and TFL’s towing test.

They didn’t let me tow a big trailer on my test drive.

Well Toyota has already identified the manufacturing date range of their booboo- its about 16 months worth from July '22 - Nov '23 - so maybe it was one built before that - many were.

I'm still not buying the "manufacturing debris" excuse. Even Car Care Nut stated it's possible, but not likely due to the failure point. If I was a betting man, I would say they used silver in the bearings, which is getting eaten up by the ZDDP in the oil. But that's just my opinion. I think Toyota doesn't want to fully admit how bad they messed up on this. While I appreciate them stepping up and replacing engines for folks, why not just come clean and say what the real issue is? You don't change the part number of the engine unless you changed something in the engine that separates from the original design. I'm quite sure it's the bearing material used.

Wait did they say till nov 2023? Mines is a may 2023 build and I’m not a part of the recall but my truck died on me twice and Toyota blamed it on my aux beams.

The original article on CNN i read had the above build dates for the vehicles though it listed earlier build dates for the engines - Now I can't seem to find that article yet found this one with a fair amount of details. Everyone affected is getting a letter very soon.

The article I read said Toyota decided to replace all the potentially affected engines because they took apart what appeared to be an otherwise 'good' engine (running well) and also found the beginnings of bearing damage to it also - so they really have no way to telling which ones got more debris left int them or not so Reputation wise it is wiser to replace them all for the Goodwill of all customers.

It also said only Non-hybrids because Toyota says the hybrid even with a locked up engine will still travel safely for a bit until you can pull over - I'm not sure that is going to go over very well with folks who paid the bigger bucks for hybrid tech - it'll be lawsuit time for them until Toyota wises up.

The current safety recall is for non-hybrid trucks built thru mid-February 2023. I don't believe the date range has ever changed since the original recall notice.

Well, Ive owned 20+ new cars in my life, never had an issue with a single one after a few years owning of each (mostly Honda/Toyota/Acura/Lexus). However, this HUGE sensationalisim people have when theres a problem is absolutly silly, its AMAZING how people freak out. The engine falure rate on the Tundra is less then 1% of 100,000 units out there. If I ran around all day long worrying about failures in life that have a 1% chance, I would need to live in a plastic bubble (and hell, even then the plastic probably has a 1% chance to kill me).

Imagine the posts Ive seen here with people saying they sold their Tundra because they worry about a 1% engine failure rate. holy crazy nuts.

Can you find me another car that doesnt have a 1% failure rate on a mjor component... probably not... so good luck with the new car if you worry about 1%

The Production Period range date is actually Early November 2021 - Mid-February 2023. From the most updated recall dealer letter.

2022-23 Tundra aprox. 98,600 sold units. 80 are on dealer stop sales.

The "influencers" didn't want to get banned from Toyota by reporting there was a problem. If they don't get invited to new vehicle releases, they don't have a channel. Its pretty simple, you see it all the time in every type of media.

It is 1% of early engine failures. Who knows how many will fail in few more years. How many will make it past 100,000 miles!? 150,000 miles!?

ppl buy Toyota for reliability. If new Tundra engine is less reliable then Kia/Hyundai crap, what is the point of buying Toyota!? Specially with their latest cheap interior quality and horrible assembly issues compared to Ford for example!?
