I'm in the middle of planning and selecting the items to do a full audio upgrade to my JBL '06 Tundra. I want the volume knob, Bluetooth, Rear Camera Display and CD player. The more options I see with Crutchfield and scAmazon, the more I want to stay OEM.

The OEM Radio 86140-04181 picture below came off a 2018 Toyota Tacoma. Will it fit my Tundra?

If not, is there a list somewhere of Toyota radios that fit the Tundra.

Don't think so. The 1st Gen Tundras do take a double din, but just barely. More modern units often incorporate parts of the dash too, which you can see in your 2nd pic as the face sticks out from the sides. That being said, if you have a hammer and a saw anything can be made to fit.

How about this? It says "2005-2007 Toyota SEQUOIA TUNDRA Navigation Display Screen 05-07 GPS 86120-0C160" in the description

Honestly even though I get the idea of staying OEM, you are going to have a royal PITA trying to swap one from a different model/year into your truck. With aftermarket, there are mounting kits and wire harnesses available to make the process easier. If you try to use a stock one from something else, you are going to have to research connectors, wire harnesses, etc and still have to fabricate those and the mounts.

You might have to get adaptor harnesses for both years and repin them

I just realized that if I go with that Scion T10015 or other Toyota OEM radio and no pre-amp RCA outputs, I will not be able to add amplifiers or subwoofers. Back to aftermarket.....

    upload_2023-11-24_9-20-38.png

Edit: Not without adding a converter. I called Crutchfield this morning and one they pointed me to costs $185. The way i see it, if I have to spend $150-200 on an OEM radio and then an additional $200 on that converter, I'm only $100 from this much more powerful Pioneer unit.

    upload_2023-11-24_10-21-18.png

I'm replacing all the speakers first and see how that sounds. If that's not sufficient to listen my podcasts, NPR and jazz, then I'll go with the Pioneer.

A month ago, I had the Pioneer unit and all other components professionally installed. New speakers on all doors, one Alpine amp for the speakers and one subwoofer with integrated amp under driver’s seat. I also added a rear camera. So far so good. The one tiny thing I thought I wasn’t going to miss is actually a big deal for me —> Volume Knob.

I have decided to return that Pioneer unit and upgrade to a newer OEM from a Tacoma: possibly the 86100-04162 pictured below:

    upload_2024-1-17_11-50-25.png

Wiring is not an issue since the shop actually creates their own. I thought I was going to use CarPlay for maps and music but it’s just easier and faster to just use the phone itself.

First question was about size fitment (width and height). Will those newer Tacoma OEM radios fit my ole Tundra?

Second question: given my two external amps and new wiring, is it easier to go with an OEM JBL unit or a non-JBL?

@empty_lord is that the same radio you have in your 1GT? I remember you had an 86 radio, but thought you upgraded to a newer Taco radio.

@Trueno, when you say "two external amps", are you trying to use aftermarket amps with an OEM radio? I'm assuming you'd need to toss a LOC (or two) into the mix to pull that off.

EmptyLord, please send me actual part number of the 86 radio you are using.

Shifty, I’m OK with the idea I will need to buy an LOC. but will I need an LOC whether I go with an OEM JBL unit or a non-JBL?

PT296-18190-20 its just a basic internally amplified toyota amp be forewarned. but it has apple car play and all that. the high level speaker sources can be used on some amps as inputs so you dont need converters like the rockford fosgate amp i have.

I realized I don’t need or want CarPlay. All I need is Bluetooth and a screen for my backup camera. A map with GPS and CD player would be nice but not a must have.

This is another option, taken from a Tacoma, for sale near me. 86140-04180. 2 years older and slightly smaller faceplate.

Bad news. Neither of these fit. Now I have two radios I don’t need.

This one requires a new bezel. I thought about cutting up my bezel but I worry it won't look right and cheapen its look.

If all you want is a volume knob and don't care about apple carplay, I'd check out some of the older style pioneer and kenwood double din radios on crutchfield. Here's a couple examples:

    Kenwood Excelon DPX795BH
    [IMG]

    Pioneer FH-S722BS

They make kits to match up with the factory dash and they also show you all the harnesses that you'll need for your specific truck. Just go to their website and plug in your year make and model, as well as if it's a jbl system or not and watch as they answer all your questions for you.

There's no reason to try to take a factory radio from another vehicle and trying to incorporate it into your older tundra. Much easier just to get a new one all together and will perform much better than anything toyota has ever put into their vehicles from the factory. Plus, they are relatively cheap, especially since you aren't asking for much (volume knob, bluetooth, output rcas)

This looks to be a great solution. I might try to put this in my 02. Thank you!

Yo @Trueno, and been a while since your posted experiences, but...sounds like what i've been thru [minus the couple 'trial radios' you purchased]. Similar to your criteria, except I wanted 'hard buttons' for the Vol, Mute, Phone, Source, Radio/Trk select..., but not a Vol knob or CD.
So Im curious what you settled on?

I looked at many brands/models online and hands-on over last 10 mo's [not in a hurry since my OEM still works], and it all led me to the Alpine ilx507- Five BIG things, for me, about the 507:
    1. IR Remote- handheld or velcro'd to side of console where I can reach by memory and not have to reach HU buttons for basics, especially Vol, Mute, Trk/Sta select. BTW: some HUs [not the 507] require 'VOL UP' changes by individual, repeated button pressing- F'n annoying
    2. Altho only 7" screen, its likely better daytime viz b/c of high pixel count- not necessarily brighter, but sharper for sure..
    3. Ambient light sensor- you dont need to flip lights ON/OFF..just preset your DIM BRIGHT levels and it Brightens or Dims automatically based on level of either that you set. [ measures cab ambient conditions.]
    4. HD radio: I listen to npr, college jazz, sports stations and most output is in HD [SoCal area] and even if not HD broadcasting, it has RDS, which at min displays Sta/Artist data].
    5. 2 Cam inputs [rear/frt] switchable from the hard buttons [i think].
So, OTOH, the Toyota PT546-00170 headunit:
Im still on fence about $700 Alpine tho [and a near 10% unhappy to 'returned for another' customer reviews, if theyre legit gripes] and that led me looking at the Toyota '17-19 HU fr/the FRS86/Scion iM...but it comes w/its own issues on install [compared to 'Big4 aftermarkets'] and No 'HH-remote' option [for us non-SWControl-GEN1s] and less important to me: No wireless AA or CP. Its also a slightly smaller display size, but being Toyota, likely excellent Viz AND has a good size VOL knob. BUT also, add the tedium of sourcing correct harness/peripherals, install wiring and the unknown of what else this HU cant do when installed into 'non-FRS86', etc. [BTW Toyota PT546-00170 is the model that 'reportedly' fits perfectly in 05-06 Gen1 C-consoles].
Except for the $700, the Alp ilx507 sorta wins out for me, but the Toyota PT546-00170 headunit, to my eye, has the appearance edge. Pick your poison.

Gonna piggy back off this one.
    I got a used Scion/ Toyota Radio out of a FR-S.
Wanted to keep it factory looking.

Now, with that said yes it is a bit wider. I use to do fiberglass work etc for custom installs and wanted to clean this one up.
I got all the wiring and the jumper harnesses to make it work. Removed the indash amp and the radio is powering up.
Though I am having some issues that I believe is because of the radio I got.

Anyone doing something similar? Any wiring changes you had to make?
    2000 Tundra AC for refrence.
