There has been some discussion on the absence of crank bearing lugs on the V35A series engines. Really nothing new. This is not uncommon across the industry. Most of Toyota's modern engines do not use them including the previous 3UR FE 5.7L V8 engines, the 1GR or 2GR V6's in other Toyota vehicles that have proven to be powerful as well, along with lasting a long, long time. All engine bearing shells are normally secured by designed crush fit to secure them and if a failure is going cause a bearing to spin in it's bore, the lugs most likely eventually wouldn't stop them any way. Over the years I've seen many lug style bearings shear and spin in the bores in various brand older engines from lubrication, contamination, over revving, or whatever issues upon tear down for "autopsy". Back on topic, it would appear as a possible random issue with early batches of blocks coming out of the Jackson, Tennessee casting plant prior to being shipped to the Huntsville, Alabama assembly facility on the V35A.

    Who me?!? Ha!

I'm working on a series of videos around the V35A-FTS, both Type '17 and Type '21, as The Getty Adventures on YouTube did quite a disservice...

Not implying. Google their code or conduct, standards and oversight. Obviously it could be much better, but they exist.

Just got my 2022 Tundra back from the shop today after a catastrophic engine failure at 29,963 miles. I bought it last September with about 19K on the odometer.
First of all, I entered all of my info on the spreadsheet that I saw posted on some of these threads.

Here is the info they shared verbatim:
Debris in oiling system causing excessive friction in main bearing and caused bearing to fail, creating additional debris. On tear down, a leaking freeze plug was found in the left cylinder head, replacement of this cylinder head due to the coolant leak at the freeze plug.
Removed oil pan for inspection and found metal in pan. Removed engine from vehicle and found one main bearing damaged and coming out of the engine and leaking freeze plug in head. Replaced engine short block, left cylinder head (this required r&r of valves, springs, steam seal, and installation of spark plug tubes into new head), oil pump, valve lash adjusters, oil cooler, and VVTI cam gears with new. Cleaned all remaining components of debris, reassembled engine, replaced into vehicle, filled with new fluids, performed all initializations, charged A/C, confirmed hot heater and engine burped properly, test drove vehicle and confirmed.

Warranty costs charged to Toyota approximately $19,500

I also posted two images of the engine and bearing failure on my Tundra forum media page.

Has anyone had their engine fail outside of the powertrain warranty? If so, did Toyota cover it?

So since there was metal debris all over the engine, how high is probability that not 100% of that debris was cleaned out and it'll eventually fail again?

@ryanwgregg might have more info but I believe there have been a couple that have had two engine replacements and one with three. Failure rate on the replacement doesn’t seem to be any higher than normal 2022 rate.

It got a whole new short block, so pretty unlikely. It also got 1 new head.

At this point, Toyota seems to be approving replacement of anything that oil has touched...

Short block, both heads, all 4 cams, oil pump, and both turbos...

Do we know if anyone with an aftermarket bumper has had an engine failure and replacement yet? Curious if the dealer or Toyota gave them a hard time about it being replaced under warranty.

Not sure what thread to post this.. so maybe here?? Lol

I'm picking up my truck today. Last week I noticed a bad coolant leak and took it in to my dealer. Dropped it off early Wednesday morning. They gave me a loaner(rav4) and said it's either the water pump or timing cover. They replaced the water pump in about 2 days. Got the call on Friday and was told its the timing cover leaking and that requires them to drop the whole engine out for replacement. The dealer called yesterday and it's finished but they want to put test miles on it this morning.. Should be picking it up today in about 6 hours.

No hate on the truck. Love it and funny enough my last vehicle had a coolant leak from the timing cover(vw passat). Figured I would share with the group. Sounds like about a week to drop the engine, replace the cover/sealant, and install the engine again. Not bad IMO. Plus I get a new water pump lol

There was one guy who posted about his failure on the forum but then never came back with an update. He had the C4 bumper on and a bunch of folks were asking him that exact question. He’s the only one I know of that an aftermarket bumper with a failure.

2023 11,500 miles, engine stalked at stop restarted it several times, dash was lite up to exclude check engine. WS only a few miles from home thankfully. Made it back home with reduced power code. Toyota had it towed to the dealer. Not update yet. The tow truck drive started he tow another in the day before engine locked up. Found it at the same dealer. 2023 with 9600 miles, not sure of the build date. Very concerned and disappointed to say the least. Maybe looking for a low mileage 2021!
