I have the TRD dual exhaust on my 21 platinum and I was wondering if I would be able to install a bed step. From the looks of it it may be in the way

The TRD exhaust exits behind the mudflap, not out the back. Are you sure you have a TRD exhaust, or possibly a custom tailpipe section? That said, it looks like you’re right and it will most likely interfere with a bed step install, though I’ve never looked into how that works. I’m sure someone that has installed the step will chime in shortly.

Guess I bought the truck with fake TRD exhaust. I don't like that. Gotta get the real thing now. There's another $1000

It almost to me looks like stock exhaust was cut before it exited and then redirected out the rear instead of behind the mud flap.

Easy and affordable fix. You can take it to an exhaust shop where they can cut it and redirect it however you'd like

No need to get a whole new exhaust

Exactly this. No need for a new exhaust, just have a shop cut the end and redirect it. Should be simple and easy to be done and then install the bed step and all will be right in the world.

Also, I don't know if the "Diego" in your username means you live in or near San Diego but if you do, @dirtydeeds is the top shop for all your exhaust needs. They are in Escondido & Keith is the man to talk to. You'll see mention everywhere on this forum when it comes to exhaust.

I think the rear exit looks way better than the side exits. You could have an exhaust shop cut a little pipe out and shift the exit to the right enough to clear the step. The same could be done on the other side to even it out.

This is what the TRD mufflers look like. If yours look like this, then you have the TRD exhaust and they just reconfigured the exit like @Jaypown mentioned.

Here’s a pic I took of the muffler. I think it’s an actual TRD exhaust.

    I'd say so.
As others stated it looks like someone liked the rear out over the side out..

Previous owner didn't like the tips coming out behind the wheels. Zoom in and you can see the cut and weld job.
    upload_2024-4-29_23-9-9.png

I had to cut my TRD exhaust and redirect it to clear my leaf springs when I lowered my truck.

On both tundras that I have owned, I went under and cut the exhaust off at its lowest point after it dumps over the rear axle. No cab smells, no drone added. Have never liked tail pipes hanging out the back. Free fix to get your step installed.

Pics? Did you just do a straight cut or angle it? Thinking if I ever decide to delete my tailpipe like you did, I'd probably want to add a turn down.

    Something like this ..

It pretty much points straight to the ground. Cut it a few inches after the last hanger.

Nope not needed. I thought about getting just a black tip to put on it to clean it up, but have not got around to doing it. 10 min job with a cutoff wheel or sawzall. No other hangers to mess with or anything.

I love this idea, but I’m in Commiefornia. During a smog check, they got to stick a probe in the tailpipe. I wonder if it would cause me to fail.

They can put the probe in a dumped pipe too. My last 2 checks they didnt even use a probe, they only read the ecu

I could be wrong but I thought I heard once that exhaust tips have to stick out to at least the edge of a vehicle, whether it's the rear bumper, side outs or what have you.

Now if it is indeed true, commiefornia is the only state that I'm sure would actually enforce it lol
