Just installed the TRD Pro intake, is there any reason for me to keep the OEM stock airbox, filter, and rubber assembly?

I’m about to make a similar decision but I’m leaning towards just putting the drip in TRD filters in. Everything I’ve read is that Toyota stock boxes are great and just the filter upgrade is sufficient unless you want that “look”.

To answer your question I see nothing wrong with keeping them just in case. But I have the mindset of if I don’t use something regularly within a 6 month time frame I get rid of it. That doesn’t apply to specialty items/tools of course.

Yes because you wasted $400 on an intake that had 0 gain other than cosmetic appearance.

I used to use K&N air filters on everything including my classic car. I then read an article that they were actually not that good. They supposedly do not provide the air flow and horsepower improvements listed in their ads as they were actually more restrictive than stock. Also if not properly maintained they do not filter as well. Went back to the NAPA Gold.

K&N's are not less restrictive than stock. K&N's will pass more particles because of this. A known issue widely discussed here over the years. Efficiency vs airflow. K&N's are oiled cotton gauze. A totally different medium than what OEM and OEM replacement filters use. Pretty much all aftermarket filter makers make dubious claims that in most cases are true if you drive at 5500 to 6500 rpms all the time. Efficiency vs airflow. Apples and oranges. The ideal filter will maximize both.

I kept mine for over a year until I got tired of moving it around and looking in the box to see what is in there. Gave it to someone that needed those parts.

I figured if it has not moved in a year or two I do not need it.

It's always best to hang on to your pull offs, unless you never ever plan on selling your truck. Dealers won't give you a penny more for your aftermarket goodies.

A simple internet search asking if K&N air filters are better than stock provides lots of verified stats for air flow and filtration. Worth a look see.

I've done my home work on this as many of us here have. A simple search here on this forum will enlighten you on this as well as what other members here besides myself have actually experienced over the years. Pros and cons. Worth a look see. I bought my first K&N in the eary 70's. You can use your internet "verified" stats. Meanwhile, should the OP keep his air box or do you want to focus on K&N's?

It was a question that common sense would answer and didn't need to be asked. There's only so many reasons to keep it and they were already given. Did you not like the answers? Were you expecting some obscure, profound reason to keep it that you couldn't think of on your own?
I would keep it in case you ever want to build a Tundra from scratch. You already have one part in the bag. You could make a modified lawnmower intake, filter your combustion air on your furnace, make a butt plug adapter and use it to filter farts,...I can probably come up with 100 more if the answers already given didn't cut it.

Yes he should. If you choose to believe forum post rather than documented facts so be it! I was once believer and have done air cleaners and boxes as well on different vehicles. I never felt any difference and Dyno test never showed any improvement with K&N. If fact in many cases it was just the opposite. We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. Ok?

You paid for it, there is nothing wrong with it, and tossing it only helps destroy the planet. Therefore, you ought to keep it and figure out a way to repurpose it. I could easily craft something out of the material or at least some of the material. For example, maybe a gutter downspout splash diverter, maybe a cool planter with some miniature cactus for the workbench. Endless possibilities!

I think you're both saying that over the counter "upgrade" K&N air boxes and filters are a crock of shit.
    Sooooo, why the arguing?

Thats what I say. This was going the path of Trans Coolers, Console Safes and Oil Change intervals. It comes down to what the OWNER wants to do. The rest is just opinions. We need to agree to disagree!

Regarding what to do with the original airbox, maybe ebay it. I paid $200 for one with the tube from a 2010 not too long ago because I didn't like the K&N CAI that came with my truck when I bought it. I didn't realize at the time that the air filter is different for the 2010 versus 2020, but it's fine as long as I remember to buy the right one. Point being -- there are ppl out there who want them.

Like THAT ever stopped somebody from asking a question on the forum… what fun would that be? :D

Also, seems curious that solution number three is a “butt-plug” apparatus. At that point, I’m not really sure I want to hear the other 100 solutions you have. But now I’m morbidly curious… :boink:

Hold on to it if you think you'll want to go back to stock one day for any reason or as a spare for that "what if" situation. If you think you'll keep the new setup long term, then sell the original on marketplace.

If anyone still has there stock air boxes I would love to purchase from you. I purchased a used 2023 tundra with an aftermarket AFE Momentum GT air intakes and I would like to take that off and go back to stock.

    Brand new cabin air filter!
You'll have better luck looking in the 3rd gen marketplace. This is for 2.5gen

But if anybody in So Cal is looking for the stock airbox, I have a spare one that I pulled from a 2018 5.7 part out.

And to answer OPs original question, as many have said it's definitely best to keep your original parts from your truck. I learned this from my '02 Tacoma by putting a K&N open air intake then many years later throwing an AFE one on there. Which were both big mistakes thinking now that introducing hot engine air is not the best idea. Best intake to have is OEM or at least something completely closed off and sealed. Luckily I saved my stock air box for 20+ years which I'm going to put back in my truck after my engine rebuild.
