Which rack would you guys choose? I'm thinking about getting a rebuild kit too and see if I can't do while something else is on the truck Screenshot_20240423-232246.png Screenshot_20240423-232246.png Screenshot_20240423-232234.png Screenshot_20240423-232215.png

OEM or reman OEM. I have to assume your truck and 100,000+miles on it. The OEM lasted this long. Why mess around with something that you might end up having to replace in a couple of years?

    That ^^

It sounds like from others' experience on here, OEM is made by Jtekt.

@bmf4069 had his Detroit Axle unit for a while and beat the hell out of it and it's still going, but then again, average non-OEM parts typically only last 2-5 years hence why they cost less. You don't want to do the install twice.

I don't see any brands in your list I'd necessarily trust.

I put a Detroit Axle one in mine per bmf4069's recommendation, didn't send the core back to them (you don't get money if you do, they just extend your warranty). I'm keeping the old one just in case I decide to send it in for a rebuild. Solo Motorsports is rebuilding our steering racks now, but I haven't looked into it.

I was thinking of going BBB off rock auto but I guess that might not be a good idea. I was offered by a neighbor the option to rebuild my OEM he said he would have it rebuilt for me I am not too sure if i trust this neighbor though. where would one obtain a reman OEM from? does anyone know of any trusted shops to order from? the price tag from toyota for a new one is something like $600+ thats a bit pricey.

It is pricey. But if it helps, how long has your OEM lasted? And how much less $$ is the off-brand?

If OEM is $600 and will last another 23 years, and aftermarket is average $320 and will last 5-7 years (if you're lucky), you really gotta ask yourself: Do you want to be spending the same amount of money doing it twice and still getting 5-7 years less life out of it?

I think this is the big issue with the way people look at OEM parts pricing. Yes, it costs more. But there's a reason. Its a guaranteed-fit/guaranteed-compatibility part, AND it's likely going to last as-long as the original, which means you won't be under the truck again sludging thru this again probably for the lifetime of your truck. If you can install the part yourself, you're light years ahead of the game, because any shop will probably charge you $1,200 parts and labor to do the job with aftermarket parts...

Absolutely agree with you I think its the sticker shock that gets me. Paying the 600$ for oem and for it to last another 200k is cheap compared to purchasing a new vehicle and dealing with a car payment or just paying a shop to do it as well.

    Are you in Whittier CA?
This guy rebuilds oem racks from what he told me. He said $400 all in & installed. He has a shop in Santa Ana. I’m guessing he keeps your oem as a core and rebuilds it for the next guy. Iv never used the service I just saw the ad because I need to replace mine

Check out this item on OfferUp.

I got a quote for an oem rack thru my wholesale account with Toyota for $500 for a reman + $250 core

You got a quote from a dealer for $578? I would jump on that. I paid more than that for just the Toyota remanufacutured part, and the install was extra (very expensive overall). This was last December and I was told that new Toyota racks are no longer available (not sure if that has changed since). Considering the cost and time of doing this job, I would source the best quality part you can find.

578.45 is the price from a local dealership using the Mcgeorge toyota website it links me to local dealerships that have similar prices/discounts. I think all Toyota sells is remanufactured now.
