Someone on here mentioned a tool to fully retract the parking brake servos. I haven’t searched for it yet since I’m a long ways from doing rear brakes. (I hope)

This is nothing new. Anything with an electronic parking brake has to be put in service mode. This goes back to 2001.

We had 2000 suzuki xl7 and it was electronic...sorta, but with regular e-handle. You could feel how incrementally it would grab.

Sorry, I guess irrelevant to this thread.

Guess I've been lucky in my vehicle selection then. I've never encountered this before.

I have avoided this very thing as well. I have a bad feeling I won't be able to on my next truck purchase though. :(

I'm pretty sure I will just have to make my current vehicles last forever. I don't think I could live with anything newer than about 2005.

You sound like my brother up in Montana. His newest vehicle is probably a LL Bean Subaru...around 2004. His Chevy 3/4 ton 8.1L is a 2001 and still hasn't broken 100k miles.

I've tried the above procedure and it does not seem to work on the 2022 Tundra. I get to the point where I'm holding down the brake button and the "P" is flashing rapidly, but then the servos do not release. Does anyone know how to engage brake service mode on the 2022?

There’s no need for brake service mode on 3rd gen.

Here is my modest contribution to the discussion. The brake tool is $80 here in Canada (Princess Auto), and I'm in the middle of nowhere and need the new pads installed, so Redneck SST it is.

I made mine from a 9v battery, taped some wires onto the contacts and then used some leads from a multimeter.

Contacts: looking at the connection with everything still attached to the vehicle, positive on the right, negative on the left will spool out the piston. It is the same on both sides.

My suggestion - go slow and don't spool the piston too far too fast. You only need to spool it far enough to go over the new pads. Also, watch that the piston boot retracts properly. It has folds in it, so it should settle into the creases, but mine didn't and if I had just slapped it back together the boot would have been between the piston face and the brake pad. Once spooled out, you will still need to press in the piston. I used a c-clap style set of vice grips.

What is “spooling” the piston? I’ve always just used a c clamp and old pads to compress the piston. Does the tundra require turning and compression?

as for the parking brake you can set it up so the parking brake stays off. Would this not be good enough? Do you need to retract parking brake for pad swap? Or rotor swap?

9 volts worked just fine? (Others used 12v)How do you get the parking brake to “set”after the brake job?

I couldn’t find the brake tool at Princess auto. Is it,called something else?

The 3rd gen Tundra has an Electronic Integrated parking brake. Instead of a cable like on a mechanical integrated parking brake, it uses an electric motor to turn the piston in and out. So you have to turn the piston in first before you can compress it.

Also not sure if it’s doable, but on Honda’s I’ve taken the actuator off, 2 bolts. And turn the piston in from back side of caliper. Believe a torx bit fit in there. I would think the Tundra be the same.

I,kinda understand. I,just thought the electronic version was like the cable, and activated the parking brake inside the rotor. I,didn’t realize, the electronic parking brake activated the actual piston.

what I,don’t understand is you can deactivate the parking brake so can’t you just do that, and swap pads out?

Some use 12v, I used 9 and it worked fine, just slower. The Princess tool is called a “wind back brake caliper” tool. It is $79.

Once the work is done, just activate the parking brake using the switch in the cab. This will seat the piston to the correct position. You may have to cycle it more than once, but it is self adjusting and will “set” itself.

No. The parking brake only retracts the piston far enough to release the pads and allow the rotor to spin. To get new pads in place, which are thicker than what you are replacing, you have to back off the piston to make the needed space. From what I have seen, it can be done in three ways: 1 apply voltage to the electric motor as I did; 2 buy the wind back tool and manually wind back the piston; 3. Remove the electric motor from the back of the caliper as suggested above and manually wind back the piston (not 100% sure on this one since I’ve not done it).

If you do decide to wind the piston back in...make sure the seal doesn't spin on you. I tried that and it started dragging the seal and twisting it. Applying 12v to the pins was easier

Damn I attempted upgrading the rear pads and could not get the caliper off. Sigh……I am very mechanically inclined but need a visual tutorial. There is nothing on YouTube. I just decided put all the bolts back on as I didn’t want to mess it up.

I’m not really understanding why you guys don’t just disable the electronic parking brake then do the pad change? I keep mine disabled, don’t like to hear the noise coming from it.
