Transferring TPMS sensor to new wheel?

I would call discount tire or any other tire shop to see if their tool can read the IDs off the sensors. if not, you'll have to break the bead to get the IDs that are printed on the sensor.

 

I was told by some, that a scan tool can be used to program them without the serial numbers.

 

I was also told that there is some type of TPMS wireless device that could obtain the serial numbers without breaking the bead.

 

Well there is a wireless tool to capture the sensor info to download. Unfortunately, it didn't work on my 19.

 

Shop stated truck could read the new sensors and provided a procedure using reset button. That didn't work either.

 

Correction; after a few attempts and some time, the truck has learned the new sensors. No serial numbers or special tools needed.

 

Here is procedure:
1. Press TPMS reset button 3 times. Warning light will blink 3 times. When relearning, light will flash for about 1 minute.
2. Drive at 25 mph or more for 10 to 30 minutes. Relearn is complete when light goes off and pressures are displayed.

 

@tundracrazy i bought a new set of tpms for my new wheels from Toyota. Does it still work with 4 new and one old one in the spare tire? Discount tires already installed them on my new wheels but I haven’t put them on my truck yet. But I’m hoping it works after I get my leveling kit installed. Thanks in advance!

 

The spare doesn't have TPMS.

 

I guess I should be fine with 4? As long as they resets it should work?

 

I received the parts noted above. However I’m confused as to how they fit and why they aren’t flush to the rim? Which orientation should I be installing them. Thank you!!

 

What wheels are those? Does it have two valve stem holes? They should sit directly on the lip and point outwards like this:



Some wheels will have two valve stem holes. One for the sensor, and one for an additional valve stem.

 

I put my TPMS in My Methods. they work just fine

 

Mine are the icon rebounds. I’ll take another look later when I’m home.

 

Just checked again and these aren’t sitting flush. How is Toyota of Cool Springs return policy?

 

That's weird. That would be the first time I've seen an aftermarket wheel that did not accept factory sensors.

I have a 2017 steel wheel. Just saw a set of 20” wheels/tires with TMPS sensors from a 2018 1794 model. Would those sensors work in my 2017 or do I need to buy new sensors (0c070) to put into the 20” wheels? Many thanks!

 

No, you would need the aluminum wheel TPMS from a 2014-17 model. The ones you quoted in my previous post is what you'll need.

Once I get the sensors installed, will the ecu automatically recognize them? Or will I need to reset using tech stream?

 

I purchased aftermarket TPMS on Amazon and installed the on new wheels. After tire shop mounted new treads on wheels, I was able to register the new sensors via tpms instructions in the manual.

 

Can you link the ones you used?

These are for 2018-2019 tundras, 2016 and older require a different type.These included all the parts needed to install/fit the wheel and you could choose gloss or matte black for the stem.

Anyone know if the sensors from a 2019 SR5 with the steel wheels will work with TRD Sport (SR5 with TRD off road package) wheels?

Picked up a set of those wheels on ebay that are supposed to be off a 2019, but after learning I need new lug nuts, now wondering about the sensors. Wish I just had bought new aftermarket wheels at this point

 

From what I know. They will not fit perfectly due to the angle of tpms sensor.

That is correct. TPMS from a steel wheel will not work on the aluminum wheels.

 

Well, sorry for reviving this post but I'm going through a similar but weird dilemma.

I have a 2020 Tundra TRD Sport. I recently bought and installed a full set of wheels and tires including new TPMS sensors. After swapping the OEM with the next set, I proceeded per the instructions given (also in the owners manual) but it does not seem to work.

So, I first took it to a local shop to make sure the new TPMS sensors were working. They told me that they are able to read the new TPMS sensors and load to the truck but for some reason, the truck is still looking for the previous TPMS codes which (according to them) cannot be erased (don't even know if that makes sense).

Then, I followed the instructions in the owner's manual for reset (press the reset button for three seconds while in "ON"....the light will blink....and ...so...on) and also tried the relearn procedure (press the reset button three times..... and...so...on) but neither seem to be working.

So, I am wondering if there is a way to reset and/or erase all TPMS codes and start from scratch? OR, should I just take it to the dealership?

 

Do you happen to know the part number of the new sensors you installed? There are three different part numbers for the 20 Tundra

 

The instructions in the owners manual is only for resetting the air pressure threshold for the sensors. It is not for programming new sensors into the truck. In order to do that, you’ll have to take it to a dealer, or an auto shop. The one you already took it to are a bunch of morons, because, yes, you can erase the old sensors in the truck.

If you wanted to do it yourself, you’ll need a programming tool. I bought an Autel TS508 off of eBay and it worked great for me. (Some of the Autel models only read sensor data and don’t program new sensors into vehicles - make sure you get the 508 to do both. And make sure it’ll program a 2020, not sure about that.) It programmed the new sensor I put in my full size spare tire. Pricey, but I do a five-wheel rotation and I don’t keep the spare in the bed. So it saves me in the long run from spending $100 or so to get the truck reprogrammed for the different sensors every time I rotate my tires.

If this is just a one-and-done sensor reprogram for you, and you won’t need to do it regularly like me, you’re probably better off taking it to a shop and having them program it for you. It’ll be cheaper than the ~$275 tool. Call ahead first to make sure they’re not morons. Lol

 

Well, the guy I bought them from the internet sent me this part number (ALG-030187) however, don't know if that is an internal part number from his shop or a public one as I cannot find that exact part on the internet.

 

I honestly thought about that. How was it even possible that a shop that is supposed to work with Tires and wheels on daily basis cannot do that? monocle....

I was also leaning towards keeping both sets and swap them during winter/summer so, I guess I'll consider getting that tool. What you are saying makes total sense...!!!

Let me search in Autel website to see if the tool works on the 2020 model...
