I have a second Gen 08 5.7 and been keeping a close eye for years to see what toyota was going to do with the next Gen tundra. The primary function of my truck was to pull our 31 ft toy hauler. It's done a fine job other than gas mileage. Still waiting for the Tundra numbers to come out to see if I am going step up to a 3/4 or 1 ton.

I have a 2019 TRD Sport. I may consider the 2022 Tundra if and when it's finally released.

I wonder how the Nissan Titan can get over 20 mpg with a v8 but Toyota can’t..

Downhill with a tail wind, they get that number in a lab, on a dyno.

If it's the new 2gen Titan, that'd be best case scenario standard cab 2wd, with a tail wind.

My 6200 pound 4x4 big tow crew cab with 33's only gets 17.9 (never seen 18.0 or more) hand calculated on long road trips.
In town is more like 12-13.

GM V8s are the benchmark for fuel economy

 Compared to what? Its an all-aluminum DOHC, 10:1 compression set up that pulls 10,000lbs on 87 octane, makes damn near 400hp and regularly goes 250k+ miles with oil changes.

If the tundra had a 10 speed and weighed a couple hundred pounds less like the others it would be near the top of every performance category.

Pretty shit “ancient” design. If anything it makes Toyota look like rocket scientists considering how old it is compared to the unreliable trash the others put out and their 3mpg “improvement” today.

If Toyota can’t even tune their 5, or 6 speed transmission right, why you’ll think a 10 speed transmission will help???

Nothing much, just never in the gear I wanted, so I change it to manual mode and find out it’s a semi auto.

We've got a fleet model or whatever the hell Nissan calls it that I was in for 4 months last year. Extended cab, no carpet, no rear seat.
Its usual load is 1 guy and 600lbs of equipment in the bed. Cruise set on 82 most it averaged 20 on the interstate hand calculated. It honestly suprised me because I'm not light footed when it's the company card buying gas.

Where would you like me to begin?

For starters it’s slow to shift, particularly on downshifts. Then it wants to upshift too soon. Constantly trying to get into a taller gear too soon when I’m calling for acceleration. This effectively neuters the engine because it takes a fucking act of Congress to get full power acceleration in lower gears. Truck ends up feeling flat footed all the time.

The manual mode is utter trash and shifts on its own program with only a limit to the top gear selected. Manually selected shifts happen sloooooooooowwwwwwwlllllllyyyyyyy.

Tow-haul mode helps make it more tolerable but still not perfect, and needing to activate tow-haul just to get acceptable performance is pretty annoying.

In 2007 when the truck came out it was the best transmission you could get in a 1/2 ton. That ship sailed a long long time ago.

Same can be said for the 3UR-FE. Class leading in 2007, but times change.

The only people buying the current Tundra are Toyota fan bois, who are too blind or biased to acknowledge the antiquity of the current Tundra, and troglodytes who want Stone Age technology because they hate new things. The Tundra may be more reliable, but judging by the tiny number of users here that have a truck much older than 5 years old I’d say it’s a non issue for most. You guys are talking up a benefit: long term reliability; that virtually none of you will end up utilizing. Unless you are the 2nd or 3rd owner, or a cheap ass like me who keeps the truck long term.

So pretty much all of you guys with a Tundra still under warranty who will trade out before or shortly after it expires (most of you in this thread) have roughly zero credibility making the only argument for a 2021 Tundra. Reliability is indeed nice, but if you get a new truck every 3-4 years and you pay the premium for a Tundra with Stone Age tech, a choppy ride, bad fuel economy, no towing capacity unless you pay to put a auxiliary transmission cooler on, and mid pack power you’re kind of making a questionable decision.

As much as I like Toyota if I were most of you guys and content to have truck payment and be under warranty all the time, I’d probably be driving a new F150 3.5EB or GMC Sierra with the 6.2L on a rinse and repeat cycle every 4 years or so taking advantage of the normal big discounts and financing deals. If I gotta have a payment it might as well be on something nice to drive and both of those options currently hand a 2021 Tundra it’s ass in the enjoyable to drive department.

So it works just like the Tacomas....thats funny because I hear from guys with Tundras all the time that talk about the trash transmission in the Tacoma. (I currently own a Tacoma and am looking at buying the
new Tundra for hauling and towing)

I’m just gonna leave this little
Gem here for the GM fan bois. To thinks that some dimwit bought it despite the stickers. And his only concern is the bed to cab body lines hence it being in the collision center….

I haven’t driven a current Taco with the 6 speed, but generally Toyota/Lexus have a habit of programming transmissions for fuel economy above all else.

Suffice to say I am not a big fan of that programming strategy as a default. If they want to offer an Eco mode for saving fuel at my discretion I can just ignore that function. Don’t foist it on me at all times and make me drive around it, or deactivate it.

Was going to point that out as well.

Direct injection and a higher compression ratio to go with it. Also often overlooked is the improvements in cylinder heads over time. If you can make a head flow more air in and out, you can make more power.

Toyota has had 14 years with the 5.7L and revised the intake and exhaust ports….. never.

Nissan has a similar issue with the 7AT they have been using for a while. On low-torque engines, like the VQ37 (G37 and EX35) the 7AT is annoying, doesn't seem matched to those low-torque, high revving VQ37 3.7 V6.

However, the 7AT in the Titan and twin turbo Q50 and Q60 cars is a much better match, those vehicles have the torque to cover for early upshifts, reluctant downshifts.

I suppose that's the real issue for the Tacoma, I have heard the 3.5 is relatively low-torque, so if the trans shifts too early, it brings down the entire driving experience. Just a guess.....

Seriously, Toyota drive mode is nothing but a paddle commander. Eco is 80% full throttle, normal is 100% full throttle, and sport is 100% @ 80% throttle…

Sounds like you have us all figured out, lol.

I can only speak for myself, but getting my Platinum for about $15k less than Ford wanted for theirs had a lot to do with my decision. I really liked the F150, but not as much as they did.

And reliability is not just about going 300k miles in a truck. It's also about spending my time fishing instead of going back and forth to the service department.

You seem mad. Are you angry at us? :)

You have had your truck for all of 3 years, and already modified because it lacked adequate power for your needs or wants. That kind of says it all.

How long did you have your last truck? Curious if you’re a long term owner or a rinse and repeat guy? Not judging either way, your money your choice.

I will point out that if you wanted a faster truck a GM 6.2 with a blower would be the more effective route just due to the huge aftermarket.

Angry no. More amused than anything else. There is a lot of cognitive dissonance in automotive forums where owners/fans of a certain vehicle convince themselves in an echo chamber that not only was their choice the best, but that those who chose other vehicles will literally be stranded on the side of the road or spend every waking hour in the shop.

Unless you buy something made in Britain or Italy being stranded or in the shop perpetually are highly unlikely for the first owner of any vehicles sold today in North America.

I wouldn't mind owning a domestic truck if the service departments were better. But, if you own a $60K vehicle and take it to a place that sees Escorts, Focuses, Neons, Cavaliers, Cobalts, all the time it's gonna suck.
I've had troublesome cars before, but the dealers treated their customers really well (German car) so it wasn't a big deal.
