What's the best head unit out there?

I put in my Dasaita yesterday.
    1643564826755.jpg
This is where I drilled out the factory bracket to mount to the Dasaita, and a pair of M4x8mm screws are required to connect the two. I also filed down the upper nib so the bracket would fit flush against the chassis of the radio. There's a grid of vent holes on the side of the radio, and you should be able to see the top row through the upper stock mounting hole on the bracket just as a reference for the position, or just align the "LH" and "RH" lettering to be parallel with the body of the head unit.

Looks very similar hardware like the Dasaita and Joying units. Probably the same hardware but different software. I would base it on others experience with the user interface and support.

I’ve had no real issues with my Dasaita to comment on the support.

Do all years need to be drilled for the Dasaita unit? Here is a video of a guy installing the Dasiata in a 2010 tundra. He didn't drill anything or mention drilling. What am I missing?

Compared to the Pioneer HU and PAC steering wheel controls I tried to put in, this installation is rather simple. I got the canbus adapter for the JBL system, and it plugs into two of the original HU plugs directly, then that plug goes into the back of the HU. The GPS antenna and microphone can be run together up to the A-pillar and front driver's corner of the dash. The 34mmx24mm USB jack for Toyota fits the lower HVAC controls perfectly. I think I will buy two more to fill the emtpy holes I have.

I've seen some people post about having difficulty with the steering wheel controls, but with this particular unit you can go into the settings and they have you hold down the button you want to program, then tell the HU what you want it to do, so it wasn't a problem at all.

The stock radio has a bracket on each side so that it can be bolted into the dash which helps support the weight of those units. In the video you posted, the creator had an aftermarket head unit already and had decided to discard those brackets entirely. That's an option, but I'll take the extra metal personally.

If you still have the stock HU, that video is a horrible guide and should be 100% ignored in favor of a more complete approach that gives you access to the mounting screws.

Gotcha. So with the factory metal brackets, the radio is more secure? Without them, it will work, but may have a little play or might sag over time?

Yeah the brackets will make things more secure I suspect, and without them the junction of the HVAC panel and the radio itself might be able to move a little bit.

I don’t recall the instructions for my Dasaita mentioning anything about the brackets. But I could have overlooked them. I mean, what man uses directions, right? Unless the install goes wrong!

But I did the install like the video and my radio and AC controls all seem very well supported.

Haha. I may have been stretching there. I honestly don’t recall but I know I didn’t use any brackets.

I recommend the Alpine 650 its a great shallow mount with pretty dang good mini DSP function. Also can get it with or with out a piggy back amp (running piggy back amp will make it a full size depth mount) also has Apple Carplay and Android auto.

This is the unit I just got my daughter for Christmas. Definitely took me by surprise when I opened it. Not use to those shallow units. I come from the CD era!

these are the components I used in my Tundra. the head unit has subwoofer RCA outputs and when activated it cuts the lows from the factory speakers and the sound is awesome. It wont rattle the doors off but 500% better bass.

Alpine HU- has Apple carplay and Android auto... NO CD player..

So I’ll throw something out here.

I upgraded my limited to a kenwood and it was great. But the glare was awful since the screen can’t be tilted. And I hate to say it, but the 7” screen was just too small to easily reach. My kenwood failed exactly a week after the warranty went out, it kenwood is replacing it for me anyway. This was January 14 when it failed.

I’m still waiting for a replacement unit, and they said it could be another 45-70 days.
So I’m looking to go with a 9” Sony simply so I can tilt it so the screen doesn’t have so much glare lol.

Just got the new Sony 8100 installed.
Capacitive screen, and a lower resolution, but I can actually read the thing without leaning forward.

My JVC just went out and when I click the reset button it just flashes, then, it goes back off. Do you, or anyone else, have opinions on one that kind of peeks over the dash a little? Also I want one that has good audio quality, as well as an equalizer in it like the JVC or Kenwood.

Ive been very happy with my Sony that I posted in the comment above yours. Sound quality is great, radio is a bit slow for animations between menu's and the screen isnt HD but for its price point being a 8.9" you cant beat it.

If you can be patient (shipping directly from China wait approx 2 months) here’s my recommendation it is a really solid unit. Price/features/quality is unbeatable in comparison to the $1000 plus domestic units available here.

To get carplay to work w/ this unit you'll need to download the AutoKit app to the head unit and purchase a carplay adapter, I used (which works wired and wireless): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1F11GP?ie=UTF8

Either Dasaita or Joying or maybe a few other brands. They seem to have similar hardware so it comes down to the OS and support. They’re all Chinese Android based systems.
