Ramps, jackstands, or…….?

After their last stand fiasco, not interested.

 

What last stand?

 

Go with the Rhinos. I’ve got them and love them. They don’t slip when you’re driving up onto them. Plus, you can often find them for the same price ($59.99) and they’re double the weight capacity of the HF ramps.

 

Their cheaper jack stands had a safety issue where the pawl would lose grip and allow the jack stand to drop without warning. There was a big recall on all of their cheap 3-ton and some of the 6-ton units. They swapped them out for free if you brought them into the store. The new units are quite beefy though. I use their 12-ton stands.

I have a couple of floor jacks and some jack stands, but for oil changes and messing with the cat shield and skid I just use my old set of Rhino Ramps. They aren't the newer heavier duty model but still work fine. It's crazy that these Tundras have less room to work underneath than my old gen 2 Tacoma. I didn't need to raise it at all to do this kind of work. I probably could do the Tundra oil change without lifting except for needing to remove the front TRD skid plate. If you don't have one of those you can probably do oil without ramps.

 

This. I went to HF to replace my older HF ramps (Tundra over weight capacity) and didn't like my options. Home Depot was right there and the Rhino's were on sale. They are very nice and I recommend them.

 

Years ago I had a Contour SVT and it sat pretty low, didn't like pulling the jack and stands out for an oil change so I used some 2x10 I had and made some ramps, I cut 4 pieces for each side with a 45° leading edge. Bottom was about 3ft, middle was 2ft, top was 1ft and a backer about 6in long and screwed them all together. They worked great and fit under the body. Best part is it was free because I had everything I needed. That car has been gone for a long time but I still use those ramps for quick jobs.

 

I have those. I love 'em. Never had Rhino ramps though, so I can't make a comparison.

 

They had a recall on three models of their "Pittsburgh" brand jack stands, manufactured between 2013 and 2019. I'm pretty sure I own a set of the recalled stands. LOL

 

I have that same set up drain pan, HD bucket, HF ramps my creeper is a little older
The 5 gal bucket makes this job so much easier and cleaner got the tip off here

 

Thanks guys. I think I'll definitely be happy with my rhinos. Couldn't find them in sale anywhere nearby so just ended up ordering them through Lowe's. Pick up on Friday. Got my aftermarket eBay skid waiting for the install. Got all the hardware on it, just now waiting for the rhinos. Plus future oil changes looks like it'll be a breeze. I'm the back of my head, I've always been a bit skeptical about them breaking while under the truck(I'm kinda a big guy) so while the thought of being thinner is nice, I'd rather go about it a different way

What size jack stands (3, 6, 12 ton) would you guys recommend I look at purchasing before I need to either rotate or swap all seasons for winter tires again?
We have a stock MY23 SR5 TRD Sport 4X4.
Last week I was stuck using the bottle jack that comes with the truck and an 8 ton bottle jack that I have for our travel trailer. I never put my body underneath the truck while swapping the tires.

I’m also considering getting a set of those Rhino ramps before my next oil change. For now I’m just running the front tires up over a couple of 2X6 to gain a bit of height and crawling under their.

I seem to love to do things the hard way.
Appreciate any advice.

 

I use 6ton up front under the frame and 3ton in the rear under the axle. If I needed the rear suspension to droop, I'd use 6ton under the frame. I feel more comfortable with the 6ton for taller support.

 

I've used Rhino ramps for every oil change on my 2018 (9 times so far). For me personally, these are the only way to go, no need to find jacking points and slide axle stands into position and lower on to them.

With the ramps, slide them up to the tire, line them up and carefully run up the ramps until the front tires settle in to the recess. Put in Park, set the parking brake and you are totally safe.

Also, being reinforced plastic, they are light in weight and easy to move around. I got the heaviest model (supposed to support way more than the front of the Tundra weighs).

Would I really need the taller support of a 6 ton if I’m just changing tires?

 

I misspoke when I stated that I was considering them. I’m sold on them. I’ve just been watching for them to go on sale up here in the Great White North.

 

Probably not but for a few more dollars I’d go with the 6 then you have them if needed to do repairs under the truck

I hate all jack stands especially putting these beasts on them

 

Would you trust an 8 ton bottle jack more than a 6 ton jack stand?

I’m seriously a newb here.

 

I also go to 4 low going up the ramps. Way easier to control the forward movement.

 

No jack stands are safer just for the fact they have wider base

I ended up getting the Rhino's. Used them a few times already but I still use my Badlands jack and 3 ton jacks as extra safety. They are great ramps but I'm going to be building my own ramps out of wood and will sell or giveaway my Rhino's.

 

I have Quick Jack 5000 series which are unfortunately not robust enough for the Tundra's weight. Worked great for my Taco when I had it.

Anyone use the 7000 series? Thinking of upgrading.

7000TLX on my F30 335i, F25 X3 35i, and 2008 Legacy GT. I purchased the 7000TLX so it could handle the weight of a full size SUV or 1/2 ton pickup when we eventually purchase one.

The frames for the 7000TLX are heavy. The only inconvenient part is setting it up and putting it away. But if you have a project where you think you might need to work on the car at different heights to access stuff, it's much better than jack stands. It's also much better if you're working on more than 1 car during the day because you can quickly lift and lower each vehicle. Since getting them, I haven't gone back to jack stands.

I can see the advantage of using them being lessened on a pickup compared to a car/smaller SUV because the underside has more jack points/is more exposed.
