I've contacted them twice in the past several months and as of today I have not received a response.

any chance you could verify/identify which one of the 3/8" id barbs off the cooler assembly is the cool return to the transmission? Just asking for myself :anonymous:

Here are some diagrams that should help you identify the flow and what hoses go where on that cooler assy. For what it's worth, if you are going to get an air cooled cooler as a supplement I would suggest 2 ways to hook it up.
    1. If you live in an environment where it's not super cold for several months out of the year, bypass the radiator cooler and the secondary cooler/warmer. This will allow the fluid to stay cooler than the radiator temperature which is what I do in my shop. If you are using a decent sized stacked plate air cooler then you shouldn't have any temps over 200 degrees, unless the thermostatic bypass valve fails. We usually bypass those as well but I need to see how this is mounted and connected to the transmission. Most of the Dodge and GM ones have them a foot or so away from the transmission and have replaceable parts so it's easy for us to upgrade the parts or remove the guts completely.
    2. Remove the small cooler assembly and close the loop with the antifreeze lines. If you've ever had an old school heater core go bad you will know what I'm talking about, lol. Just get a coupler to connect the hoses together. That way you are only going to connect the transmission cooler lines to the air cooler. This setup is going to be similar to the OE minus the antifreeze running through it. It's not going to be as efficient as a standalone cooler like my #1 and is sort of a contradictory setup because the ATF is only going to be as cool as what the radiator temperature is. If the engine is running hot then your fluid will also be running hot. I've recently acquired the Banks iDash and have already noticed in daily driving that once up to temperature the transmission fluid temp will get up to 205-209 degrees and not cool down even with my coolant temp at 196 degrees. I can only imagine what it's going to look like when summer gets here and we start having 115 degree days

After weeks of time and hours of investigation, study and reading I have determined my selected course of solution to my Gen3 Transmission Cooler upgrade. I will post up once I have completed the install, and have completed a SGII evaluation of the results. Subsequent posts will include product information and install details. Results will include cooling under normal and towing use. I'm sure some won't agree with my solution. Hopefully they will have verifiable and "documented" solutions specifically for
the Gen3 - which we would all like to have seen before now! Don't expect my update post(s) soon - I am waiting on parts delivery, install and testing.

Got it. Hopefully my solution will yield positive results. Will know in the up coming tow season.

Thanks for that post and information identifying the radiator cold return line to the transmission. I plan on going with a Derale unit.

I recently bought a Derale unit to supplement the stock set up. DER-13870 to be specific. Issue is that’s it’s a fatty and there’s really no place to bolt it on under the truck. If it’s going somewhere it’s probably upfront behind the grill.

I am using a non-fan unit (stacked plate 32000 btu) mounted behind the grill. I believe we will all find a solution that allows us to feel comfortable with our transmission oil temps.

That kit is quite expensive in the USA. The only part easily utilized on the Tundra is the the cooler brick alone, and something of similar size, or even larger, could be sourced for significantly less.

Wow! I looked that choice up and it does produce some heat reducing BTU! If that does not cool it off then there is a major problem. Post up some install pics and results - presume you have a SGII/SGIII or equal to measure results with. GL.

All the ancillary kit parts are specific to the IS 500. They could possibly work well enough, or be modified to function well enough to install… but not plug and play.

I did purchase the Banks Power Datamonster to keep an eye on the transmission temp levels. I’ll post some pics of that install too

UPDATE #1: received Derale 13402 and completed cardboard mock-up for brackets - measure 3 times so you don't f-up the fab. Should be able to install without removal of front grill (big plus). Will need extra transmission fluid hose as the kit does not provide enough. Purchased Lubegard Platinum as fluid for additional capacity (10 oz) of the cooler. You use 1 oz LG per quart of AFT and there are 11.7 qts in the oem system so the additional added cooler volume will be entirely LG. Lines (3/8 id) take .75 oz fluid per foot of hose and I will use WS ATF for that volume. You do not over fill the volume of the system - i.e. you only add in the additional capacity the cooler and line provide. If you are not increasing the capacity of the system the only way you should add LG would be to remove an equal amount of volume desired to be added - but not exceed 1 oz of LG per qt of WS ATF removed. Next up trip to metal shop for bracket materials. Install after that - will post pics/dimensions of brackets.

I am aware of potential issue - I had similar concerns with my Gen3 Taco - which uses Toyota WS AFT when I added an additional cooler. After doing much research and conversations with @Gearcruncher (on the Tacoma World) I went with Lubegard Platinum. No issues after 65K miles. But I will check with him specifically about our Tundras as see what he says.

Possibly. He may have a different answer since we are 10spd. I have time - and no hurry, and for sure Toyota WS ATF is easily accessible if that turns out to be the case. Will let you know what he says.

    @ryanwgregg

Edit: Lubegard was contacted with the specific question as to use of their Platinum product as an additive to Toyota WS ATF used in our Tundras with 10 speed transmission. Their response is below. Additionally, if you are familiar with Tacoma World Forum you will know Gearcrucher. He is the resident transmission expert (yep that is his full time job) and is the best source of independent transmission knowledge you can find. Check him out on TW if you have questions or simply want to know the truth about servicing your transmission.

    Reply:

Lubegard Platinum is fully compatible with Toyota WS ATF in the Tundra10-speed transmission. The treat rate is one ounce of Lubegard to every quart of WS.

Please let me know if I can do anything else.

    No argument here.

I find it interesting that Toyota even states in our Gen3 Owner's Manual that we should also only use Toyota Motor Oil. I'm 100% positive Toyota does not manufacture their own motor oil. They may have an "additive" they have added to motor oil to make it "Toyota" but it is manufactured by a source other than Toyota. I use Mobile 1 for my Tundra so I guess I have already gone down the path of no return!

I always use Toyota products for things like oil filters, air filters, AFT when doing fluid drain/fill, and other critical parts - I guess I simply question their constant drink our "Kool Aide" fear tactic.

Both TGMO and WS ATF are manufactured by ExxonMobil for Toyota…

Toyota reformulated their TGMO because too much moly in forced induction engines can cause pre-detonation…

    Use be 500+ and now’s it’s closer to 100…
