Hey guys, is this frame good or has it been undercoated to hide rust? Thanks

The rear diff is going to spring a leak any day now, and the transmission crossmember looks fucked. The spare tire is installed upside down, so it could collect water, and gives a pretty accurate idea of what you can expect to find inside the framerails if you had a borescope/snake cam. I wouldn't personally buy that truck. It's definitely been coated. But it definitely had rust before it was coated.

To boot, the rear brakes are likely fucked, or braking as a whole. Looking at how much slack is in that parking brake cable, I'm sure they're soft, and I suspect they can't be dialed in. If this truck isn't going for $6k or less, I wouldn't buy it.

One other thought: It's possible this frame was replaced. Because the longer rails and a few other spots - like the "X" shaped crossmember over the spare tire - don't show the same amount of corrosion as the rear diff, and a few other bolt-on parts. Still ... even if replaced, I wouldn't buy it. But if it was replaced, it should show up in the service history at the Toyota Owners website, if you setup an account and plug in the VIN.

There’s so much rust on the backing plates, the coating has already flaked off in areas on the passenger rear

I'd be pretty suspicious given how terrible the other parts look. I would look up the history of it for sure and see if its been replaced...because everything else metal that hasn't been coated looks awful, if the frame is just as bad, but under the paint, run away

Lots of black cover-up spray of some kind -- you can see the overspray. The body rust looks pretty bad. I wouldn't buy it.

The leaf spring looked like it was sprayed so I was wondering. Thanks for your responses everybody.

That spare tire is a dead giveaway!

and also these brackets have deep delaminating rust. I would steer well clear of that truck.

That transfer case skid plate is atrocious. 3 different pipes on the exhaust, and that exhaust hanger looks one good bump away from snapping. Not the worst truck we've seen, but pretty close.
