I have an 06 Tundra RWD SR5 4DR that I bought recently, and when I start my truck from cold, there's a high pitch noise (almost a like your ears are ringing) that lasts for about 30 sec - 1 min after starting, and then stops almost like it's warming up and stops when it's warm? Any ideas on what's causing this? Cause for immediate concern?

    I appreciate any help,

    Thanks!

When was the last time the belts, water pump, and other goodies were changed?

That is the obvious question. For the not so obvious questions someone will be along shortly with more experience on the V8?

The timing belt was changed less than 5k miles ago. The serpentine belt however, I do not know when or if that has been changed recently. Same for the water pump, etc. I will have to double check the carfax from when I bought it, but I don't remember seeing anything about those parts being changed..
There is also a vibration sound when I have the A/C on, that becomes way less pronounced when I turn off the A/C. The A/C blows cold and works fine, but there is a vibration noise that engages when I turn it on. Could be related? Serpentine belt?
I am new to learning about the workings of my car, and have been learning how to fix things in order to save money, I have good abilities of tool usage, and feel confident I can learn most repairs.
The truck drives GREAT, but I am just trying to get all the kinks worked out to make it last me a long time.. It has 166K on the odometer.

    Good!
Not good. Toyota reccomends replacement at 90K intervals for the water pump. The other goodies are changed out of precaution. You are already there, and if parts are on hand... may as well change them out also.
This question is out of my league. I would imagine that it is belt related, but I dont have a V8. I am in the same boat as you. Learning my way around repairs.

Is it a "ring" like the title says or more of a squeal?

If it’s a high pitched noise, I’d bet it’s your air injection pump. You can either have that repaired for $2K or install the bypass (see link below) for around $200. If this, and you go the bypass route (most everyone does), soak the nuts for a few days before installing the plates. If one of the four nuts breaks off, you’re up a creek. There’s a detailed YouTube video of a guy and his dad doing the bypass and showing every step - it’s really easy.

    https://hewitt-tech.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=94

If it’s a squeal, I’d bet your serpentine belt, an idler, pulley or water pump. I’ve seen some people just replace the timing belt at 100K miles without doing the idler/pulleys or water pump - bad move. You can take off the serpentine belt and spin the pulleys to see if they’re bad (YouTube).

It is a high pitched noise like ears ringing. And then will stop after about 30 seconds, with a sound like a pressure releasing with a little hiss at the end.

Thanks @Tundra2! This place is great!

Thanks @Bulldog_tundra ! What does the bypass do? I'm thinking you are right about it being the air pump.

I assume this is the SAI pump, based on other stuff I've read, a sound clip would really help. If you can shoot one on your phone, then go to www.imgur.com you can upload with sound and link it here for everyone to hear.

Mine hasn't died yet. Isn't there also an inline filter you can throw on one of the lines to the pump to prolong and/or extend the life of the pump? I can't seem to find a write-up about it here.

Does this sound indicate a problem or is it supposed to sound like that?

It'd be worth checking. If it sounds like a shop vac its hooked up to a turbo under your hood, it's the pump, and it may be on its way out.

EDIT: Looks like we submitted our replies at the same second! So ... JINX!

The SAI Bypass kit from Hewitt fixed my problem. Going on almost 4 years now.

SAI pump is around $500 for the pump no matter how you slice it. Unless you buy it from the company that makes it, then it's half that price. Problem is, I forgot what company made it, someone mentioned it before, it sounded plausible, but then I couldn't find the post to verify it.

May want to replace the starter with Denso cold weather starter while you're in there. You shouldn't need to peek under that intake for 15-20 years if you do.

This forum is littered with people who continued to get codes after using the Hewitt kit and other kits as well. Some due to improper install (not installing blockoff platest seems to be a big one). Some because of ECU bug (cold start). Some we don't know why.
