My MIL gifted me her Uncles Ruger Redhawk when I was still just dating her daughter. Praying my grandkids (Boys 2 &4) are no longer in CA when the time comes for me to turn over some firearms.

My brother, who also drives has to put in for time off like this. We only get together every few years because I can't commit to plans that far out.

As to the divorce talk earlier, I married my first wife in 1988, and divorced in 1994.
My son was 4 and my daughter was not even a year old.
It is what it is, I left the house with a waterbed and 19" TV...

But the kids were always educated about firearms at a young age.
They would help me clean guns when they were little.
Although guns were always kept in a safe unless I was carrying one..

The first time my son shot a gun was in Rusk Texas, I'm going to guess 13 or 14.



The girlfriend at the time had family there we would often visit.
They live way out in the country..
Her brother, a Marine vet, gathered the older kids and asked if they wanted to shoot.
He had made a section of his property into a range.
I think it was a 22 rifle, a safe and controlled environment, shooting at cans, and everyone had a good time.

I never told him not to tell Mom, I never did that, although she did.
So she calls me and is bitching about having the kids around firearms, and her cop friend said they were too young.
I told her the best thing to do with kids is educate them about firearms.
Take the mystery out of them, let them know how dangerous and destructive they can be...

In the end, the problem wasn't that he shot a gun, her problem was that she wasn't in control.
Her control issues are one of the many reasons we divorced..
She never wanted a firearm in the house, I didn't start buying them until the divorce.

Years later she has her own LTC, carry permit, and a crappy Taurus pistol.
I doubt she ever carries it, but it's none of my business..
We always got along for the kids, for the most part.
My first wife gets along with my wife now.

 

I am a huge advocate for guns being locked in a safe at all times unless on your persons. Well done with all this. Also it’s scary to me how many untrained people will carry a gun to defend themselves yet don’t have the discipline to be affective if SHTF

Opening dove day is a state holiday there! I do agree they are barn birds and they are fun, but I would rather hunt others. That said, I took those holidays and walked the leases myself LOL.

I have a ton of dove memories, but my most prominent one from Texas is getting to the bird. Dont wait or something there will beat you to it... Ants, skunks snakes and other birds love dove season lol

 

I never did get into deer hunting, I just hunted birds for a few years.
That bacon-wrapped dove breast with a slice of jalapeno and a little cheese was awesome.
Sometimes we would bread and fry them.



My favorite bird hunting was quail with my friend's bird dogs, watching those dogs work was something to see.
But fire ants wiped out a lot of the quail in the areas we went to back then.
My kids were small then and I didn't think they would eat quail, but they loved 'em..

He took me pheasant hunting in Iowa one year.
It was the coldest and smelliest experience of my life, 3 feet of snow and we hunted around pig farms..
It was a great time, I'll never forget it.

I went turkey hunting a few times and took more shots with a camera than a gun..

There’s the problem. Half of people have below average intelligence, yet almost nobody thinks they’re in the bottom half. Think about how many idiots you know. How many of them believe they’re idiots? They usually believe the opposite in my experience.
Those are the guys that end up shooting a bystander or some kid in their bedroom because they overestimate their capabilities.

After recent discussions here about beer and how I perceive IPAs to be nasty, only to be told I was wrong, I've decided to conduct an experiment for, you know, science and stuff. While at the grocery store today I picked this up. I will make myself consume it tonight and most likely confirm that I was right all along.

 

Bro please come drink a proper IPA with me.

Should probably post this in the food thread but it might give someone Mom's Day ideas.

Asked Mom what she wanted for Mother's Day, and she said 'cook for me'.
The parents are in their 80s so there isn't much cooking going on over there.
I made 2 dinners for the parents today to take over tomorrow.
Cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes, first time I made them.
Pork chops with roasted small potatoes and french green beans.
Taking one of those big salads over as well..
Put them in meal planning containers to make things easy for them.



Made enough of the pork chop dinner for the wife and I tonight.
Made enough cabbage rolls and we will have them tomorrow.
They probably taste better sitting in the fridge overnight anyway.

Taking it tomorrow because they have plans Sunday..

So if you're wondering what to get Mom for Mom's day, cook a dinner or 2 for her..
