Nice! Looks like the same sort of smooth hardtop trifold design of the Exstang Xceed I just put on mine. So far mine’s been good. I got it as a customer take off from a canopy shop for $450. Feeling pretty good about it since it was like new, although it did take a trip to Lowe’s and $5 for a few missing bolts.

I really like the intermediate positions that retracts give you, for instance when hauling tall gas cans for the mowers. Holds them upright up against the tailgate and ventilates the bed. And the intermediate positions come in handy in many other ways.

Seems like the main difference between PE and Retrax is that the PEs have a spring loaded retract mechanism and instead of the handle there is a strap that is connected to the latch mechanism. So once the cover is retracted you pull the strap which snaps the latch over so the cover will then latch every 12" or so as you pull it with the strap. Just stop in the position you want. Or as the cover is retracting you can just pull the strap to stop it and lock it. Kind of nice to be able to do this without having to walk along with the cover. But it accomplishes the same thing, just a slightly different way. Seems almost like 6 to one half dozen to the other.

Question for anyone with the Bakflip X4S. Do you think the Ride 88 bike rack pictured below will be usable with the X4S when its rolled up? Ride 88 sells a tension bar mount for the their racks that I could mount far enough back to leave enough space, but I'd much rather get the ones that mount directly to the Toyota bed rails (as pictured). Just not sure there will be enough space for the rolled up tonneau between the top of the rack and the back of the cab.

I don’t think it will work for you friend. The angle of the pictures rack is too steep. I’ll send you a photo of it rolled up for reference.

*edit* it’s about 9” from the bulkhead.

MaiToyTunCap, I see you live in MN, I too live in the Midwest and am curious how the BAK X4s has been to operate in the winter? It seems like the perfect cover for me however I have heard mixed reviews regarding trying to roll it up in the winter. Thank you in advance.

I have the Bakflip MX4 and love it. Granted, it is my 3rd one from Bakflip. 1st one had some manufacturing defects and they replaced the lid only. 2nd one leaked in the middle of my bed and one of the panels wasn't sealed well so water got inside of it. Leaked in the front corners a lot more than the 1st one too. They ended up sending me a whole new full kit and this one seems to be made better. I took my time installing and used butyl up in the front corners and it might get a few drops of water which I am fine with. Tailgate corners, not a big deal for me since those leak a little. These are not 100% waterproof.

Hello. I'm not sure how weight my opinion has on this matter. This is my first truck so every mod that I'm adding is my first and only ever. I did a lot of research and originally was going to go with the RetraxPro XR. Being that I have a crewmax and only have a 5'5" bed, loosing another 11" wasn't ideal. Radco tried to pitch some products that I just wasn't happy with. I ended going with this one based on reviews I read and how people were happy with it.

Honestly, I called Radco to ask them to order it and they said they no longer carry it due to the problems and complaints they got. I went against their words and my gut feeling and got this cover anyways from realtruck.com.

Man... I'm definitely not disappointed. Super easy to install, looks amazing, rolls up easily with one hand, no affect from the cold or ice. I truly have nothing bad to say. It's a good looking cover and it functions as advertised.

    Good day.

I love the idea of that rack but mountain bikes are seven feet long now!

    Lots of stuff!
A possible option to have a cover and a bike rack is a cover like the Diamondback and them you can mount a rack on top of that for the bikes they will hang over the back a little but it makes a pretty solid option for carrying bikes.

Do you have any details on the mods you did to the MX4? Specifically the butyl addition? Appreciate pictures if practical?
    Thanks

I originally planned on a Retrax Pro XR but I found a Retrax One XR on Craigs for $500. The difference between the 2 is the Pro is aluminum and the One is polycarbonate.

I was skeptical on the price but decided to take a look since it was close by. The owner of the shop buys scratch/dent and returned car parts. Upon inspection I noticed the underside of the box that the cover rolls into was indeed dented but since you won’t see it installed I ended up buying it for a fraction of the price.

The install was pretty straight forward. The polycarbonate cover looks great but I don’t see it having the longevity or durability of the aluminum cover….not even close. 096BD998-45DC-4D07-A0EE-0A6ECFE9A3A4.jpg

Thanks a lot guys, I’ve spent a good length of my day and life sorting thru all 42 pages….

    I still don’t know what cover I want… lol

I was thinking OEM Toyota or RC, maybe a roll up. I’ll spend between 500 to 1500 if it really is justified.

I’ll looking for esthetics, fit and finish quality security and weather protection…

Does your cover not have drains for the rails towards the tailgate? I am trying to figure out where to drain those too on mine.

Don't forget ease of use and utility. While the OEM cover (and Bakflips) meet all the requirements you list below they are not nearly as convenient to use as a retract... or I guess also a roll up. I am still adjusting to my OEM cover having come from a retract on my last truck. Not sure I will keep it long term.

I really want either the roll up Bakflip or the retrax. The flushness of both and aluminum are great. The retrax doesnt block the back window. The bakflip doesnt block the bed. grrrr.

Does anybody know if bakflip can be used with cross bars like retrax? (also, i'll start sorting through, it's likely been asked)

Peragon retractable seem solid. Just wondering how much weight they can support up top?

I’m in the same boat. Also wondering if the roll up backflip can have stuff tied down up against it (think moving a refrigerator)?

I REALLY want to like this cover, but I can’t get over how it would open if you have stuff in the bed that slides up by the cab? I don’t want to climb into the bed under the cover every time something gets back there making the cover unable to open….

I wonder about that too. Also, any snow/water that is on the cover will always go into the bed when you open it.

I hadn't seen those Peragons before. Interesting. They also claim to do custom colors which would be cool. Imagine a Lunar Rock tonneau cover. :) But, unfortunately, they don't seem to be able to lock in any intermediate positions. At least not in the videos I watched. That is one of the real benefits of the canister type.

I had the BAK X2 on my 08 for many years, great cover! I now have the Bak X4S on the ‘23 and it is even better than the previous X2. I like it doesnt block the window when rolled up, but note that it does take some room if your loading anything above the bed rails. In my case dirt bikes. I use a cut piece of pallet wood in between the front wheel and the front of the bed to give me clearance. It’s worked for me for many years. Im designing and building something for the bikes that more of a rack but going to take some time to get that done. You can kind of see how it works in this picture.

Added a couple more pictures, had to do the same thing on my 08 6.5 bed and BAK X2 but it never failed.

@Paul Moll - Sorry for the late response. Just barely seeing your question... I put the butyl in the front corners. I can snap pics on where. However today it is raining again and water is dripping from the joints of the panels. I think water is getting under it from the bed sides and running along the rubber joints.... I think. I hope the panels aren't filling with water again. I will inspect further when I am able.

Installed my Bak XS4 today before the snow- had a bakflip mx4 on the last tundra and decided to go for something different since I didn’t like how it would cover the read window. I’m a fan so far!

If you live in an area with snow and ice don’t get a retractable cover.

I have a nearly brand new Retrax Pro MX for short bed going up for sale soon. Perfect condition, just not the right application for long winter months.
