Ok, heard back from the dealer and they are scheduling a Toyota tech to come out and look at my truck. They seem to think that the gas engine is not working correctly in conjunction with the battery. Can anyone explain in simple terms how they work together, and when they work together, speeds, etc? I’m having a hard time getting any explanation on this. Thanks!

75MPH, 35" tires an a 3" lift, that milage sounds correct. I went up 1 size in my tire over stock, (.5" taller and .5" wider) and kissed away 3 MPG . Tire weight / lift/speed is MPG killers

For those that mentioned 35” tires were after market, etc, I bought the truck at a dealer off the showroom floor with these tires and the lift. I’m still waiting to hear when a tech will be this way…

The tires are still aftermarket. The truck did not roll off the factory line with that setup. The dealer added it at a handsome markup. The stated EPA numbers are for factory tires, which I believe with 18” wheels are 265/70R18 in SL load rating. Those tires weigh 39-43 lb.

35s on the other hand, do not come in SL load rating; most of them are E load, and they weigh 65-75 lb each. That’s an additional weight of 22 to 36 lbs per corner depending on whether you’re running ATs or MTs. HUGE difference.

On top of rolling on super heavy tires, if you idle for extended periods, you’re factoring in an MPG of 0.

    ^ this

load E are stupid heavy and you have to pay to play , lifting reduces MPG as well by aerodynamic reductions

You paid the dealer to put those tires on the truck (they just did it before you bought it), take a look at your invoice on the sale and I'm guessing they marked up the lift and tires somewhere around 8k-12k range. Lifts and bigger tires murder your mileage, just as @Breathing Borla said you've got to pay to play for the look of bigger tires and a lift. I found a set of TRD Pro wheel take offs and switched the mildpeaks to a 265/70/18 Toyo AT3's in a standard P load range(swapped to the Pro rims and mild peaks at 240 miles and switched to Toyos at about 5500 miles). I think overall I maybe went down a pound or two per corner with the 18" BBS pro wheels being a little lighter and the Toyo tire being a little heavier. Haven't had a chance to pull a wheel off and weigh it compared to the 20's that are still there collecting dust, but rough numbers based on info found here on stock wheel weight when I did the math told me I should have been really close to the same or lighter. My mileage stayed the same as before new tires because I decreased to a skinnier tire 265 vs 285 and stuck with a P rated tire. As @Terndrerrr said even very small changes will nuke your mileage. If you want better mileage swap to a set of takeoffs that are stock in size and see what happens, can always throw the 35's back on whenever you want.

They have to put some warnings out there because you'll have people that want those deep dish wheels that stick 5" from the fender. Now that they have some crazy offset they put a ton more load on the wheel bearings and then they go bad prematurely. Do you think Toyota should warranty out a wheel bearing that prematurely wore out due to this? I know this is a bit more of the extreme but if they didn't put warning about how it could void a warranty then it would be hard for them to decline it.

I have a similar setup, 3.5" lift and 35" tires and I've been charting my fuel consumption since I purchased the truck back in November. With the OEM equipment setup, no lift and the Falken Wild Peak 20s, I was getting about 16.8 mpg. Post lift and tires I'm averaging about 14 mpg, and it doesn't seem to matter what grade of fuel I put in the tank. Hope this helps.

Did the tech ever get back to you? Was there an issue with the hybrid not working properly?

I have the hybrid with a 3" lift and 35" tires. My MPGs are averaging about 16.5 with mixed driving. A little more city than highway. And that's with my lead foot wife driving it. If I drive it, I get about 17. I was getting 18.5-20 before the lift and tires. Admittedly, I live in Phoenix and winter gas is not a problem here. But I do see a drop in the summer with AC running all the time. I have noticed with the lift/larger tires, my truck does not go into electric mode as much, which I assume is due to the larger, heavier tires, and changing the aerodynamics. Still, happy I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Maybe you're enjoying the power too much? Don't know, just a guess.

My F150 hybrid has a 2" level on the front and 34.25 inch tires on it and I usually see 18.5-19, but I was getting 21-22 prior to the level/tires. So you will see a drop with your set-up, but what you're experiencing sounds extreme, at least from my driving style. That said, I'll be moving to Wisconsin this summer, so I'll get to see what winter gas does in my rigs next year. Do you live in Wisconsin? If so, what part? I'm moving to the Madison area.

yes, your larger tires are a lot for the 48 horsepower battery to turn all on its own…….

Correct. Tires that big and heavy turn your 10 speed into a 8 or 9 speed and the rpm level and boost levels will be elevated.

Hence why Toyota should give options for the gearing. 3.31 is ridiculous for a truck. Hell, my F150 hybrid has 3.73s and gets better mileage to boot.

Nittos make a larger tire in C load range, but yeah tires and lift will equal terrible mpgs.

There is a reason why the TRD Pro comes with small tire 18 inchers in a off road tire which to me look funny.

You say that, but some of these folks are getting worse mileage than a Raptor on 37s with no hybrid assist. Toyota just seems unable to maximize MPGs in a truck like the domestic brands can.

I run 275 75 20s on my truck with no lift in a complete TRDOR packaged Limited Hybrid Tundra and I return 16-18 mpg around town and up to 20 on the highway so no a Raptor on 37s will not be close. My 2016 Gen 2 Raptor returned 14-16 mpg combined. This is also on Toyo Open Country E load tires which are heavy. I bet it would return better with the same sized Nitto Ridge Grapplers in the same size but C load.

I have found though that premium returns higher mpgs and the mid-grade is about the best bag for the buck if you will for our trucks. It returns just about the right mpg for the price.

Yes, but you’re not running 35s with a 3 inch lift. You’re comparing apples and oranges. I was getting 21-22 out of a stock Powerboost with the stock size of about 33”. Never got that with my stock Tundra hybrid.

at that size my tire is approximately 34s to 34.5 inchers so yeah it is pretty close but there is no lift which is why I said I didn't have one. However, some person above posted with a lift getting roughly the same mpg as me.
