    -Mileage that problem/failure happened: 24,000

-What actually happened: Drove it about 80 miles in the morning with no issues. Went out to run some errands a few hours later and noticed a knocking sound when driving down my street. It died in my driveway when I got back and displayed "engine stopped, steering power low" warning. #1 rod bearing was spun. Dealer replaced short block, cams, cam trays, cam gears, lifters, and sent the head to be inspected and cleaned. 29 days in the shop.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): pavement pounder

    -Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): stock

    -Mileage that problem/failure happened:
    36,500

    Build date 2/22

    -What actually happened:

Stared it up this morning, heard a clunking/knocking noise, turned it off and back on same noise, gave it a little gas and it sounded even worse,No warning messages, no check engine lights on etc etc. had it towed to the dealer and got a call back within 3 hours that it is blown and they’ll be doing a short block replacement on it. This is all covered by the standard 60k power train warranty. They gave me an Avalon as a loaner. Estimated 2 or more month timeline.

    -Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder):
Mostly a pavement pounder. Very little Offroad/trial use.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): I have a JB4 piggyback tuner on, that I took off before taking it to the dealer. 3 inch icon leveling kit, and 35inch tires.

Here’s some pics of the new short block, and old components. Said to be done on 12/27/2023. Less than a month. Seems like they’re starting to expedite parts and approvals with it being such a common occurrence now.

below is what the dealer sent me. He said they will rebuild engine block. I asked about a new engine he said must be done part by part. No loaner yet he said they are trying. I’m not too familiar with trucks and engines fellas. I’m worried.

Just had an engine failure in my own 2022 Tundra Limited.
    Has 69k miles on it.
    Bought it in May 2022.
    No mods of any kind.
90% highway miles in SW Florida
    10% regular city driving
    0 off-road use
All oil changes done on time or early, mostly at dealership.

Was driving home from the beach the other night and heard a light knocking sound coming from the front.
Parked when I got home and popped the hood. I had the engine running and was listening for the knock in the front. Engine suddenly shut down with a bad sound. Did not get a single check engine light or warning. Tried to restart the truck but it could not turn and sounded seized. Still does not have any error codes.
Had it towed and am currently waiting on Toyota in Naples, FL to have a look and see. Seems though that the engine experienced what I've seen with a few other 22/23's on this forum, ie spun bearing/defective bearings.
The truck is just outside the warrenty window which is definitely concerning, considering a new engine is in the range of $30k. I am waiting to see what they do about it and am hoping they make it right considering that its the new model year and the numerous other nearly identical failures at lower mileages. I've babied this truck and is 90% highway driven. Never been off-road. Have only owned Toyotas in the past and never had issues. Had a 2019 Tacoma as my last truck which I sold because I was excited for this new model Tundra. I was told not to worry that its a new model year because "it was a Toyota". Should have maybe waited a couple years considering how many issues I've seen on this forum.
We are a Toyota family and have owned Toyotas exclusively for 15 years + and never had an experience like this with a car from them. Serviced the vehicle almost exclusively at dealerships, aside from 1 or 2 at a very reputable mechanic a few minutes from my house, since the dealership is 45 mins away.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with goodwill repairs from Toyota. I am not one to ask for handouts, but a failure of this magnitude within 10 mins of the first sign of a problem and no engine lights is unheard of to me. I run a small home building business and was planning to build our fleet with entry level trims of the Tundra's because of their reliability. Also have been shopping around dealerships for a Toyota for my wife. I preach Toyota to work colleagues and other friends I have who drive American trucks and have convinced at least one to switch to a Tundra. I look pretty stupid now with a catastrophic engine failure at only 69k miles. I took my Tacoma to 90k miles in only 2 years and never had a single issue. Overall disappointing but am hoping Toyota stands by their reputation and makes things right.

My wife was driving home from work and the truck stopped dead while at highway speed. She was stranded on a freeway stack in rush hour traffic. DPS officer stopped and wasn’t able to start the truck but was able to get it into neutral. The officer had to push her with his patrol vehicle in order to move her into a safe spot, where a tow truck could get to her. I arrived shortly after and by then she was able to start the truck but, it sounded like it was running very rough and had a noticeable clanking sound. The dealership is still in the diagnostic phase but they are indicating a short block replacement. I’ve escalated the situation to Toyota USA for answers. This truck was in the shop for three months last year to fix the window rattle… been a Toyota family for over 20 years and we love our Tundra. I certainly hope Toyota makes this right. Can’t believe this hasn’t been a recall.

I purchased a 2022 Tundra back in October of 2022, I have roughly 36,000 miles on it. October 19th of 2023 my engine went out and I had it towed to a Toyota dealer, after Toyota investigated the the problem it was discovered that the engine bearing wasn’t machined properly and wrecked the engine. After 2 months of Toyota having my vehicle they put it all back together and the truck wouldn’t crank, come to find out the valves we not manufactured properly so they had to resend the small engine block back out. This month (January) finally put it back together and test drove it. Toyota called me Tuesday 01/30 and said they put the truck on the rack and noticed oil leaking from the rear main seal, so now they are currently working on that issue. January 19th 2024 made 3 months since I had my truck.

My engine went out on a remote freeway in Arizona at 41,504 miles and 18 hours from our home. The motor died without warning almost getting us rear ended by a semi. Dash message said oil pressure loss, pull over and restart. My wife and I waited 5 hours for a tow to the dealer in Lake Havasu. Because they already had two 2022 Tundras in the queue for engine replacement, they told me it would be there for up to two months. They offered a loaner Camry for two weeks. What a joke. Mine was the fifth 2022 Tundra at that dealer for engine replacement.
I took it in for service every 5k miles. No modifications. Build March 2022. Limited towing use of a light trailer. Only drove on paved roads.

2022 SR5 OR 4x4 bought at 28k. Currently has 41k miles no major issues so far. Normal use, occasional tow, 3.5lift and 35s added by me 10k ago (I'm a mechanic professionally) I also use Schaeffer oil every 5k, I took 2 oil analysis of first two oil changes from two independent labs. Took my truck to Toyota for the fuel line recall and got some information on my truck and others..

Toyota told me my truck had the engine replaced at 20k..which I suspected something serious went on as you could tell someone had been on the Bell housing bolts.

I was informed by a Toyota advisor that Toyota failed to put connecting rod bearing retainers or tabs on the rod bearing. Bearing eventually spins, can't oil and eats itself. He also told me they had a 2024 with 70miles same issue. Im unsure if anyone else has heard anything similar? Or has seen said bearing to verify? Thank in advance.

Purchased Dec 2022 with 8k miles.

-What actually happened: Randomly noticed subtle knocking sound from engine when accelerating. Noise was replicated when reving engine on park. Engine levels were fine, no alert messages on dash. Within this timeframe my car did shut off once with. a message that stated something like "engine stopped". Vehicle turned back on like normal. Took into the dealership the next morning and like others stated it is needing a new engine, eta 2-3 months. They have another Tundra in the shop with the same issue.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): light towing, primarily pavement

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): level kit with 35s

2022 1794, no modifications, 45k miles bought April 2022. Maybe 400 miles towing with light trailer. No off-roading. All called for servicing done at dealer or local garage. 4th cracked seat side panel noted on same day as engine failure. All campaigns and recalls taken care of.

Date happened 3/28/2024. Noticed a rough ride and noise on startup. Able to drive and noise and vibrations seemed to get better at speed. Some random dash lights came on and quickly went off. No lights stayed on or did vehicle stop.

Yesterday, I went to dealership and they determined an engine failure of some type. Toyota said to take the engine apart and a rep will come to look at it. Not sure what repair will be. Was given a loaner vehicle—RAV 4.

What happened: Accelerated to highway speed and heard a pop. Lost power. Took several attempts to restart. But it did start. Drove 2 days and it died again. Started knocking. Got it to the dealership today and there was metal in the oil. They think it's the crankshaft bearing.

Mods: 3 inch lift, TRD drop in air filters, 285/75R18, magnaflow overland exhaust.

Maintenance: all recommended intervals, serviced by the dealership, with an extra oil change every 5k.

    Usage: daily driver, off roading

    Engine failure got me too.

    22 SR5 crew cab picked up 1/22.
    Mileage: 33,000

What happened: driving at highway speeds, decelerating on exit ramp the truck shut off. Tried to restart after and wouldn't spin over. Waited 10 mins, looked it over and it started, but sounded horrible. Was able to drive to the dealer; it was a short distance. They found significant metal in the pan. Waiting for more information now.

No modifications, all maintenance done at dealer.

Usage: daily driver, tow dump trailer a few times a month. A few times a year I pull a tractor/backhoe at 10,000 pounds

Update: A little backstory:At about 10K miles I was accelerating onto a highway and the truck died and I coasted to the side of the road. I restarted it and it started and sounded fine. Brought it to the dealership, they had it a few days and could see it stored in the computer, but could not determine what happened.
Fast forward to now with a bad motor. The tech said that it was a number 1 rod bearing that spun, not a main bearing. It was paper thin, and the oil pan was full of sludge/metal flakes assumed to be the bearing material. He believes that the first stall was the bearing spinning, then the oil holes were no longer aligned and it has been starved of oil. Why it spun originally is unknown. They are currently rebuilding it, short block is there, heads had to be machined and waiting on parts at the moment.

Final (hopefully): got the truck back yesterday, took just about 3 weeks to get rebuilt. Drives great so far. The bill was $29,800, but of course it was under warrenty.

My 2022 limited started knocking lil over a week ago at 30K miles. No check engine and motor did not lock but took to my dealer 5/22/24.
Since then I was told it’s engine problem by dealer but we all know what it is…
Their diagnostic is not complete yet to know the extent of parts replacement.
My dealer does not loan out Toyota so I was given rental vehicle (Nissan Titan “junk”) and told to get comfortable in it…it’s going to be weeks…
I love my Tundra (thankfully leased) but leaning towards having it replaced since I was planning on buying it..not so much anymore but don’t want to start payments over again. Trying to buy a boat.

I live in San Diego, CA.

edit: all maintenance done by dealer on time. No engine mods, just cosmetic.

Ive got a 2023 Tundra, last week at 26040 miles I was driving and the dash lit up telling me the engine was off and to pull over. It didnt want to start, actually turned over slow like it was struggling to turn it over, but it continued to try and it started, seemed to run ok, drove home another 30 miles and noticed a knock just above idle. Its a highway use and in town driver. I do use it to tow from time to time, always on pavement. It is bone stock.

I wish I had my 2016 Tundra now. New to the Forum but I have owed a 2007,2012,2014,2016 and now the 2023. When I firsted bought the 2023 I was in Love but boy that has been short lived. I bought the truck Nov. of 2022. I recently took it to the dealership for rough idiling twice now and then today they tell me there is a recall for the engine. When I asked what the remedity is they basically told me to drive it until it fails or they have the remedity in place which will be sometime in July whichever comes first. Called Toyota directly and they basically told me the same thing but did give me one other option. Replace the engine out of pocket and maybe I can be reimburst if that is what the remedity ends up being. Seriously did Toyota of all people just tell me that? Come on Toyota do better. So here are my statistics so far.

Around 20K miles I started hearing ticking and rough idiling.
Mostly used for highway use but I do pull my side x side with it often.
3 inch lft with 35" tires.
I change my oil every 5k miles regardless.

Ok so quick update. The dealership I have been dealiing with for 10 years now that I bought the truck from orginally and was looking into the issue called me yesterday asked me to bring the truck back up there. Basically it boils down to they bought my truck back for what I paid for it. And then applied that cash to a new 2024 Tundra with a 2024 build date. I know this my not be the perfect solutions but for now that is the best solution for my situation.

~28k miles. Not sure on build date but bought new in early March 22. It is a SR5, non-hybrid.
Driving home from work on May 22nd (few days before recall notice came out). Thankfully I had just pulled off the interstate onto a regular 45mph road. all of a sudden the engine just turned off (no loud noises or any signs of trouble before that), got the same warning as everyone else about engine stopped. Pulled over, tried to restart, wouldn't even crank. Starter began smoking. Had it towed to dealer. Service tech told me part of the starter melted. Dealer was kind enough to give me a loaner Taco until mine Tundra is fixed (4-6 week estimate). They didn't give me any trouble, they said it'll all be warrantied.

    Pavement Pounder

Stock except some behind grill lights I added (thankfully they didn't give me any grief on those).

2022 Limited Crewmax 5.5 29,000 miles. Same as the rest, lights came one, some shuddering. However, the truck did not 'die' and was able to drive to service. They said at least a month and full engine rebuild. I also am VERY interested in possibly pursuing a buyback from Toyota or Trade for a new one. (Just bummed my same Mesquite isn't available in the same build for '24!)

I am very thankful for this forum discussion
I have a 22 SR5 and September 5 of this year the passenger side camshaft seized.
it was covered under warranty, but it has me worried. What’s next

I bought this vehicle new in November 2022.
On June 13th while driving on the highway with cruise control on, my vehicle disengaged cruise control, Engine warning and parking brake error lights came on, began shuttering, and stalled out while driving 118km/h (75mph). Thankfully light traffic at the time. I called the dealer and arranged to have it towed. Dealership had the vehicle for most part of the day and let me know the engine had failed and that a short block replacement would be necessary. He told me anything that oil touches will be replaced. He told me best case is two weeks, but that entirely depends on parts availability. They would not offer me a Toyota loaner and we had to fight with Toyota Canada to cover a rental. They would only cover $50 (CAD)/day for a rental which is ridiculous. After back and forth talks they are covering a rental. Very disappointed with Toyota at the moment.

Circumstances: bought this truck new last Father’s Day. I was side swiped after two weeks of owning it. Spent 8 weeks in the body shop.

March, 2024. My truck kept having a dead battery, if it sat for more than a couple days. Kept getting worse and I tested the battery and it was fine. Then on march 6th the truck died completely. No errors on dash, besides the collision avoidance wasn’t working. Brought to dealer and needed the hybrid inverter replaced. Took two weeks.

Yesterday, driving back from work after not driving it for a couple days. It was driving fine, then all of a sudden, hybrid malfunction came up, along with 12volt charging error, and parking brake error. Managed to limp it home no problem.

went to drive it to the dealer this morning and made it about 2km, when the engine seemed to go to hybrid mode in the school zone. Up until then, everything seemed fine running wise. Then lost everything and couldn’t start it back up. Waiting for a tow now.
