My 1st aka best gen is an early model, has 219 on the clock, runs like a champ. 4.7 2UZ engines just need maintanence done really. New belts every 50 to 80k, check for leaks around the water pumps, chexk the tensioners and pullies. Other thn that led them oiled and with good coolant in the raidiator they'll go for a long time. Oh and dobthe coil packs, with oem ones. Keep the old ones with rhe milage wrote on the box, just in cse you ever need a spare

Parts are a bit more than that if you source from Toyota.

Is that from a Toyota dealer?

I love saving a few bucks as much as the next guy but there are some things I buy directly through an outlet affiliated with Toyota.
I also don’t buy parts on eBay or Amazon.

No, not from a stealership. That’s from Yotashop.com.

    Here’s from Rockauto

Yeah - I paid about double that. Still less than MSRP. I’m okay with it.

You do know that there are Chinese knockoffs of “Genuine” Toyota parts? There are some telltale signs to know like the actual Toyota P/N sticker and the packaging.

Hopefully everyone is aware of that. Everyone should also be aware that Toyota is not making most of these parts, so they are not "Toyota" parts. The OEM water pump is made by Aisin, and then branded with Toyota (as shown in the pic above where the part is being sold as Aisin and the Toyota is ground off). The OEM bearings are made by Koyo. OEM MAF is made by Hitachi etc. You can buy from a dealer and get OEM Toyota branded versions of these parts and be 98% sure they are genuine. These parts are also available from other reputable sellers without the Toyota markup.

    Hey Matt,
How are you enjoying the Tundra with the 4.7 engine? I am looking to purchase one with the same engine but I am worried it may be "underpower"

The belt can jump a few teeth and not cause issues. My 1st gen Tundra had it happen when a mouse decided to chew a hole through the plastic t belt cover and make a nest. The truck started fine then suddenly ran like crap. Between the body and all the nest junk it caused the left bank cam to jump two teeth. I had just changed it 10k before but didn't want to risk it breaking so I changed it again.

280k on a 05 4.7 in a Sequoia. Had to bypass the SAIS and kept up on fluid changes and the timing belt. Still does not use any noticeable oil and its mileage is like new. Have been using a high mileage synthetic blend oil since 70k.

It did come with the auto adjusting rear air suspension, it went out at 250k ish a couple years ago and it was replaced with springs. Don’t believe that is a Tundra option.

Another 2005 Sequoia here - 246k on the clock and runs like a top. Still on the original air suspension but will make the same move once it fails.

The FAA certifies engines for aircraft, they do not "approve" them (pilot here). It takes years and many $100k to go through this process and there are scarce few that have made it in the last decade or so. The Toyota engine is not among them.

Can you site any credible resources on your claim?

I have heard about the UZ engine being certified for aircraft (though never actually used) from Carcarenuts channel. I found this:

I have a 2005 Toyota Landcruiser 100 series with 209,000 miles and it also has the 4.7. Just a great engine that is smooth, quiet and does not use any oil. It is on its third timing belt that I had done at a Toyota dealer.

Well, it turns out you guys were right on this and I was totally wrong. It showed up, some hype about it and "poof" disappeared, never went anywhere. This has happened on occasion (Porsche engine in Mooney aircraft as an example). A few experts on the aviation forum I frequent (BeechTalk) came up with the information. One example they showed was the Orenda 600hp V-8 that was intended to replace the PT-6 turbo-prop at time of overhaul or replacement. At a cost of over $40 million for certification it went "poof" also and really never went anywhere. It would be cool to have one of those under the hood of a car though.

I have attached the FAA Certification Document (TCDS-E00052EN).

I didn’t think about this until now, but perhaps this explains why one of my friends (who is a pilot) owns 4 vehicles with the UZ engine. He told me it was his favorite motor-he added that he actually likes the fact that it has a timing belt vs chain. He likes the belt because it forces one to do the preventative maintenance and the timing system is renewed vs a chain being not serviced at regular intervals.
