A new manifold, or a TVS 2650, will be a requirement.

Engine control for at least one of the Dakar trucks is listed as Motec M1.

    Engine Control Motec M1

Central Display Motec C187 (with datalogger)

    Driver Display Motec C125

    PDM Motec PDM30 (2 units)

On one of the most recent builds ProSpeed machined and made a new intake for the Tundra motor.

They built it for their turbo charged truck,, if I remember correctly.

Well that was quick! Are you at the point where you can share further details? I’d love to build a 3UR based engine w/ D4-S and Yamaha heads.

It's something I've had in the works for a little while. The conversation here steering towards MoTeC got me a little excited :)

I'm working on a package for a full Engine/Trans solution with custom firmware. Don't hold your breath; we're nowhere near ready to go. A M142 box would be the ticket for a D4S configuration w/ the DI based firmware. Engine control isn't the "difficult" part, it's the trans integration.

Current solutions on the market retain the OE ECU for trans and throttle control, giving fueling, ignition, and VVTi operations over to the MoTeC. However, you could go full standalone on the engine side with an aftermarket trans controller such as the one from Compushift (https://hgmelectronics.com/pages/toyota-lexus-ab60-transmission-controller) controlling the trans. Or in the future a custom firmware package allowing the engine/trans to be controlled via the M1.

Well, slowing down a little here, the D4-S 3UR will have to be for another vehicle. Probably an older Land Cruiser with manual transmission, though who knows? The Tundra has too many work duties ATM, and the OBD II will be an issue with the DMV. I’m still on board.

I wanted to post this last week but kept getting an error on the forum for some reason:

"I've had this discussion with someone who was involved in some builds with Toyota engines with D4-S and from what I'm told the Motec doesn't control the DI system or even the transmission. It's more of a piggyback system that just overrides all the other engine parameters, and they tune the stock ECU for everything else. What's great about Motec and other few standalone ECUs is their universal canbus customization and being able to keep the stock ECU happy regardless of how the engine is tuned. Other than transplanting a whole 2UR harness and all the other components + a Motec ECU to just keep the stock ECU and DI controller happy, this won't work as smoothly as it seems.

However, Motec also came out with a DI controller - MoTeC - GPA-DI - solely for this purpose. It seems to contradict itself though as it shows to have the GT86/BRZ in both suitable and not suitable categories which uses the Toyota D4-S DI system similar to the Lexus. The 2UR-GSE is nowhere on that list (they support the engine speed though lol), but they might be working on other platforms and adding support as they go.

Then again, all these Motec components are far from affordable which is why I prefer Haltech for their free feature updates overtime and more affordable approach. I'm sure they will also offer a similar product for DI but I doubt its anytime soon."

Glad to see someone working on this. Confirms what I've heard that tuning the transmission with a single standalone ECU is still not ready. Another guy I found on instagram was able to tune a Toyota AA80 using a Haltech Nexus. Same time last year I was planning to swap the AC80 8 speed from the +2016 LC200 (Which is basically a beefed up AA80) as it has shown to hold 1000HP without any modification other than a tune.

I even contacted Haltech and they confirmed a Nexus is able to control the 7 solenoids in that transmissions which is surprisingly 1 less solenoid than the AB60. My goals were a little higher than 1000HP and they seem to burn/slip at anything over that. Raybestos are planning to release stronger clutches but their rep said it won't be anytime soon so probably 2-3 years from now.

Anyway, I went a different route and I just recently ditched my built AB60 and Compushift for a ZF 8HP90 and a Turbolamik. The 8HP platform is getting crazy support that the Toyota 8 speeds never will. I just got the last piece of the puzzle yesterday and drove it around for a few minutes. Waiting on a detail and an alignment. I'll make a full post about it soon after I've put some miles on it.

It's a lost cause for me now, I originally said "after I've done this and this, I'll stop", now it's "alright, this is my annual budget"

I'm always curious on how they drive, what about transmission? if someone can offer an 8hp swap, I'll ship the truck over.

Why not? All the rest of the money is clearly ear marked for safety items, maintenance, and general service.

All good all things considered. I had to go through 2 driveshafts before getting a CF one from DSS to solve my vibration issue. My only issue with the current setup is the Turbolamik can't skip gears, and it gets pretty annoying when trying to overtake someone. They say they're working on an update to address this issue, but it has been a while. Other controllers like CANTCU and MaxxECU don't seem to have this issue.

Other than that, it shifts and drives great. I could barely keep it up to temp that I had to install a thermostat to keep it in operating range. I was also able to keep the stock shifter by using a haltech linear position sensor hooked up to the shifter cable.

Do you have parts list handy to do this swap? Assuming below
torque converter, bellhousing adapter plate, trans, custom trans mount, modded exhaust, Engine management items (haltech etc)

The AE80F 8 speed Land Cruiser transmission has my interest… it bolts in place of the AB60F and of course runs behind a 3UR. Making it work in a Tundra is purely down to the electronics and tuning. Motec or Haltech, while interesting, is out for me due to emissions here in MA.

I’m willing to contribute wherever I can to make that swap a reality.

Yes… but then what else needs to come along with that ECU? The list could get long.

Having a more PnP transmission is definitely ideal if we can get the ecu and tcm to work nicely together.

Starting to think the most economical thing you could do right now for yours is get a junkyard trans and get a modified VB on it for the time being. It could buy you time to figure out a nice long term solution like this for a trans that can handle real power long term…and then share the recipe of course.
