After undercoating, which parts shouldn't be sprayed for degradation concerns?

Yea my follow up questions was whether to leave it alone all winter or to periodically wash the underside after application during peak salt season

Might be a question for @Jack McCarthy .

We only get salt once or twice a winter so I typically try to wash it off if I have to drive in it.

Hard to say myself. My frame is already protected externally with POR-15 so I only spray areas that get heavy amounts of salt or areas I infrequently touch (i.e underside of the bed). Back before POR-15, life was easier here in that the DOT used rock salt here instead of brine. The brine you have to spray twice to get most of it off with the power wand sprayer.

However, the fluid film will hold up to a cleaning or two before reapplication so I've noticed. You’ll have to experiment and see what works for you.

I think quite a few people just make sure they get complete coverage and go the winter without a spray but I’m not sure.

I don't wash the underside all winter. Come spring I give the entire underside a full-on thorough rinse, which takes me about half an hour and results in getting wet and dirty because it requires getting on hands and knees and on your back to get a good water rinse in every nook and cranny. I then let it dry for a few days/a week then apply a fresh coat of WD-40 as my schedule permits.

I wash my truck nearly every week in the winter. I have a hose spigot that connects to the hot water lines so I can use warm water to wash the truck. So far, it's proven to work great.

I have used Fluid Film in the past and am currently using the PB Blaster stuff, both work quite well and aren't sprayed off easily. I never have needed a pressure washer to rinse off salt, a normal garden hose has worked just fine for me.

I'm not sure about the "no wash" method, as I just haven't tried it. I get anxious just seeing salt sitting on the body/frame, I could never go all winter without washing it off.

I need to touch mine up this year before winter. Do you pressure wash as much of the old off as possible and reapply? Mine is pretty dirty from Moab/New Mexico dust from our trip last year. There is still a decent layer on the frame. Hadn't made up my mind as to what makes more sense.

Yes I'm still trying to get mine clean before I reapply. It's amazing how that AZ dust gets in every crack.

How are y’all getting under there to spray? Trying to find a nearby shop to let me use their lift to get all the possible nooks and crannies but wondering if borrowing some ramps or jackstands might be good enough?

I just crawl under there either on my back or my rolling creeper. Plenty of room under there for me. I doubt you'll need any ramps but they might help.

Was thinking that but call me a health nut but wasn’t trying to spray like 2 inches from my face lol and also miss areas that are out of my field of view, and running stock height and tires so it’s pretty tight for me. Also it’s never been coated before so I’m trying to get it done nice and right at least for the initial one

Yeah they claim Fluid Film is non-toxic but who knows if that is true or not. I don't blame you for not wanting a face full. You could always put on a 3M mask.

I used PB Blaster Surface Shield on my new Tundra. I have already used in on my wife's 2020 Highlander and so far, so good. Mind you we tried not to take the Highlander out in very bad weather over the winter as we had another vehicle we used as our winter beater.

I tried to avoid directly spaying on rubber or plastic components but overspray is inevitable. I used 3 cans of the stuff and also lowered the spare tire to spray under that as well as the the top and underside of the rim. I hit the trailer hitch as it is always prone to corrosion as well as front suspension components. Surface Shield does attract dust and small particles but I would rather have that than rust. Plus nothing a power washer won't be able to take off if I want to. Since we got rid of the winter beater, the new truck will be our main ride during this winter so in the spring I will see how well it held up.

Apprently I relooked at SS website and they say that it’s fine for electronics rubber wires and plastic… but you know they told us once that cigs were fine at one point in history

I also saw that if there’s preexisting surface rust that SS would essentially cease their progress and even turn it black. Well seeeeee

There used to be a person we'll call them "Heather" that swore by soaking with a rust penetrant, I assume to displace water then spraying with FF or something similar after to coat. I'll see if I can find it...
