Unfortunately, it seems you have fallen victim to the marketing numbers that the Big 3 provide regarding towing/hauling. No one in their right mind would tow more than a 6000# to 7000# trailer with a 1/2 ton truck -- it does not matter whether Ford is rated at 13,000# and Toyota is lower at 11,000#. These numbers are meaningless. Towing a bumper pull trailer that is heavier than a truck is pure torture. Almost everybody that tows heavy uses an HD truck for the extra curb weight, more stout rear suspension, etc. Tundra seems to be a few hundred pounds heavier than equivalent Big 3 trucks, so I'd say it might tow a bit better, if anything. Same ting for payload numbers. Go to a dealership and compare the yellow sticker on the door jam of an F150 or a Tundra. Most are less than 200# apart. The heavy duty payload package Ford and GM offer is a unicorn. You cannot find such a truck on dealers lot and most likely have to order them. Ford trucks with significantly higher payload numbers are mostly lower trim trucks, double cab, with long bed. Most people want more creature comfort in their trucks. And Those want more payload simply go with an HD truck. The towing/hauling deficiency of Tundra is mostly a myth.

While I agree with 99% of what you said, you also have to remember that the manuf raising the payload and tow capacity I turn affects how it tow those 6-7k. Just like a 3/4 ton will tow 6-7k with ease, the better the manuf make these 1/2tons the easier they can pull lighter weight, what average people pull. I can say that towing my 7k boat behind my truck is not exactly non worry-some. I would never pull the full tow capacity with my truck, I’d go 3/4 before I do that.

I unloaded my 2017 Tundra on Thursday for a good price.
I picked up my Ram 5.7 Hemi Etorque on Friday.
I have no intentions on bashing the Tundra but I will say my early impressions on the Ram are very positive.
Cabin is ultra quiet. The ride is butter smooth. The tech is outstanding.
Truth be told, if this Ram proves to be reliable I will probably not look back to a Tundra unless they make significant changes.
This is coming from an admitted Toyota fan.
I hope all new gen owners will be satisfied with their decision and for anyone in the market I’d suggest exploring your options and not going into a large purchase with blinders.

I actually dont hate the 3rd gen at all. It didnt insult my family or something. Its just a truck/product that I dont want. Just like every other truck or car thats out there that I didnt buy. I am not on the Volkswagon forums bashing Tiguans because I wouldnt like to own one. The article was bashing the 3rd gen, as were other people on this thread, i simply said that the contents of that article dont matter to most people, because most people arent car guys like the people on this forum so the minor grievances raised by the article rings hallow to people and they will still buy the 3rd gen because it says toyota regardless of the sound the doors make when they close or a mushy brake pedal or whatever other shit they said that doesnt matter to most people who just want a car because it looks cool, says toyota or feel like it goes fast or some shit. The comment about going fast in a car they cant afford is a general dig at the american public to emphasize the previous points about peoples simplicity/ignorance/aloofness when it comes to buying shit because they simply want it for whatever reason, not because they did their due diligence as a consumer and researched exactly what they needed versus wanted.

I don't know man, so my presumably non-metrosexual truck (2016 platinum) has less payload (only 1100 lbs), less towing, is slower, and rides like shit is non-metrosexual?

I guess I don't get what that means, Im not really into all the different identifiers now a days.

I was looking forward to having a higher payload by couple hundred pounds and not getting my teeth rattled out of my head to try and carry a whopping 1100 lbs. I cant even get in it and haul 1,000 lbs which is a "1/2 ton"

so not sure we (gen 2.5 owners) should be talking trash like its short on capabilities. Like the TFL video where they pulled 8500 lbs up that steep grade and it didnt even break a sweat at like 2,000-2,500 rpm, our 5.7s would be riving like crazy to do that.

yes you have to use premium to get full rated power in the 6.2, that was a factor for me when I tested it as at least around here, premium is like a 1.00 more per gallon, its stupid.

and motor trend has never really had anything good to say about any gen tundras, no matter what toyota does, they are "old and outdated". its total bullshit honestly, I drove the 6.2 GMC At4 full loaded and a tundra gen 3, I don't agree at all with their conclusions, wasnt my experience at all, the tundra was solid and road WAY better. and the inside does not look dated compared to the GM, the new refresh isnt that great FFS. Ram is nicer than either to be honest.

it seems like its a bunch of GM fans over there at motor trend, its always been that way. Even when the gen 2 was hands down the unquestioned reliability and resale kind of the truck world, that never even was brought up or mattered in their reviews. That right there shows me it's just a bunch of biased crap. I used to have subsritoion to that and truck trend and followed it closely as I have had every gen tundra out there.

so ya, that write up wasnt much to "write home about"

this ^. at least compared to my 5.7 which I feel is no slouch, when I got back into my 2016 after my test drive of the gen 3 I felt like it was slow.

I guess if you want like a race truck or something, they are slow, but for normal use they get our of their own way.

I traded out of a ram limited e torque model and it was nice. Very nice. Until it wasn’t. That thing spent more time in the shop than any vehicle I have ever owned.

You have been very articulate on this forum and participate often. It suddenly occurred to me you have been consistently critical but have no experience with a 3rd gen. Dude, go drive one so your opinions are based on real life experience. You might even like the 3rd gen. Just a little challenge for you and I hope you can meet your financial goals so you can get a new truck.

My Tundra was in the shop 8 times.
Once for a blower motor. Once for a fuel pump. 6 times for a the alcohol density issue Toyota flat ignores.
And finally when I unloaded it my passenger cam tower was seeping.
Let’s not pretend the Tundra was some bullet proof super truck.
Yes, they are excellent trucks and for the most people very reliable.
I’ve spent a ton of time researching Ram reliability and the 5th gen has proven to be very reliable. Not to mention countless owners who have owned Rams with high mileage and zero problems. Plus, there’s numerous Tundra owners that jumped ship doing the same shit former Ram/Ford/GM owners are doing on this site.
    It’s no different.
The new Tundra seems to have plenty of issues. We can blame it on a new roll out. Maybe it is. Maybe it won’t be. Only time will tell.

My truck rides great, I did put 6112/5160 so it did get stiffer. It still doesn’t rattle my teeth. I don’t carry much, at least nothing close to max payload. Towing is fine for my boat. As for TFL, I take their test with a grain of salt, for anything they test. It’s test that the majority of truck owners will never do. I don’t think anyone wants to drive up a steep road at full tow capacity, floored to the floor. Show me what the truck can do regularly on that same road.

Other than that, my opinion (like an asshole, everyone has one) if you’re getting offended about a materialistic thing then you need help. You think I get offended about what people have said about my 2020, nope. Have at it, it’s a truck and it’s certainly not perfect.

I will say that Toyota changed the way the 5.7 acts. I remember the first one I had, 08, that thing would jump out of the hole. Now it’s more tamed. But if you push the tow/haul button that same jump comes back. But then again I got away from fast trucks, 06 Silverado SS S/C and 3 Trailblazer SS 1 cam/heads another on spray, last one stayed stock. Always something faster out there.
