Am I the only one that sees a problem with people going 80 mph while towing? Slow it down people!

I use tow haul mode to keep truck in 5th at 2500rpms. In regular mode it turn 3000+ I understand that the 35s play a huge roll in this, but it's just worse than I expected. Guess I need to wind her a little harder.

    Found the problem!

So funny when people completely change the gearing in the truck and expect stock performance...then blame the truck for a situation they created. Since diesels have almost 1000 ft lbs of torque they can better weather the big tire/no re-gear ignorance.

Oh and the 7" lift didn't help at all either. The truck is already a brick and now it's a 7" higher plus bigger tires brick.

Or have the truck re-geared to bring it back to proper specs.

What's the issue doing 80 while towing out of curiosity? If you're driving smart and within the trucks limits, I don't see how it's much different than not towing. Especially in Florida where it's totally flat.

OP get a blower if you want to go fast towing.

I tow a 24’ camper 5-6klbs at 70mph, S4 and sits right at 2900-3k RPM and will easily pull past that. Plenty of power left. I’m on 33’s

Must be something wrong with your truck.

Even my 3rd gen 4runner with the 5vz can pull my 3500# trailer and 2 quads with ease at 80, it doesn't set acceleration records but can easily keep up and pass. There is no way a 5.7 could struggle with that load.....

For one, check out speed ratings of trailer tires. Many are rated for 60-65 mph max.

Second, a 12’ trailer most likely has no brakes of it’s own. What is your trucks stopping distance with another 1500 - 2000 lbs behind it at 80 mph?

Take the drop brackets off and slow down a little bit; the truck is fine.

My truck in a 2017 Limited crew cab Tundra 5.7 with bigger tires, and wifes is a Lariat Ram crew cab with th hemi. I tow a lot, 3000 (my sxs, that pushes a lot of wind) up to 10000, and it does fine, but I hate to say it, the Ram does tow quite a bit better...wouldn't tell her that though. :)

    Maybe some underlying issues?
I have a 21 foot hydro tilt bed and have pulled my Jeep wagoneer and J10 around and barely feels like it’s there

Brother, your feeling the same thing I felt when I went to a half ton. Had a 2002 7.3 powerstroke before my Tundra. Wasn't fast but you could put anything behind it and it would tow like a dream. I towed a D5 dozer on a goosneck trailer at 70mph with out a sweat. I put my 3500lb camper behind the Tundra and you can definitely feel it.

Now I just leave earlier for my hunting trips. Keep it at 65 in Tow/Haul and S mode set to 5th. Tundras like to gear hunt so S mode I can keep that under control. The 5.7 just doesn't have the torque curve a diesel has. You have to get into high rev range to feel it. Which I don't normally do.

    Rough Country Level,
Proper tool for the job. You don't buy a Diesel because you tow twice a year, and you don't buy a 1/2 ton truck because you want to not feel a load behind it.
Instead of 35's and a 7 inch lift you could have installed the supercharger for probably about the same cost. I've never gone up over 3 inches in tires and not re-geared. For the money it's the best investment you can make in a lifted truck if you perform the work yourself. Depending on the tire type, it's just as much the excess rotating weight as it is the leverage arm change with the additional height. Double trouble.

Not really a disadvantage, but you'll keep the rpms down without it. You might see some fuel savings. Hes not towing a very heavy load, around 3000lbs. The truck should handle it just fine.

My boat is about 5000-6000 lbs on the trailer depending on fuel and gear. I bought it a few years ago over 200 miles from home. At the time I owned a Tacoma and I knew a 200 mile tow with that much weight would be hard on it so I used a buddy's Duramax Denali. It towed like a dream. On the highway the Denali go in to 6th gear and chugged along effortlessly, like the boat wasn't even back there. It didn't even shift out of top gear on grades. When I got home and towed with my Tacoma it was so bad I had to buy a Tundra to tow safely. My local boat ramp is only 3 miles from home and my boat shop is about 15 miles. Tacoma to Tundra towing was night and day. Tundra is a good tow rig, but it is still a night and day difference between the Tundra and a diesel.

I have done something similar(probably not 6000 pounds) but that bastard did better than the v6 tacoma I had with the auto.

I just did a tuscon to socal haul of my brother's stuff. Truck did great! It was around 6000 pounds of crap and never did I feel like it didn't have enough power.

I bought this truck with intentions of buying a travel trailer and towing occasionally. As well as a good camping rig. The travel trailer hasn’t happened yet LOL. But I have towed a few things including a 3000 pound boat and trailer. I thought it towed great. I had thought about getting a diesel and I’m so glad I didn’t. The amount of use that truck would get would be silly to own the diesel for me. I have used them in the past and they are a dream out on the highway. But the maintenance cost for how little it would be used and the fact that they really aren’t intended to just be driven back-and-forth to work on a short commute. It would literally have to be a truck I left in the driveway and only used for the specific purpose of long trips hauling something.

I mostly just haul ass now.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'd love to have a toyhauler camper, but would need 3/4 or higher with a diesel to handle it (payload and torque). I have a company provided truck to commute and use for work. My personal truck only gets about 10k miles per year on it as a result.

I really cant justify buying a $50k plus diesel truck to sit in the driveway most of the time. For now I'll just tow within my means...

I’m right around 5K a year Haha. I was going to pick a toy hauler or travel trailer that was well within the means of the tundra. I like them small and agile. Plus I need one to fit in a certain spot in my driveway. Looking at 21 feet total so around a 17 or 18 foot trailer. Which is perfect for me and the wife. Obviously a big giant travel trailer would be sweet But our trucks are right around 10 K max towing. Personally I’d like to be about half that for various reasons. In a perfect world I’d have a big bad diesel and a 30 foot toy hauler LOL as well as the toys to go along. But I know I’d only go once or twice a year. So the smarter choice for me would to be to keep it half ton capable. I’m sure my truck
is down for the task of once or twice a year.

I'd prefer as small as possible too, but my utv is 82" tall and 66" wide and weighs about 1800lbs which means a tall and wide trailer. Sadly that would require a diesel truck most likely
