It has nothing to do with acceleration. It’s driveability. Your truck should stay locked up in 6th gear even if a small hill comes up at 5mph. Your truck doesn’t drive right with tires bigger than stock.

It does though. Torque converter lockup and shift points are determined by the throttle angle in the tune. When a hill comes up with a supercharger it raises boost pressure even if you’re barely on the throttle to 0,1,2 psi. The engine is making much more power at a lower throttle angle than NA at the same throttle angle. Since the throttle angle doesn’t have to rise like it does with NA to maintain speed, the truck doesn’t unlock the converter or downshift. I’d guarantee it holds gears and TC lockup the same if not better than a stock tundra on stock size tires in the same scenarios.

Looking at his message, acceleration is an important thing to him and gears will absolutely help with acceleration. How much I can’t say but it’ll 60 foot better which will help ET’s.

And quit with the scare tactics. It’s not cool. The trucks drive just fine with bigger tires and stock gears. Could it drive better? Sure. But they drive just fine.

@Silver17 I would do it, it's Amazon, worst case they show up and if something seems off or you cant cross reference that the markings are correct then just return it. I've bought some more expensive stuff on Amazon specifically because the money was flowing through them so had some insurance from them being the middle man so to speak.

I’m sure they would help with acceleration and gear holding, that’s why I’m interested in trying them. If these motive gears are legit and I can have them for 2k installed that’s a whole lot more reasonable. I’m just questioning if it’s 3k dollars better when paying the typical full price installed cost.

Just to show I’m not blowing smoke, here is some videos of pulling pretty decent hills (can’t really tell in the videos) in 6th with TC locked at 50mph. These videos are on 285/75/18 tires that measure a true 35”.

That was exactly my thoughts with the Amazon purchase actually. They’re like a buffer and will sooner make it right than if I bought directly from the company selling them if there was an issue and I need to return them. That, an Amazon is just like eBay in that it’s a marketplace for perfectly reputable companies to sell their products. Just like discount tire sells a ton of product on eBay. If anything being listed on amazon just gives that much extra purchase protection. :notsure:

Worst case I won’t want to use them and can’t return them and I lose $175. Big whoop!

Your truck is the ONLY one that drives fine without gears, magically…..Or you don’t notice.

Not trying to argue with you. Helping the next guy. Every tundra has the issues I’ve pointed out.

I’m sorry you’re scared, that’s not my intention at all. Just calling it like it is. If you like how your truck drives with large tires and no gearing, go ahead. But no need to argue with me. I’m here helping a guy. I’ve helped build tens of thousands of tundras over 20 years. My advice is based on fact and experience. Not being scared.

the only thing you’ll regret doing gears with bigger tires is waiting so long.

OR he's spent time on the transmission tune so it's not unlocking the TC so much. I'm only on 34's but have the transmission adjusted to shift/lock much better than stock.

I just feel bad for the new guys seeing this and thinking they don’t need gears with their bigger tires. It’s annoying how a tundra drives. They were specifically programmed to pull 40hp out of their tune. I’m not trying to sell you anything. Talk you into anything. Talk you out of anything. LOL.

There’s like 100 load tables. Without going thru and tuning each and every one of them, the truck don’t drive right with large tires and stock gears.

tuned maybe better than stock, but still not right.

I get 30-300 calls a week from guys with tundras. We talk about every aspect of a tundra. Guess how many transmissions go out……. And guess which ones go out? Just sayin..

I shall not believe my lying eyes when it comes to my tundra pulling hills without downshifts or TC unlocks. Damn things made a fool of me again!

All out of popcorn and ready to get back to the topic at hand here. Jesus!

5.29 Gears are better with big tires, period. They are not necessary, but definitely better.
Amazon is an odd duck sometimes. I bought my Grip Pro through them because the price was seriously cut. My assumption is there is an algorithm that determines a part hasn’t sold well, so prices get slashed. I bought, and the price shot back up the next morning.

Did the same with my Icon hydro bumps, but that was through Walmart dot com of all places. I spent some time checking to make sure it was legit, but it was. Showed up in an Icon box with everything brand new. Saved close to $300 on bumpstops…

    I’d do it…

I was honestly most worried about if the brand Motive was any good assuming they are authentic. Motive actually makes the Powertrax diffs as well as it turns out. These gears are listed on Amazon on the Motive store by a legit Motive vendor according to their own website so I’m feeling pretty confident they are indeed authentic. Whether or not they any good, still not 100% but I’ll have my guy check them out. Most people with tundras seem to use Nitro or Sierra for whatever reason. Either way, I’ll update with pics when they arrive.

I may be mistaken, but I think Nitro was the first to come out with gear sets for the Toyota 10.5. Perhaps why they are so popular. And nitro markets heavily to the Toyota crowd.

I remember seeing Motive Gear ads in perhaps Petersons 4x4 mag years and years ago. I’d guess they cater more to the Jeep and/or domestic crowd. But they’ve been around a while. I think Richmond gear owns them now? Now buy them! And report back!

As an aside question - and not to hijack - but since they don’t have the complete set of 4.88’s on sale, does anybody know if it’s a bad idea to run different brands of gears front and rear? I mean, legitimately, are good reasons to avoid that setup?

Other than the risk of mix matched quality, a 5.29 is a 5.29.

National drivetrain’s eBay store has them on there for the same price as well. 96.6% positive feedback.

    To summarize:

Midwest trucks owns the Motive brand. They’re a great company and a great brand. We are a direct dealer for them;)

Nitro was first, back in about 2010 if I remember right. They were also the only company selling anything aftermarket for about 7 years with 4.88 being the only ratio other than stock available. When Carl sold the company to DPI the brand and the company went to hell in a hand basket.

Tundra on 35s with bumper weight, winch, and some skids. Drove like crap with 4.30s.

Went revolution 5.29s and the difference is insane. Also have regeared 5 trucks now, and know the money is well worth it.

Talk yourself into them or outta them. In my opinion, absolutely worth it, especially if you’re tuned too.

I'd buy 2 sets, one set to send to lab to check for metallurgy, if works, install the second set.

I have the factory gears still in my storage, you can have them to send to lab to do a comparison test.

They’re coming directly from Midwest truck. Does that seal the deal on being legit then? Shipping from Indiana which matches their website for their address.

I was actually looking into that a bit. I was tempted to see if they would fit in a reloading brass tumbler. Basically same idea.

I’ll shop around and grab some, I had been holding off til I was more confident in the gears being decent quality.
