Beer made me a fat ass, I’m sure it would do the same for a cat

I didn't mean to imply that a normal carnivore diet would fix a feline kidney, thats outside of my scope and I apoligize. But a high protein/high moisture/low-no carb diet will greatly reduce the risk of kidney malfunction... for cats!

Kitten food, both wet and dry, is much higher in calories than cat food meant for adult cats. Try giving her that

When I was a young lad, had a 22lb tom who liked to chase the ice cream truck in the summer. You could set anything in front of that cat and as he was eating, reach down to take it away, and he'd just sit and look at you. BUT...... every now and again, he'd get a raw pork kidney. Reach for that and he'd take your arm off!!

@Kung the beginning of your story brought back memories of my boy Max. He was with us for 20 years and was more of a dog than a cat. Just a cool dude. He was a rescue, an indoor/outdoor cat, and one of the best pets I have ever had. One day he just left and he never came back. I heard cats don't like to die near there owners. I think Max walked off to die as he probably knew how sad we would be seeing him die, I sure miss that cat.

Yeah, we've had 2 cats and a dog do that (we live in the middle of nowhere in the Ozarks), so that's what I thought happened - until yesterday when she showed up. She was meowing SO loud that I assume she was fussing my wife out.

High protein feed is last thing you want to do for a cat in kidney failure. Senior food usually has less protein % for the fact of the kidneys.

Edit: Sorry, saw that this was already addressed.

    Hey OP
What a great story! I would strongly recommend using Nutrical. It is a highly digestible, calorie dense supplement in the form of a paste. You could even mix it in regular canned food. I would also feed small meals a few hours apart, rather than a couple of larger meals.
Keep in mind your cat is 18 yrs old (wow) and that significant improvement in body condition will be difficult to achieve. 18 yr old cats also have a much slower metabolism than younger cats. At this age, most cats have lost significant muscle mass due to aging. So, don't be surprised if your cat is not gaining weight.
Wet cat food is much more calorie dense than dry food, so I would feed canned food with Nutrical for at least 30 days. I also recommend a full bloodwork panel, including thyroid function. Hyperthyroidism can cause dramatic weight loss in cats in a very short period of time.
    Keep us posted!

First things first - Mechanicsville! (Wife grew up there and that's where I met her. :) ) In fact we *were* going to fly there next Wednesday for a visit until COVID-19 derailed that.

Yeah, we'd had a full workup scheduled for yesterday, but due to the aforementioned malady, it's on hold for now. I'll likely still take here 2 weeks from now.

The good thing is that she's eating everything in sight; so likely I'll be doing what you're suggesting (Nutrical, several meals, etc.) As it is, she's always sort of eaten a few times a day, and loves snacks (healthy ones lol) so getting her to eat extra won't be a problem. :)
