Alright, so just got off the phone with the manufacturer who checked out both the stadiums and rapids and said both will clear the caliper. The stadiums are ~5mm away from the closest part of the caliper. The rapids didn't show up in their system as an option but when he looked in his system (that shows y/x axis measurements for each vehicle) there was no conflict with the caliper clearance, so he indicated that he thought it was an offset issue...so best with leveling /lift? The rapid (17x9 12mm et (wheelitself without tire) will according to his system sit ~1/5 of an inch inside the fender. He estimated I'd end up with 1 inch of poke with a 285 wide tire.

Re: clearance after balancing weights, he explained that I just need to specify to the installer that I want the weights to be mounted away from the section of the barrel that spins over caliper. Because I've only ever seen weights near the rear(opposite the spokes) lip it was great to learn that weights can can be placed anywhere between the front and rear. Mounting right behind the spoke might be unsightly but at least it makes it mountable. He also mentioned that the weights come in different colours and taking that a step further (in my head) could also be painted to match be painted to blend even more.

    He was incredibly helpful!

This was a very helpful/insightful conversation indeed…thanks to you (and them) for taking the time.

I have had weights mounted in that fashion before (behind the spokes) on some Enkei’s I had on a Maxima light years ago. It actually hides very well.

Honestly though…having to go through to all those precautions (telling the shop how, where, why, etc) sounds really exhausting as I think through it

…I am not sure for me it’s something I want to go through just to save 24lbs total weight on all corners…so I think I’ve made my decision to step away from the 17’s and do the 18’s I have in mind.

Thanks for all the legwork though…much appreciated

It doesn't help that no one stocks or has rims in stock to slap on and try it out. With the exception of one wheel/ tire retailer who has some magic 3rd party source, everyone else I've spoken with is waiting for wheels to leave the manufacturing country's port.

Then again... What could I do anyway given that I have a July allocation date.

I hear ya! I'm not quite there yet.

I wanted the 17s and d load tire for looks and costs (wheels/tires and weight/fuel) but yeah it's a hassle. Although I just bought the e load Cooper's so the weight factor just flew out the window.

Maybe I'll cancel the tire order. Back to the drawing board! Lol

“I was in the same boat as you and the 17s were on back order. Once they confirmed they wouldn’t fit which I didn’t want to deal with sending them back and what not I went with 18s which were in stock. I actually found a lighter tire than what I initially had purchased with the 17s so all in all I’m knocking about 12 pounds of weight off each wheel and tire set up going with the 18s instead of the 17s. Also no worries about fitment and I am also going with a +20 offset I don’t want any tread Poke sidewall is fine tread is not for me

Yeah the nokian outpost ATs I had my eyes on in 285/70/17 are a claimed sub 42lb tire... And they are relatively inexpensive vs just about every other tire I was concidering.

Guess I'm not sure about giving up on the 17s but i think I need to cancel the Cooper's... that look so damn sweet.

The other issue with 17s running so close to the caliper is debris — ice, snow, rocks, gravel, mud or whatnot can get caught in such a close fit.

I really like @SCSPerformance wheels, had Ray 10’s on my Tacoma. I swung by SCS Customs (their HQ is in my town) and @scs_vuth pulled out some wheels and got to look at some pretty Indigos and blues. They are working on 3rd gen off sets

Those Ray’s 10’s are nice…looked at them hard but the offsets are just way too aggressive for Tundra (for me anyway)

Glad to see/hear they are working on some Tundra specific offsets.

Everyone who has been upgrading to new, bigger tires, what have you been doing with the stock tires? Have they been easy to sell or are you just sitting on them?

I'd like to upgrade, but can't justify throwing away brand new tires.

I kept mine. Not entirely sure if I want to sell them or slap a spare set of TPMS sensors in them to keep as a "gas mileage" set of tires. I'm sure I'll end up trying to sell them when my wife get sick of them taking up space in the garage. haha.

I'm digging the choice to go black for the grill trim. Most folks are matching the body color, but I'm liking the choice to go black. Kudos.

Is this yours or at a dealership? I'm getting "dealership service bay" vibes from the background vs. an aftermarket shop. Plus your profile still shows your 2015. Just curious. I'm in/near Vegas too and would love to hit some trails with other 3rd Gens. Would make some sick content to see a bunch of 3rd Gens hit the trail all at once.

Not this year, but hoping for next year. Just started a new job and I won't start accruing PTO until May 1st. Pretty bummed because (totally selfish) I would have loved to one of the small group of 3rd Gens there. Next there, I know there will be a ton.

I brought mine over (295’s) from my 2015…and when I did the upgrade on that truck I sold the stock tires and TRD OR wheels together.

it all depends with used tires…can be hard to get rid off in some places but I did find 1 or 2 around here (greater Seattle area) who would purchase them after inspection and at their prices (kinda like a pawn shop).

Cooper is 100% American made. For truck tires I usually would say origins of American, Japanese, Thailand, and then lower priced Korea are fairly safe bets and common. Bought a ton of tires of the years and avoid china origin on stuff like that.

Sell those things on FB marketplace, I always had good luck with that. I dont see the point of putting miles and wearing out something you don’t like that you can sell. Or keep them so you can put them back on when you sell it.
