The cutoff date for the recall was 2/13/23. My truck was built on 2/14/23.

No wondering involved. If you do not have notification in the app or put your VIN in the NHTSA webpage https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and does not show up, your engine was assembled after the process change. The safety recall is based on engine serial number associated to your VIN.

I don’t want to kick a hornets nest but this makes me pretty curious why people are still ~afraid of the 2024s. Do they not believe the ‘improved procedures’ would have fixed the problem?

I was wrong my truck was ordered in Feb 23 but built in early March 23 so it is not in the recall and should have the improved engine processing.

My truck is exceeding my initial expectations thus far, to be honest. Once fully dialed in, I expect a long and trouble free service life from it, just like all my previous Toyotas, the present overblown hoopla notwithstanding.

From the same underlying issue, though? Or different problems entirely?

You're carping about a 20 year old truck that you bought used that has been to the moon and back on a current gen forum?
    What am I missing?

I'm not going to go a search every thread again nor can I say with 100% positivity the failures are exactly the same.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...XpeUogyH5shM/edit?gid=780956012#gid=780956012

Obviously that spreadsheet is a small sample of all failures. Also, a lot of information from other now deleted threads has vaporized when a member was ejected from these forums a while back

I've asked for sources of confirmed '24 bearing failures a few times. Crickets.

So what does a owner do that has a perfectly good running truck and there is a engine recall? If Toyota does a short block would you go in and have it done?

This “cleaning” process will hopefully help the #1 and 4 bearings? Those other two bearings are not failing.

From what people have posted. If you have a safety recall this is tagged on your vehicle. Meaning anyone who looks up your vehicle probably including insurance will still see this pending safety recall. Also selling your vehicle will show if the safety recall was rectified.

Mine has been doing this from the beginning, right off the lot. Over a year and still waiting on the dealer to get all the parts to replace it.

If my 2024 truck has such a major repair, I would get it fixed by Toyota and then trade it in. Until and if that happens, I intend to use it as I would have anyway.

Same boat, but non-hybrid. Same year, mileage, fixes done, and 2/23 build date after 2/13/23 since not in recall. I try not to worry and just enjoy the truck (minus creaks, wind noise and other minor annoyances on an upper trim truck that are “common for the model” or “could not duplicate” by techs on multiple visits)…hasn’t let me down, yet, and if it does I’ll deal with the pearl clutching, then.

Read this thread, a guy claims his 24 had a short block replaced. The last comment from another poster claims his son's 24 has a blown engine from debris.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ToyotaTundra/comments/1cz18k6/2024_engine_failure_update/

One user here claimed a failure of a 24. Too bad the other threads got deleted:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...JKCX5E50vAXpeUogyH5shM/htmlview#gid=780956012

Attached screenshot from May on the Tundra Reddit of a 24 with a shortblock replacement.

I've seen a few other posts on 24 failures, but the above are ones I had saved.

As I have said previously, it appears the # of failures has reduced as 24s have had fewer failures as 22s at the same age and mileage. It is a bit harder to deceipher the 23s as many users reporting failures did not report a failure date (see linked spread sheet linked here or the stickied engine failure thread), so it is unclear how many post recall 23s have failed.

As I also said before, all car manufacturers have a very small # of engine failures in new models. And they always have. These could be from bad parts, or even with the revised block cleaning process it is possible thay debris could remain in a very small percentage.

That is why dumping a post-recall Tundra at a big loss right now seems like a poor choice until more info comes out.

    Edit:
Here is a 2024 Sequoia posted here today with an engine failure:

Thanks. I don't do Reddit, FB, or any other social media except this forum and a hunting forum, so I wasn't familiar with those '24 cases.

What's frustrating to me is people rarely post the actual diagnosed reasons for their engine failures. The Reddit case you posted is an example. We really don't know if that was a bearing failure or some other problem. Same goes for your Sequoia link. Your second link gives me a 404 error.

I just did the 4th oil change on my Gen 3 at 15K miles, today. I drained the oil into clear plastic jugs so I could inspect it closely. I didn't see a single spec of metal or anything glittery. I also cut the old oil filter open. Nothing abnormal in it, either. So, I'm confident my engine isn't shredding a bearing, and I won't hesitate to take off on my remote fly fishing trip in a few days.

Again, none of those are confirmed bearing failures. Engines fail for all kinds of reasons. It seems some people here assume every reported engine failure is the bearing problem.

Yes. The spreadsheet has a few hybrid entries. It's up to you to decide what "engine blew up" mean. Since we have not seen images of vented blocks which was the old school definition of "blown up" it appears most have simply seized.

In true internet form, seldom see a post detailing the actual root cause. Only toyota knows.

The Hybrid is running the exact same motor so it's not out of the potential bearing failure problem. The reason for not seeing as many is because there are less of them on the road.

Yep, but most people reporting failures have not reported build date, so unclear if these are pre cleaning procedures or post.

There has still been a number of reported failures of 2024s (of the exact same nature, spun main bearing #1) on this forum and on some other sites (Facebook, Reddit, etc). Therefore people have speculated that the improved cleaning processes didn't indeed solve the issue.

Then you get into whether or not they (meaning Toyota) truly believes that they solved the issue or that they plan to extend the recall to 2024s later, and simply wanted to avoid having to issue a stop sale on all 2024 non-hybrids that were still on the lot when they issued the recall

It maybe the same motor but it isn't the same block. The hybrid block is coded different. Not sure what the differences in the engine are a bolt hole here another coolant or oil passage there. Some of teh attachment points could be different the blocks are not teh same. The non hybrid ends is A and the hybrid an H
