That is good news and bad news. Good news is the great trip stats and MPG. Bad news is that we may have to break in another new engine.

I'm in the low probability, don't worry about it camp. It is kind of fun watching non-owners get lathered up.

I was thinking that when I read your report but didn't want to say anything. Oof. Mine should be coming in a week or 2 and I may be in the same sinking ship. But I am not sure how BlackStone provides their reports these days, paper or electronically.

Edit: Never mind, I just found my last Blackstone report for my 2009 Tacoma taken in 2018 with about 60,000 miles. It came via e-mail. No silver in that one. Zero. Everything else in that report was perfect. Gotta love those 1GR-FEs.

Lmao. Yes I’m jealous you get 2 engines. Are you going to sell the spare one? Oh that’s right, you don’t get 2 engines.

Honestly, I understand the way folks feel who have these motors. I’d feel the same way. There’s no point worrying about it, it’ll be what it’ll be and Toyota is likely to take care of their customers as they have in the past

I will say that I don’t understand buying a new vehicle with this power train until Toyota has the issue fully sorted out and there is some written resolution from Toyota re: how they’re going to make customers whole should they experience a failure. Will Toyota buy the trucks back at full market value plus some extra money for the headache? Will Toyota repair and then resell these models at big discounts and take the reduced value hit themselves as VW did after the emissions scandal? Will Toyota drop in crate motors? Will Toyota use short blocks and let dealer techs eyeball parts and replace only what they have to? Will Toyota extend the warranty (and for how long) to early adopters who might experience a failure? Personally, I’ll be in the market for a new truck next year and won’t look at another Tundra until the issues are resolved… and I’ve loved my previous Tundras.

Almost as fun as watching owners panic-sell trucks that are working perfectly fine for a significant loss.

This is what I do as well. Unless it's a highlight video on an NFL prospect, I watch and listen to everything at 2x. It took some time building up to that, but it is my sweet spot now. Completed my grad program 40% faster thanks to this skill set. Lol

That's the million dollar question. Does Toyota decide to do a full replacement long block sourced from the assembly line or do they go with a short block. I've been a tech for a long time and just finished my career with Toyota and a Pro tech. A long block assembly is not something that can be sourced from Toyota parts so they would have to pull from the assembly line. I wouldn't worry about a complete motor install. It's type of job that any Toyota tech can handle. A short block though is something that is very labor intensive and techs can be short changed on the labor. There are so many things that could be missed and because it doesn't pay well and techs are always under a time pressure so mistake are inevitable. Toyota needs to do the right thing. If they do provide a replacement long block I'll be ready to buy. If they go short block, I'm staying with my 2016.

After 47 days in the shop, I'm picking up mine tomorrow. It was a short block rebuild amd by yesterday, a dealer tech. Ive initiative a buy back and I'll probably just get a tacoma for the time being.

I watched the vid. Really like him. Wasn’t really clear about he was saying regarding part number change and/or suppression. Having worked for a GM Division back in the day, a part number was changed if “form, fit, function” had been changed. Changing a part number was a big deal, and I had been involved in countless “revisions” to drawings. I never saw a PN change resulting from a production/process engineering change on the assy line. A change of a supplier might cause a revision to a PN/drawing if it was a source controlled vendor, but not a PN change. We were encouraged (design engineering Dept) to be mindful of adding new part numbers unnecessarily, as it costed about $5K back then to manage that number in the system.
If I understood him correctly, and that they changed the PNs for the short block, and crankshaft bearings #1 & #4, it is because there was a design change affecting form, fit, function, and I really question like he did, the “machining debris” theory of failure. Having said that, he is correct in that “solving” what is really going on, and determining the root cause can and will take time, and the “fix” even longer. Additionally, typically in failure modes analysis, it is often a combination of 2 or more attributes that result in the failure, and not a single attribute, so again the theory of only “machining debris” being attributed is unlikely.

LOL. WTF are you even doing in the Gen 3 forums? Sounds like Toyota needs to fire their engineering team and just get the answers from joonbug.

    “Crazy as a June bug”
Meaning: June bugs, also known as May beetles, are a type of large, clumsy-flying beetle that are active during the summer months. This simile suggests that the person is behaving in a strange or erratic way.

All I said was there’s no way I’d even think about buying one right now with all the uncertainty. Which just about everyone else in the world would agree to except a few of you current 3rd gen owners. You seriously don’t have to be so defensive, it really shows your insecurity.

This is curious. If I had a 3rd gen and had to take a loss, I would hang on to it. If I could sell it for my cost or close to it, I would absolutely do that. But no way I would go buy one.

Foreign citizens can import a non-conforming vehicle and keep it in the country for up to 12 months.
