After all the BS with online vendors I've been getting parts from my local Toyota and eating the cost. The boot kits are 90 each and i have to go to toyota of auburn 4 hrs away to get them. Nation wide back order. I got the half in drive cv band tool from Amazon tho.

I had to drive from Forks WA to the Auburn toyota and back for these. Apparently there is a nation wide shortage and they wouldn't ship them. 90$ each side.

I am just hoping to confirm that the "FR" on both packages doesn't stand for Front Right. Hoping both sides are identical. Just got home and saw it. Thanks!

That's crazy, rebuilt CV axle from the dealer is 80-90 bucks.

I just called wilder toyota in Port Angeles WA. They're telling me $1024.99 to install the axle boot kits plus 129$ for an alignment. WTF. I'm not gonna have time to do these this summer before the rain season in forks. Which means they're not gonna get done till next summer so I might as well stop driving it. Irritated asf rn. Might just sell it.

They call it the "stealership" for a reason. Never go to one, unless you want to lose money, get overcharged, and have your labor hours concatenated.

Find a local shop that deals with Toyota, specifically, or that does offroad stuff. Get a quote from them instead. Find two if you can, to get competing quotes. That work shouldn't exceed $600-750 in my opinion.

And btw, what exactly is going on that you need to replace the boots? Rips? Or just slinging grease?

Pretty sure they've slung so much grease They're empty now. I've lost at least half the volume in the bags they give me in one boot over the last few months. I don't think they started leaking when I lifted it. I think they've been leaking since before I bought it.

Did they say why an alignment was needed? Unless you requested that you don't need an alignment after replacing CV axles/boots.

That too ^^ classic example of a dealership adding in excess work that most wouldn't bother with.

I mean, you can get new clamps, buy the generic clamp tool on scAmazon, pop the clamps off, pull the boots back, re-grease, and install new clamps, tighter.

If you want to do the reboot work yourself, CarCarNut has a great video showing the process. Someone posted recently, it really gives you a breakdown of things. Adapt to your needs. He even shows/deals with the boot kit. This is the advice you need to hear. But I'd argue that I don't know you need to replace your boots if they're not torn.

Thanks guys. I got it covered. Better off road trucks and trail will install the boot kits, ecgs bushing, and do an alignment for $700 out the door. Have an appointment Wednesday the 30th. I'll have to take a ferry over the day before and sleep in the back of the truck but oh well. I appreciate it.

    Sounds like a fair shake.

I take it you already know, outside of getting it done once every 1-2 years, you should really get an alignment any time you update your suspension. Especially after lift or lower, and even when doing trivial shit like replacing struts, tie rod ends (even if you carefully mark positions) etc.

Grease sling after lifting isn't unusual, at all, from what I've seen from others on here. Some guys just adjust/re-clamp their boots when they see it.

Thanks. Yeah I've needed one since the lift. I'm just in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure slowing down and just reclamping and greasing myself would save money. I've just got alot going on at home. My lease is up and I'm not resigning cause my building has a class action against the owners due to breaking federal housing authority laws. So I'm in the middle of finding a place and getting things in storage. Been in a bit of crisis lately and it's affecting clear focus on smaller tasks like this. Thanks again

Prob mentioned sbove. Cut those oem clampd off. Get the ones you tighten with bolt. Link is on hear somewhere. I replaced and repacked. No greese slinging and i do 85mph on way into work almost daily. Oem clamps get week and using that tool sucks.

I got the new boot and grease kit installed today. I left the shop and within 5 miles noticed my driver side making a metal on metal whooshing noise. I pullover, look under truck and the driver side boot exploded a ton of grease. The clamp and boot look completely fine. Did they not install the axle correctly or something? I've never heard that whooshing noise. The guy said he heard it but thought it was my heat shield of my exhaust. That only rattles with the brake on in reverse. The close at 5pm and it's on the lift now at 520pm. If they can't fix it now I have to sleep in the truck at the shop and get it done tomorrow hopefully. I'm 5 hrs from home, took the ferry over last night and slept in the truck, dropped it off at 8am and picked it up at 430pm. It was back at the shop by 450pm and it's been on the lift about 30 mins. I'm not sure what to do but I've got a ferry reservation to get home for tomorrow at 245pm and the rest are booked for the week. Irritated as hell

I brought all parts and paid only labor

    Was $1184

To install the oem boot/ kits

Installation of East Coast Gear Supply bushing

    Lower ball joints and alignment.

Got it sorted. The owner had the clamps and reclamped it. He said the only thing he can think of was built up air pressure and it pushing a bunch of grease out all at once. Heading to the ferry terminal where I'm sleeping tonight so I'll check it out when I get there. It's about 20 miles. The metal on metal noise was they bent the backing plate into the rotor. So if I hadn't heard the backing plate I would have never looked under the truck. Also to note they hammered my passanger outer tie rod accidently and replaced it with whatever they had. Probably the last thing I'll ever have done at a shop that I can do on my own. I've just received two written violations from my land lord to my property manager. First for doing my brakes for like 2 hrs and the second for changing my oil at my apartment. So until I move truck and car jobs have to be done at the park down the road.

I just made it to the ferry terminal and this is my driver side after 20 miles. They told me everything is fine when I left a bit ago. I guess I gotta drive this thing back up there at 745 in the morning before they open and demand they figure it out.

I lost more than twice the pictured amount of grease the first time I left the shop. So at this point I need them to repack the boot with whatever cv grease they have and get this thing sealed. Unless the amount lost is insignificant and a reclamp is warranted. I don't care if they have to use the old boot. Just need it fixed.

It means they only did a toe set for the alignment. They didn't do caster and camber.

See what I mean. All shops no matter how reputable seem to be shit these days. I don't know anything about alignment numbers so I posted it here. I'll mention it to them tomorrow. Thank you.

    Ask them to do:
    -0.3 camber
2.6-2.8 caster (anything 2+ would be acceptable depending on amount of lift).
    .05-.08 toe in per side

I got it back at the shop. They're just gonna clean it up and release it as is most likely. I'm going to call my bank and dispute the whole $1184 when I get it back.

What a fiasco! If you get your money back, I'd get OEM remanned cv axles and have them installed. I think Titus Will Toyota in Tacoma uses the online program so you can order online and then pick it up. Michael's Toyota in Bellevue price matched the Toyota online prices if you ask them.

Also it's a bit of a drive for you, but when I lived in WA, I used these guys and they know Toyota's really well. Scott did a few rear wheel bearings for me which are really tricky and he got it right.

Thanks. When I brought up the caster and camber they just refunded me 108 for the alignment instead of saying anything at all. They said they "found an OEM Toyota cv clamp around the shop and put it on, (lies) its still shitting all its grease out. I'm on the ferry now. My credit union WSECU is usually pretty good. We'll see. The truck is going to sit at my apartment till I get the dispute refund or buy a single Toyota axle and swap it. I'm in the middle of saving for moving so it's gonna be a month or two. Crazy becasue I brought them a working truck and don't want to drive it at all till this is taken care of now. I'll just keep using the daily driver I guess.

FIXED THE WOBBLE FINALLY!! Gd I am so relieved to be done. I had discount tire balance these tires and tell me they're in balance. Then I take it to this little ghetto tire shop in town and they tell me they're completely out of balance! So discount tire has had me throwing parts at this thing for no reason. Full Suspension, coil packs, cv axles, driver needle bearing bushing, balance, alignment, carrier bearing, every damn thing but the torque converter. Never thought I'd need a second opinion on tire balance but here we are. Truck is finally a keeper.
