Bow killed a couple huge Alberta bears last week. Biggest weighed 400, squared 7’2” and green scored 20 10/16”. D25DB4EB-D2E1-4A4F-8E18-D8673C183986.jpg

Congrats! I've heard that Canada bear hunting is going to be primo for the next several years due to the borders being closed from COVID. Seems like thats true! Did you see quite a few bears, how did other hunters in the area do?

It was always good but yes I would agree with your assessment - should be even better. Yes I saw quite a few bears, 6 hunters in camp - 4 guys shot P&Y bears but everybody was targeting BIG bears, there were quite a few daily sighting of smaller bears. I hunted with him last year (first year you could get in post covid). I did not even draw my bow back, however saw 4-6 bears each day just not what i was looking for.

Last year I got my deer in 20 mins on the first day. Had enough free time to drive it home, butcher, make sausage, freeze cuts, and be back out there for grouse and bun in two days time. I love small game hunting, perfect way to spend a day in the mts.

For the past three years I've had amazing deer luck. I still-hunt blacktails in the Cascades and it's tedious work, they really are ghosts. About two years ago I really hit my stride on being able to sneak up on them, read the wind, and track. However, in 2020 a large buck was harassing a doe in the pasture of my rental as I was going down the driveway, and I couldn't pass up on him. 2021 I got loaded up for ten days in the mts and right as I pulled up to my favorite hidden camp, there was the fattest forky you've ever seen standing right over the fire ring. Last year I got geared up for a couple of weeks in the mt and got a lil guy shortly after starting my stalk. So, lots of luck involved.

That forky was such a hog. It just kept getting bigger the closer I got until I was standing over a meat pile. He was very easily larger than the buck in the first picture, definitely heavier. It was very misty out and I let him lay till after dusk before approaching him. He had the curtesy to run back into the quarry and expire where I could drive up to him, so that I did. As I was gutting him I looked up and noticed a set of large forward facing eyes watching me from the tree line about a hundred yards out. Great. So instead of skinning and quartering him, I had to figure out how to lift that toad into the battle wagon. First I tried setting in one end at a time, but the only returns I got were acme style slapsitck of the end I wasn't lifting falling out. Next I opened the front driver window, ran some paracord through to a tree, and threaded the line through the window and out the back where I tied it to his legs. I tried backing him into the car that way, also a no go. Mind you this whole time I have all the lights on and am blaring Judas Priest Painkiller in order to keep the bear or cat at bay...not to much effect. Third try was me getting desperate. I panicked, grabbed the freshly gutted deer in a bear hug, and suplexed him backwards into the open hatch of the old subaru. Of course the second I was lying in there with him we both started sliding back out. I had to put both feet on the inside of the hatchback and leg press us both all the way in. All I could do was lie there panting with a deer tongue half stuck to my face. I drove about ten miles away from that spot for good measure and took a lil nap in the car with the guy, then drove home. Honestly I'm setting a bad precedent here, my fiancee now expects backstraps and tenderloins by sundown on the day I go out.

Bullfrogs taught me a lot about stalking as a kid, mostly about patience and investing time in a good approach. I get the same thrill stalking deer, and I hope your kiddo gets to transition those skills soon! (If he hasn't already)

Turkey are super smart here in Ohio. But a lot of fun to hunt for sure. It has been a real learning experience for him. Now his sister has had awesome luck and has even shot her first 3 with a crossbow. You may want to get the pointers from her. Lol
